Come on boys, how did it go...?

Wow, it sounds really lovely on piano. Just gorgeous smile I love the original to but his has so much heart in it. It evokes something different.

The thing for us is, Celsius and myself can't go out and play with other people, we're promoting a show featuring other people rather that ourselves, which means we can't piggyback off existing shows. We're not trying to promote artists, you know?

Another suggestion that I just thought of  and I can make is you don't necessarily need to promote it as a "chip" show. If you're promoting a night where your headliner does say D&B (that happens to be chip) advertise it within D&B communities as well. Just because the "instruments" used are different, doesn't make it any less D&B and it can open you up to a whole new world of potential fans

I think the answer is getting me to play, right SoundBytes Crew?

I think a PR/Street team of sorts would be a wonderful addition to SB parties!

What about getting some food in the place! Mex Fest gig?

Tom, did you get drunk and have Mexican food?

Gonna get us some sega candy-trance!

Hey dosPrompt, I don't have anything at all to add, I just wanted to say that I always marvel at the level of effort and commitment that you go to when organising shows, and in my honest opinion it pays off quite well. Thanks so much for doing what you do! big_smile

Aw thanks Seb! I don't see any point having you guys cme to town to play little shows. We're trying some new avenues this time around (eg there is a HUGE (700 person) LAN that weekend which we're going to poster at so hopefully we can get some new regulars

I just bought 120 Lei's (Appropriate, Summery) So we can tell people to Come to Soundbytes and get Lei'd smile

I think it depends on your definition of PR and what that means. Does it mean someone who helps do your advertising or someone who is (say) part of a group with similar values (maybe someone who runs LANs and has a lot of contact with gamers) mentioning your event to their group.
Forcing it is one thing, but happening to be able to take advantage of access to other like-minded individuals is another

We're doing a big push on publicity this year, we've applied for a grant to help put some extra funding in our promotion too.

Oh actually I have another useful one. Don't discount the importance of local artists who tend to bring their mates (and existing fans) keep that in mind when working out your bill.

I too love the idea of "promoters" who are bringing mates. I would like to think that our gigs have a nice atmosphere even if you're not there for the music, there's video games to play and a fun crowd, so we're easy to drag people to.

These ideas are great (and hopefully help people other than us) keep em coming guys smile

So,
I’m interested, what do you guys do to advertise your gigs?

As many of you know, Celsius and myself run Soundbytes here in Melbourne. It’s only every quarter or so (enough that people don’t get bored of us) and we have previously advertised on all the online gig guides, facebook, radio (as part of interviews) and will have our first street press ad next week if all goes to plan. Oh and kickstarter as well and we’ve learned to only play venues with reasonable drink prices!
Posters and flyers haven’t really worked for us...
We're always looking to get more peeps to our shows, and I’m interested in what you do to drive people to your shows. Anyone have any brilliant and original ideas for getting extra folks along?

YES! Go Candy-Segatrance!! I had forgotten. When you come down and play a show for us, I am writing you up in all the online advertising as playing "Candy-Segatrance" if that doesn't pull the punters, nothing will smile

Not on a special list. I'm saying ther could be a link, or a list, that shows songs that have a certain score.

The score would be based on information, such as (for the sake of argument ill call "likes" thumbs)

Personally I like the idea of points for whatever reason (is it because someone listened to it, or commented on it or whatever).

A chart based on likes doesn't necessarily get you the best song, it gets you the song by the person who is able to convince the most of their mates to press "like" on it (not to mention the competitiveness where it's a matter of two people being close in score and one of them may potentially spam their song to get the edge (or someone might spam it on their behalf!)

I think rather than a top 5 in order of points, being in a list of all the songs that have hit this X value "score" over the past Y time period would be nice. Invisible score based on how many people liked your track enough to listen/comment/"like" it especially if its based on total liked/total listened = score (or whatever. )
All you know is you're awesome enough to be on the "special list"; not who is the most awesome or who beats who. Just enough to get you a warm fuzzy people because people love you.

I'm rambling. Time to go home. smile

Wish we could come up to go! Celsius considered coming up for the night til he realised it was a Thursday sad

Or... you could be like me and my girl and organise and promote chip music parties. big_smile

I like my situation better. tongue

I still find it hard to explain to people what it is though (considering that I'm somewhat more removed from the scene and cannot answer technical questions like the one where people ask "So... it's like a videogame?").

I had the conversation this morning (pretty much word for word)

"It's WHAT kind of music at this gig?"
"er... Chipmusic."
"What is THAT?"
"mmm...It's music made using the soundchips from consoles to act as instruments, you know, like Gameboys and Amigas"
"Oh. <Long pause while they processes this information> So, can you dance to it?"
"Yeah.... some of it. It's different genres... It could be like, house, or dubstep or something different"
"And it's called what??"
"Chipmusic... like a soundchip"

I think I confused him, because he mumbled something about taking over the world and walked away with his 8 litres of milk.

With heavy rain... Mmm its interesting, looking at some of the gameplay reviews (kotaku had a "first hour of heavy rain" review) , it looks like it could get quite tedious as well, there seems to be a lot of just going around your every day stuff, like brushing your teeth and stuff. The concept sounds kind of cool, interesting storyline, but I dunno, it depends whether the mundane stuff actually adds to the atmosphere or just bores you to tears.
