Hahahahahahahaha!
It's not about being a "computer guy", but knowing the tools you use the best possible. Think of it that way
I have had to use a variety of old computer shit across too many parts of the globe to have enough advice for my lolstralian friend! Many times it's harder than it seems.

Re: First Try at Visuals (12 replies, posted in Motion Graphics)
would you say it's good for VJ-ing?
If you keep it fresh, it is, if you keep the same thing audioreacting to a tune all the time, no.
It's usually misused but it can have potential. I once built a little arkaos-like video switcher with it (way back then when Quartz was a standalone program called pixelshox and the ONLY hardware-accelerated VJ software in existance) and it worked swell.
My friend r3nder makes incredible visuals using Quartz: http://r3nder.net/resource/archives/cat_crafts.html

I asked because I never bought vj software before. I do want to make it fair, and not be an ass offering too little.
As he said, whatever you want is fair.
VJ software costs around 400/600 euros, you wanna pay that? I think it's not the idea

Good news is today I got my 120v PSU for the Amiga, I've got my laptop working as a PAL TV with a USB thing so I don't have to source a television
You can use an NTSC one with an A1200, switch to NTSC and you will have NTSC-M. It's black and white but good enough.
Any TV will work at 60Hz vsync 15Khz hscan rate, even LCD TVs. But the capture method works as long as you don't need instantaneous response (it has a logical delay).
Oh, you gotta be careful, if your tracker syncs to VBL instead of CIA, tunes will be faster.
I need to find a new way to display my Amiga since I used the PSOne screen for something else. I need a new LCD display for gigs.

Re: software recommendation: PS24VJ (16 replies, posted in Motion Graphics)
I played with Pikilipita once, he really wants to be more involved in VJing at events, he seemed bewildered as to why he didn't get any offers considering there are very few UK based VJs.
There's not few UK based VJs, maybe there are few UK based, cheaptoon-prone VJs. But UK is the single place on earth with the biggest load of VJs in the world!
I talked with him before and he seems always to be in lack of gigs, yeah. I think he has a very particular style that is not suited just for anything, and making cheaptoon gigs probably won't pay off his work
At any rate, he should be invited to Blip Festival.
How to get the PS24VJ software:
tell me how much you would donate and you'll get a copy of PS24VJ if your offer is welcomed.
I think he pretty much says it all, offer whatever you want. Make it fair. Don't poll it with Jean, just follow your heart.
