If I had extra cash I would be down. Sorry, I'm already too stressed out this month about just paying rent and buying groceries. Such is life.

Not a problem. The beta won't start for another week or two at the very earliest. This is just to get some names.

Uh uh uh... I WANT ONE. Also, I have no money. Heh. If this drives the cost of the Wiz down I'll get a Wiz. BTW, that thing looks AWESOME.

Okie dokie, it's about time for me to round up a few good members who will be doing beta testing for the Munchausen project! You'll have to pay for your cartridge and cable, but you'll be the first to get one, you'll be giving valuable feedback to the project, and you'll be publicly credited upon release in the documentation.

There will be only 5 to 10 beta cartridges made. They will have professional labels etc. and will not look like the Frankenstein-monster prototypes that Blargg and I have been working on. The cost will be $50 plus shipping to your part of the world. If you send in a donor cartridge of the correct type you will be given a $10 discount. Also note at this time that I'll only be able to provide NTSC donors, so if you need a PAL region cartridge you should either not participate in the beta program or be willing to send a PAL donor cartridge or region mod your NES. (which is very very simple to do)

If you'd like to be in the beta program, please post here with your NES experience, your proficiency with programming (if any) and any other reasons you think you'd be a good beta program candidate. A number of users will be selected and notified by PM when the beta is ready to begin.

Also, if you have no idea what this Munchausen cartridge is, please refer to this massive thread:
http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/2004/ … all-demos/

EDIT: Someone asked for donor cartridge lists, so here are some for your consideration:

Most-likely eligible NES games

Most-likely eligible PAL games

Make sure the software isn't write protected and has been given permissions to access your hard disk etc.

I have been approached by a number of artists who have asked if they can contribute in some way to the Munchausen cartridge project. While I have commissioned a member of the community, Pixls, to do artwork for the cartridge labels, there is still the possibility of having alternate or "easter egg" artwork in the bootloader, and of course it's just plain fun to see people's arts!

So, please post in this thread your pictures of the renowned Baron von Munchausen, doing his incredible feats. Especially if you make a picture of him "bootstrapping" himself out of a swamp, as in legend!

Well, I was thinking of perhaps doing an art thread of sorts, and then at the end various pieces may be chosen for inclusion. Gimme a sec to think of how I want to do it, and then I'll post something in the art thread.

Short update, just to say that the PC-side software is coming along decently. Uploading ROMs to the cartridge is pretty smooth and painless. Me and Blargg got in a good deal of testing on our respective NES-es last night, with hardly any errors. I'll try to make a video of the process at some point, perhaps when a few more of the features have been implemented.

Also, I'd like to offer a great big public "THANK YOU!" to the amazing Lazerbeat, who has generously offered to hunt down and ship to me, free of charge, some Famicom gear so I can make a version of the Munchausen cart for the Famicom. Also a big thanks to Pixls, who has offered to do artwork for the project.

Doesn't lightwall already support multiple shapes?

Um, yes it's odd, but possibly something quite cool. I like it!

EDIT: watching the video and seeing the two-color bottom of the screen, I think it looks a bit like the front of a NES. Put some bottom corners on it, so it'll really look like a NES. big_smile

awesome, now make one for snes smile

Huh? The NES one isn't even done yet. And, this approach won't work exactly the same for SNES anyway, because the processor doesn't keep timing properly. The whole reason this approach works at this projected price is because the NES is basically doing all the work of being a UART and controlling reads and writes etc. I think I can safely speak for myself and for Blargg, don't expect a SNES version. Sorry. smile

3. mr snugg, look at it that way: what's better, a pack of kleenex or a slice of bread? depends on whether you're hungry or your nose is dripping, doesn't it?

Yeah, right on brother!

Hang on, which one is NTRQ?

Yours is a triple-decker deep dish pizza with everything on it.
BTW, did blargg PM you yet Neil?

Well, the problem is that the retrousb repropak boards auto-config, making doing this potentially a huge mess. Sorry man! If I was I'd be happy to go in on solid color cases though, but custom PCBs won't be coming till a ways down the road, if they happen at all. We'll just have to see how successful the project will be.

EDIT: I should also add, hand-building these is not an issue for me since I'm not anticipating a humongous overwhelming demand. If I happen to get humongous overwhelming demand I'll consider doing PCBs then and I'll be sure to let you know ASAP.

OH YEAH, one last thing. The repropak boards cost a good deal to get fully populated. Two RAM chips, one of them 32kb, and a Flash chip, CIClone, cart casings, any necessary mods, and a USB to NES cable. I'd quickly go over my price target. smile I can get everything I need minus the flash chips and USB cable stuff in one place (donor cart) for much less money.
