I am also in the "can't solder for shit" camp and I built a midibox sammich SID in 2 weekends. It was pretty much the first electronics project I ever did and it was a bad ass amount of fun. The build instructions for the midi box SIDS are very thorough. If you can't commission a builder, give it a whirl, you might surprise yourself. It's very very rewarding too. I'm going to builds shruthi1 and a midi box fm. Over the next few months.

Re: any tips for hosting a chip night? (17 replies, posted in General Discussion)
Very Slightly different topic but there may be a lot of useful info in here
http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/2126/ your-area/
I would also add being super professional and on the ball with regards to communication, get back to people asap. Try and raise some cash to pay partial travel costs for people who are like localISH you like the NY city crew and the Boston crowd or get adventurous and fly in AGM or UDA or IAYD or someone.
From the artists perspective if you can send them a proposal like
"Hey there, I will be able to pay $150 towards your travel costs and can put you up on a sofa for 2 nights. We have a crowd of 150 people and will be live streaming"
Or something like that people will go up to play I expect.
I would work really hard on promoting it like a mother fucker. Poster it, flyer it, hit the colleges, the local radio stations, cafes, libraries, galleries and where else people who might be interested hang out. Offer free entry to anyone who can sell 5 tickets. Basically get as many people in your venue as possible. I would pay a fair amount of heed to Bleo, he seems to know the scene there.
Lastly, try and rent/borrow/steal/blag a decent sound system and get someone who knows how to run it make it sound awesome for chip.
Best of Luck!!!

I appreciate this is a hell of a necrobump but the patch editor is now at v 2.11 and I have FINALLY had some luck with making the little beast work with my hardware. Also numeric displays for all values.
Sorry, forgot to add, there is now a comprehensive user manual!

Well CM.org seems to have a slightly older and perhaps slightly more affluent user base. I think if the idea is good it might well work. I am fairly sure there have been bounties for certain features to be added to piggy tracker.
Also there of very creative people who have donation buttons on their websites:

Topic: Casio VZ series and iPD (0 replies, posted in Other Hardware)
I am very vaguely toying with the idea of trading my CZ1 for a VZ-10m for space economy purposes. The CZ series uses Phase Distortion Synthesis which I really like, far from and expert but it makes a fair amount of sense to me. The VZ uses iPD which is apparently interactive phase distortion. I have done a bit of poking around and it look like iPD is fairly similar to PD but with more DCOs (8 vs 2) and a shed load more routing options. Has anyone got any experience with iPD vs PD? Any impressions or ideas or demo songs?

Not massively experienced at this but a few observations which might come in handy.
- Rent a phone/SIM, preferably with data. If you don't have one, getting in contact with people and more importantly, people getting in contact with you, is likely to be difficult.
- Print out maps of the venue and your hostel BEFORE you go, doing in an unfamiliar country will be difficult.
- Check your gear will work with whatever power they have in Danemark, buy converters BEFORE you go, it is likely to be difficult to find them at short notice.
- Get to your sound/visual checks on time, even if it means you have to arrive early. Avoid causing difficulty for the organizers.
- Check you have extra connectors/weird connectors. If you can connect your gear to practically anything you can imagine it will help you out of some difficult situations. a BNC to Composite connector may save a gig.
- Buddy up, if you can find a hostel or a hotel with other people, it's less difficult to get around.
- You will have a less difficult time at customs if you have the address of your hotel/hostel and itinerary printed out to show the officials.
- Also, and this is sad but true, if you are worried about having a difficult time at customs, shave, use deoderant, wear nice clothes, a suit if you can.
Probably a bunch more ideas somewhere.
