If I could get down, I totally would. Despite there being a fair few artists round Newcastle, there is no gigs anymore :c We were gonna organise something to link into a digital festival that Gateshead is putting on, but the venue turned us down (the only venue in Gateshead...) </3
Shit suxxxx.

I was in charge.
That sounds a good idea actually, I'll have an ask and see what I can do... I'm dealing with the distro however, so it may not be possible. I can certainly request that no more are pressed though, at the least.

It happened. We may as well try and make the best of it instead of freaking out.

This is just fucking stupid now. This is gonna be my last post in this thread.
I'm just gonna give you a comparison between the current situation, and what would have happened had we pressed it ourselves.
Ourselves:
Pay for pressing, mastering, labels etc
Try and get it into some small webstores, most likely try and shift them all ourselves.
Hopefully recoup money - most likely not.
Current situation:
Don't have to pay for production of the records
Backed by a distro and therefore in some major shops.
Get free copies of the record. No financial risk.
Regardless of the fact they pressed it without our permission (which is irrelevant as their eagerness to communicate with us and willingness to co-operate means we endorse the pressing) we currently have a better deal than we would have done anyway.
I'm pretty sure if you took anybody's free release, pressed it for free, got in major shops and gave them a profit from it (in our case, records (the remainder of the distro's stock)) they'd be fairly chuffed.
Anyway. I've said my piece (several times over). Go buy the comp if you like because we're happy with it being sold.
Haters gonna hate.

Re: WTB: All chip vinyl (105 replies, posted in Trading Post)
Yes, it is. We have been given the same payment we would have done had we ok'd this. The record is being sold far and wide. It hasn't cost us a penny, yet we are benefiting from it.
There is nothing more to be said about this.
On a different, more on topic note - Facundo, if you're wanting to shift at least one or two of those records, I'd certainly like to purchase one from your good self...

It's something that would never have been released like that anyway, it's rough and unmastered and just meant for a bit of fun.
Obviously if we were to do something more serious then obviously we would do it ourselves. Anything would be DIY aside from this bootleg. However, they are making 69c per record sold, giving us shitloads, and the distro has enough weight behind it to get this record into places like Rough Trade and Turntable Labs. I ask again - what would you have us do?
Because anything else, frankly, would be cutting off the nose to spite the face.
They are only making 69c per record? How is this so low when the record is priced at £13/$21 in Rough Trade? It's not like they were paying any of the artists.
It's $12 in the US stores, and comes from a US distro. Guess the price over here goes up with shipping and all that bollocks.
This is an email that Chuck, a guy at the distro with whom I've established a correspondence. This is his reply to me asking what the profits are for this.
We buy 'em for $6.00, and if we sell 'em direct to a store we get a
whopping $7.99 : )But many sales are sub-distributors or "big" accounts like Juno where
they get 15% off that....so that would mean we sell those for $6.79So yea, a whopping 69 cents each baby!
They typical upfront costs for a vinyl 12" is $250 to master, $200 for
plating, $150 for labels. Pressing the wax around $1, freight involved,
yada yadaSo yea, if you add this up the cat we got these from prob has not
recouped from our sales of around 120 copies (unless he has free
mastering or plating) ......and then we took 40 out to send to you guys
(rightfully).....We were told 300 were pressed, so yes we make some money for each copy
sold. But a recoup situation if probably closer to 200 copies sold.....Fun, a game of pennies....
Chuck
I suppose the shops take a lot of profit through record sales?

Just read the 8bc thread and here's the official Radiograffiti stance -
Don't be so fucking naive. Save money and D.I.Y.
And you would have us do what, exactly?
Bleed them dry for all their remaining copies? Oh wait, that's what they themselves suggested we do!
Stop the shops stocking them? Whooops, I forgot that getting the sort of exposure possible from being stocked in the single most important indie record store in the UK is bad!
We have been offered exactly what we would have received, had this been "officially endorsed". Pulling it from shops would be being a dick to the distros and shops, and take away any exposure for us.
Being a bootleg pressing, we can't find the person who pressed it (though the distro have taken on the responsibility for the repercussions), and similarly we can't stop this happening again. Then again, NOBODY can stop this happening to any release. The comp was small and thrown together for fun. It's not anybody's lifes work (if it was an album I had worked on for years then I would be considerably more angry). We have reached an agreement in the most mature manner possible, without any ridiculous knee-jerk reactions.
This situation is sorted.

Actually, you can get some pretty sweet iOS apps for chipmusic. I use YMCK Player myself for solos and shit, about to get Sinusoid which is a chiptune tracker. There's 8bitone as well.
Maybe a mention of this stuff could be worth it?
Maybe some "chip" keyboards too (VL-Tone for example)? Iunno, just throwing ideas out there.

I have an R4, and so I first used LSDJ on my DS, which was alright. Once I'd got a couple songs done on it, I knew that I wanted to properly use it and ordered an EMS 64m cart.
And over a year later I'm using the same cart and have never had any problem. I'd really highly recommend them.
Don't be put off by the complexity of LSDJ by the way. It's all just about getting used to it, it's actually really nice to use ^^

Hmm, I feel an awesome chip-scene hate campaign coming...
We got TV Death Squad's gigs cancelled, YouTube removed and MySpace shut down within 24 hours... Time for round 2? >:D
(I say we, but I literally did nothing. haha)
Also, I've never seen anyone else called TraceKaiser - I make music under my real name (Euan Lynn) anyway, which is fairly uncommon. So no troubles

Goddamn this is so inspirational. My track pales in comparison to pretty much everything else on this comp (I'm Euan Lynn btw. I don't think anyone actually knows that haha), but it's so awesome to be a part of this.
Can't believe the amount and standard of the songs so far. And the money raised! It's incredible
