Try removing the protective plastic.

You've ripped the ribbon cable.

I've actually covered this in a guide I'm working on. There's some other troubleshooting information there that may help you out for future modifications.

Why is everyone modding gameboys?

LED technology wasn't where it's at now in 1989. It's sensible to upgrade hardware.

There won't be a shortage of gameboys in our lifetime.

I have a DIY cart flasher that I can send you if you want to finish assembling it. The etching is okay, but it's missing all the little components like caps and resistors and the inductor. Free if you want it. The IC is programmed and a socket is already soldered to it.

I recently made kits that allow you to paint your own. They come with the adhesive. I recommend using model paints, but you basically have to paint in reverse.

It's difficult to have them printed in low orders. I've been looking into some designs and to actually have it look professional is pretty expensive, and not feasible in a low order.

I could send you a pre-backlit LCD. Feel free to PM me if you're interested.

Good job finally getting the EL kits together! I'll definitely be picking one of them up in the very near future.

Cool project. I still haven't found the time to make an arduinoboy, so I'd like to get my hands on one of these.

Looks good! See how small you can get the final version!  Internal anyone? wink

Internal? But it's a shield...

The battery light comes on so it's powering up alright, but everything else is just nonfunctioning. Not even the startup sound plays.

This seems to be a common misconception. This just means the LED is getting power. It's separate from everything else. If the backlight turns on however, that means it's getting power.

It seems like it could be that your ribbon cable isn't inserted properly, but is more likely that there is a bad connection in the cable.

I would guess that the polarized film came loose, but that's probably not the case because the sound isn't working either, and because I can see it's a VB kit.

This here isn't a case of vertical lines, it's a physical rip somewhere in the ribbon cable. The one under the LCD I'm sure. Check the solder connections on the cable under the LCD, and you'll probably see a broken connection.

It hasn't been pro-sound modded and I was using the built-in headphone jack. I don't really want to pro-sound mod this one, though. Maybe if I find my extra shells and order a few 6.35mm or 3.5mm jacks... but I do want to keep the sound un-modified (or not noticeably modified).

I have recently replaced most of the capacitors (only missing the hard-to-get-to ones on the front PCB), but I haven't tested this out on the skytrain yet. I don't think it made that much of a difference, though.

The reason I ask is not because I think a pro sound mod will improve it, but because there's some filtering that is bypassed with a pro sound mod that would help reduce interference.

Is it pro sound modded? Or are you listening through the headphone jack?

I knew the hotter the better but I didn't think bowling would work.

I wouldn't recommend it. I went bowling when I was dying a shell and it was completely warped by the time I came back.

...but really, the hotter the water, the better. You just have to find the right temperature. Boiling is definitely too hot, and shells can warp before the water boils.
