I'll download this later on today. The video looks amazing, the music is drool-inducing... winner.

not sure if it's just my PC but occasionally the program won't let me enter a note higher than, say, D#4. It'll recognise the note input, but no matter what note above it I enter, it just puts the D#4 note in.
after a bit of screwing around it "unsticks", but I'm just wondering what could cause this?

I like it... it has a little twist of Portishead meets Radiohead

Trying to make Sonic-esque music because that is what the Megadrive was for really
Ignore the first track, the second one is the important one.

Re: opinions about ZOOM RT-123 Drum Machine (6 replies, posted in Other Hardware)
wow you just reminded me that I have one of these... I got it years ago!
how are you planning to use the drum machine? I used to mess around with it, but in all honesty it wasn't that amazing and was a bit of a bugger to program the drums with. I don't think I'd really ever go back to a drum machine what with having software that can do the same and more.
if I were in your shoes, I'd sell the drum machine and use the money to buy an Akai LPD to use with drum sampling software like the drum rack in Ableton Live.
if you want to work with actual hardware it couldn't hurt to use the Zoom, but if I remember correctly it was kind of tacky and awkward for me.

my stuff, there's not a lot of it, but I would be interested in making music for a game like this.

I've never heard anyone rave about using Linux for audio production. I don't think I'd recommend moving over to it if you're already on Windows or Mac.

Re: Volume Levels? (19 replies, posted in Audio Production)
when mixing each song, I make sure the instruments are all balanced, then I make sure the maximum master volume output is no more than -1dB; finally I add a limiter like PSP Vintage Warmer or Classic Master Limiter and set it to a decent level to get a bit of bite on the overall mix.
when doing multiple tracks for an album I import all the final WAVs into Ableton and make sure everything sounds alright, then add a Master Limiter set to 0dB.
Usually sounds good to me

Props to the Ristar and Headdy videos already posted, probably my two favourite soundtracks on the megadrive.
Amazing use of instruments in this one, plus the way they adapt that really cool bassline to different sections of the song is fantastic.
My favourite SOR song. That 90's piano that kicks in is just brilliant.
Probably the best driving game tune ever.
FM pick bass can't be beaten.
the best.
and finally:
dat organ sound

no, if you don't have the button pressed that means it doesn't write an instrument number on the line when you add a note. whatever the last instrument you used on the line is the one that is applied to that note.
kind of what I meant apart from the previous instrument number bit this UK heatwave has affected by ability to articulate a point

Is it possible to have different sounding instruments for the 4 FM channels, and if so how? I can't get them to sound different no matter how many samples I load.

M-Audio AV40s... yeah I regret being cheap and not getting a pair of Fostex monitors. Saying that, they are quite good and I can mix quite well with them.
Saving up for some rokits though

Re: Writer's Block - Evasive Maneuvers? (20 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I tend to have a lot of unfinished tracks knocking around. When I can't write anything decent, I tend to go back to these old songs and try and finish them, restart them or pick out certain melodies or chord progressions. I also try to remix other songs for a source of inspiration.
The best thing you can really do is just step away from your music making gadget, go and listen to other music - stuff you love, stuff you usually wouldn't listen to etc. or just get out of the house/studio, go for a walk.
Oh oh before I forget: always carry a phone or something with a voice recorder so when you get a cool little melody in your head you can sing it into the recorder and you'll end up with a nice little collection of melodies to use when you're in a dry patch.
