Well if you want to be semantic about it the community is actually just "in relation to chip music, art, and its parallels"...the features being added are meant to inspire us or whatever. Not that it matters; I'm on the platform of "be mature and people will think better of us", not "we need people to think better of us so be mature", and this conversation isn't about whether cm.o is meant to promote chipmusic anyway. I only mentioned our community being represented in public as an example of how being less trollish and inane could benefit us. At the very least, it couldn't hurt.

The thing is, neither of us are really in a position to mandate what the site is or isn't -- we can only conduct ourselves in a way that we want others to follow. I mean, if the current state is where the site is headed, I can't really do much about it but try to be helpful and post where I can. Ultimately the site turns into whatever you want it to be through your interactions on it...I would just rather it be helpful; I can go to 4chan for trolling.
And as far as promoting chipmusic goes: as immature as it may be, I still respect *whatever* it is enough to try and speak well of it when I can. It's not a "job" to me, it's just what I should do...I don't need to wait for a netlabel or whatever to do it for me.

I mean it is my understanding that this is a forum by and for the people interested in chipmusic, not a perfect representation of the chipmusic community to The World. This is not a PR site, right?
I don't think cm.o should be a PR site, definitely, but that doesn't mean we can't try and be more mature. No one here has an obligation to educate anyone on chipmusic (or anything, for that matter) but I feel like we'll be a better community if we do. Obviously it's not that simple, but I don't think it's a terrible thing to want a central chipmusic site to help others understand what we're all about on our terms.
Again, I'm not trying to dictate that anyone does anything; it's more like an appeal. It's not an unreasonable trait to desire, and as the medium reaches more people there will only be more new listeners; we might as well be mature about it. And maybe cm.o isn't that site, or maybe we won't even have a site at all, maybe it'll be the artists that play big shows and festivals that put that representation out there, but I don't think it hurts to try, at least.

Man, I don't see why everyone is hating on these forums.
See, I'm not so much hating; it's more that I want us to do better. I think that's the best way to put my stance. I'm still telling people to come here -- I'm just doing it with more hesitation than I used to.

wait what? I definitely didn't make accounts to do that. you're probably confusing me with that spaceman fantastiques guy. I totally remember when that happened and I was really bummed that his name started with the same first word as mine did because I totally knew I was going to get confused with him
I didn't even start posting any of my stuff on 8bc until I had like 2 full-lengths out, and even then I only posted covers, if that's any indication of how seriously I took posting there

I'm firmly of the opinion that if you want off-topic discussion, go to an off-topic website. If you want to talk with your friends, the messaging system exists and IRC exists. I honestly don't see how having people posting dumb stuff in threads on what is supposed to be the premier site for chipmusic helps us at all.
I've seriously recommended this site to everyone that asks about chipmusic. I recommended this site when I was live on a stream with a ton of people watching and I wasn't even thinking about it -- I just knew that this place was the go-to place for information and discussion about chipmusic. Lately though I've been questioning whether there even IS a central place for that anymore because of the aforementioned trolling and thread derailments.
I think the end of Blip festival has pretty much given us a challenge to step it up and be more mature for the general public. We don't have a big serious festival to point others to so that we can justify our relevance -- it's really up to how we conduct ourselves as musicians now. When the supposedly "main" site for our medium is filled with random pictures and trolling, people take ALL of us less seriously as artists. Maybe it isn't even worth it to have a "main" forum for chipmusic -- there's no central dubstep forum or post-rock forum and they seem to get along just fine. But as far as repositories for information, there's really nothing better than here and I'd like it to stay that way.
As far as general discussion goes: it'd be fine if the general discussion sub-forum wasn't the most visited part of the site. But it's the first choice on the sub-forum list and it gets the most posts so I think it should be on topic.

here's something, though:
I don't really see why everyone is so quick to jump to a defense of this aesthetic. It's an AESTHETIC, meaning pretty damn subjective, and if some guy wants to think that TreyFrey is amateurish, so be it. It's not doing anyone any favors (ESPECIALLY the artist), and honestly, to me, quick defenses of a culture or aesthetic occur because the people defending it are trying to hide the fact that the aesthetic itself isn't all that compelling. By putting yourself in the way of a critic, you're diverting the critique and ultimately turning people off of the "community" (whatever that means now).
And really, when did it get to the point where it was not enough to simply enjoy someone's music? Now we have to be blind, staunch defenders to the death of the music we like because...well I'm not exactly sure why. Here's a tip for anyone getting riled up over this sort of thing: there are way more important things to worry about in your life than YOUR OWN music taste, much less some random guy's. This thread didn't ever need to leave the first page, and it getting to 12 pages is kind of the reason I don't post here that much anymore.

Re: trying to get a show together in august (SACRAMENTO AREA) (20 replies, posted in General Discussion)
yeah...to be honest, unless it was a festival or something like that, I wouldn't even want to stay around for a ten-artist show, just because that's really tiring as a listener. it's fine if you have the time and resources to organize that, but even a really well-run show is going to go for a really long time. the way I envision that kind of thing is 2 stages with staggered performance times so people can catch at least a little of every artist, as well as a bar and food to keep people there while listening. obviously that's not feasible at all, but I'm speaking as an attendee, and that is pretty much what it would take for me to stay there if I didn't know any of the performers personally. so yeah, I'd recommend scaling down as well.
BUT. you have the advantage of people being really hungry for this kind of show! a lot of us seem willing to play, at least
We must play a show while you're here. Or at least hang out. k? k.
definitely! let's try and plan one and stuff! unfortunately, I don't know very many venues up there so that's out of my control but I'd love to play up there because it's been SO LOOOOOONG
and hanging out is definitely a will do! I'll get in touch with you when I'm up there!

I'll be up in norcal from August 3rd-August 10th if it happens around then! definitely willing to play a set! but the Sac-town is pretty far away from where I'm staying so this needs to be like CONFIRMED CONFIRMED if I am to play

Re: Looking for a dj mixer (5 replies, posted in Other Hardware)
hey -- a little late, but I have an m6 and it's working just fine for me. the PROBLEM is that it has nothing but the absolute essentials (3-band EQ, pre-fader cue, etc.). it doesn't even have an FX send, so the mini-kp will have to be your master out (ew) unless you can finangle a way to get it not your master out.
HOWEVER. for 250, you can start shooting for the behringer djx750, which is the numark m6 PLUS an FX send and some other (probably shitty) effects to mess around with. I'm definitely looking at that one so I can stop making my kp3 the master out because everything sounds gross if that's the case

KP3 DELAY TENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
seriously the last two full lengths I've released are odes to that effect. it makes everything sound muddy as shit but it's a GOOD muddy as shit
(it really isn't though I need to work on EQing better )
also, delay 9 is fun for transitions between massively different bpms and so is delay 7 I think...there's an LFO that sounds AMAZING if it's synced right; you can check it out on my song Columbia on my latest release on my bandcamp if you want! everything else is way too WHOOSH-y for me.

hey -- I'm sorry for being such a dick. I didn't mean to discourage you from doing this compilation. classic case of not reading any of the posts and impulsively throwing my opinion out there.
I still don't think that this compilation is a great idea, but that doesn't mean you can't prove me wrong if the comp actually comes out.
