Hey guys,

It's been a long time since i've touched any chipmusic gear but im finally back at it and i was curious about the state of LGPT in 2019...

I'm managed to get my PSP 1001 running again and surprisingly still works well with LGPT but the lack of midi really makes it hard to try and use it live with any other gear (ideally with a couple of gameboys running LSDJ synced with MIDI)

So i was wondering what would be the best device to buy that would have an easy way to sync over MIDI with lsdj gameboys (DMG gameboys)

I was thinking of building my own raspberry Pi based LGPT device but a project like that would still get quite complicated and not very gig friendly with all the wires and stuff...

So im reviving this very old thread because ive been using nanoloop recently and loving it so much i want to start using it as my core component in my setup....

I have both an SP 100 and a DS Lite. i lvoe the sound on the DS lite. i got a chance to use it at a show the other day and it was kicking hard as balls.

there is however an issue that i ran into that for me is a complete dealbreaker for using the DS unfortunately.

when running on DS lite... the tempo of nanoloop is not accurate. ive done some tests @ 120bpm and after around 60 bars the tempo was behind by a 1/16th note. which is extremely drastic and unacceptable...

I know that you can't sync the DS to anything but i was at least hoping i could manually beatmatch with my other gear but if there's gonna be some drift like this it's gonna be pratically impossible to use with other gear.

so for anyone who's planning on using DS with other gear, don't. or at least do some tests about tempo drifts before you do.

I really like the DS sound and screen and buttons but ..... it's just not usable.

Does anyone else notice this? maybe it's just my DS? i used to think that because DS is more advanced (pun not intended) it would be even more acurate... but my SP was solid over 200 bars.

Here's a little Google searching:

The DS is not 60Hz either. According to GBATEK's excellent docs, the DS video runs at 59.8261 Hz, which is 0.15% faster than the GBA's 59.737 Hz.

I'm not sure if the DS actually changes it's video refresh rate to match the GBA's, it's not in the documents. However, the difference is so small the only way to find out is by capturing footage of both a DS and GBA running the same game in sync for several hours and see if they go out of sync.

It's possible, however unlikely, that Oliver could fix it in software. Similar to the way LSDJ was fixed for super game boy.

thanks, i had tried to search online by my search was more aimed at tempo, i didnt think about searching for refresh rate.
i really like running nanoloop on the DS both for sound, screen quality and control placement but i think id rather have it synced.

i did some very basic tests comparing the sound from GBA-SP and DS and while the DS was def fuller the difference wasn't really major i dunno if it would change exponentially based on the amounts of sound running at the same time or not. id have to do more testing.

Thanks for the info.... i do hope Oliver could patch this somehow though. that would be grand.

So after experimenting some this morning i noticed that running my nanoloop 2.7.9 on my DSLite trying to manually sync it with another device (since there's no midi sync for DS) it would not stay in tempo for long and i saw something was slacking back... so i decided to do some tests with ableton
here are the results:

CONST: 4 on the floor kicks as a controlled sample loop -  120 bpm - syncing of recorded wave on the first kick with the tempo (set 1.1.1 here)

DSLite Results:

after around 50 bars the tempo of my ds recording was easily a 1/16th note behind the ableton tempo. when adjusted to fit the tempo, resulting tempo of DS recording was 119.85 (adjusted over 65 bars)

GBA-SP:
after around 140 bars recording tempo was behind ableton tempo by just a fraction of a note... i couldn't tell you how much exactly but very very little, you have to zoom in really close to see the shift.
After tempo adjustment over around 160 bars tempo was still 120. so pretty much accurate as a gameboy can be.

Is there a reason for this? this kinda bummed me out, i just played a show yesterday with my DS and nanoloop for the first time and i loved the way it sounded on the PA.... was thinking of making that my new main instrument. but i wanted to sync it to a drum machine and if all i can do is manual sync and there's a considerable slip in tempo that's just not gonna work.

Love to hear what people think about this.

Did you also enable SYNC on the ableton midi out settings?

I did.... honestly the instructions are really generic and weak, but i managed to get everything working both on my macbook for nanoloop and mGB as well as my ipad.

Kinda weird it didnt work with windows but im okay with that.

so i managed. to get mGb working on my macbook but on my windows machine it didnt work. fair enough... now im trying to figure out if i can run it on my iPad.. trying to send midi to my mGB cart through ipad. the ipad detects the nanolioop[ midi interface but this time i can't really hear anything..

i tried both sync mode and midi mode both for nanoloop and mGB... no avail... can someone please clarify it for me!

Hi, i'm sorry if this is dumb but i just received my nanoloop cart along with the midi-usb adaptor and im trying to sync it to ableton...

i hooked up the adaptor to a gb link cable and a usb cable, ableton detects nanoloop midi but i can't seem to get it to launch nanoloop. i put nanoloop on the E mode top right corner this should be for external no?

Also, if i understood correctly, this midi-usb adaptor can also function as a midi interface for controlling mGB? i tried the same with an mGB cart but nothing worked.

Does the sequencer's time indicator move?

Possible reasons:

Unlike most music apps, nanoloop reacts to the mute switch.

The the global volume setting in nanoloop may be 0 or the instrument you use has 0 volume or is a sampler without sample. But of course these are not set to 0 be default.

To play a recorded sample, notes have to be set in the sequencer.

I've used nanoloop before so most these i had already checked except for mute switch! That actually was the problem!

Thanks oliver

I downloaded today nanoloop 3.26 on ipad and for some reason im getting zero sound output no matter what i try to change in the settings. the app has access and can record from the mic correctly but it does not play any audio.

all my other music apps on ipad working absolutely fine. ipad in general working fine.

i dont have any previous versions to roll back to unfortunately to test if its nanoloop or my ipad specifically...

anyone else having issues? please help because this is very frustrating!

i email isupport at nanoloop and tweeted Oliver... i hope i get a reply soon!

in my experience, it's fine.. i have both a 001 (NES classic) & 101 (graphite) that i use and have also had 2 micros, a ds lite and now am on my 2nd og ds.. while the sound is a little cleaner on the ds lite, i'm picky enough for recording that i still run noise reduction and there tends to be almost no difference over a PA.. i also prefer the form factor of the gba sp over the ds models, though the micros were obviously nice for that too... nanoloop 2.x is at least stable enough in it's clock speed that you can get away without the sync cable (no drift that i've noticed, even over 2-3 hr jam sessions), but i'd still rather have it considering the relatively small difference in noise levels... agree that i don't think it's worth the work to prosound either gba sp model
edit: forgot to add that you can start and stop nanoloop 2.x by putting it into slave mode when there is no link cable connected. when you return to internal clock, it starts again with the first note in the sequencer

Thank you so much for this! it was very insightful, glad to see that the difference in sound is negligible for live shows... if i ever decided to record id probably record loops by themselves and arrange in a daw anyways.

also im glad you said that the sync function works as a start stop (and that more importantly it restarts from the first note, this was not very clear in demos i saw) this will definitely help manual beatmatching.... but honestly from what you've told me i dont think i'll have to go that route....

I'll probably sync it up with lsdj or with the ipad running mGB on a gameboy.

I finally bought the nanoloop cart and i can't wait to receive it.... i could only try out the 1.7 demo as i don't have a gba flashcart only gb carts but even then it was awesome to mess around with. funny how almost 10 years ago i wanted nothing to do with nanoloop and now it feels like the holy grail rom for me!

I have a 30 minute set for march 31st i'll try to have a nanoloop driven set for that show!

Thanks again!

Also, If i decided to go with the DSLite for nanoloop, how do you manually sync it with other stuff (beatmatch it) because my understanding is once you load up nanoloop it starts playing automatically and can never really stop and start? how you guys go about beatmatching 2 nanoloops for example?

hey man so im like 3 months late but could you tell me your opinions on the mono vs nanoloop 2.7?
I've been an lsdj guy all my life and i decided to get into nanoloop for live shows and while im really digging 2.7's features and sound signature... running it on my SP leaves me with hissy nightmares and broken bass depth dreams.

I could run it on the DSlite but that way im stuck out of syncing to anything.... was thinking running the mono on the DMG to get the bass from there and everything else from the SP.... is there a big difference in bass depth and quality between the 2.7 on SP and mono on DMG?
