i'm not reading any of these lists

right now i'm really enjoying the decemberists and the hush sound
too many other good bands that i really like though

Pretty sure I sent you a link but if you didn't get it at the time you'll find that the link has expired, I'll have to upload it again later tonight.

might wanna fix the link there, just for posterity's sake.

@vellain: the vst's called "toad", by tweakbench. it's really starting to show its age!

I did consider those, but personally I think that they're more a matter of sound design than the arrangement and composition of music.

"when people spend time publicly handwringing about the authenticity/validity/fakebitness of X music vs Y music, I think how said tunes are made, while interesting, is a distant second to if they are good or not."

This is perfect, though!

yeah 8bc was a'ight
the amount of commenting on music was nice even if it was just a popularity contest
ctrix said nice things about a song i made one time and it felt boss
that's my story

I'm going to be spending the whole evening trying to think of an exception to the above statement

Well, one that isn't a snarky generalization tongue

the second one was definitely better, mainly due to the lack of vocals.
imo if you're gonna do this sort of music then you should use more authentic sounds or just drop the chip music aspect altogether, the toad vst has some decent stuff in it but spamming mario sfx makes your track sound incredibly amateur

If you don't mind stuff with rhythmic elements, Astropilot is fun. Some of Shpongle's softer stuff will probably fit in, too. If you haven't already, grab Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works vol. 2, it's kinda essential listening imo. Going with a very broad definition on "ambient" here, though! :V

Also: here's a (SHAMELESS PLUG FOR A) thing I did a while back. It goes through a few dynamic phases and touches upon the chaotic aspect later on. You might like it?

Rad song title because I am a crazy bible person. Enjoying the sounds too.

Haha, I was actually studying the book of Ecclesiastes at the time; good inspiration! tongue

Yeah if the delay can go fast enough perhaps get some Karplus-Strong happening! Sounds fun...

I mean if the SNES is a sample driven machine wouldn't MIDI be out of the question/useless without something to generate sound?

MIDI is just triggers and messages. You can use MIDI messages to trigger samples and change parameters and banks and all that; it wouldn't be much different to using the stock GM instruments (which are also just samples with loop points), in this regard.

indeed!

For sure, especially once they start entering the formal operational stage (aww yeah droppin' psyc101 all up in 'ere!)

But yeah! There's enough simple-language explanation there for people of any age to be able to fill in the blanks. I just thought it was funny that they were like "hey guys sawtooth and triangle waves!" without any visual cues, not even an oscilloscope or anything! tongue

True, but I don't think many kids would care enough to look into it. When I was 12 and actually starting to dabble in electronic music I still couldn't have cared less about saws and sines; I just wanted to put bass boost on everything :V
