Neil, in there any difference between the versions except the frequency table?
Maybe I'm in the wrong, but I'm under the impression that if you fix the frequency table for PAL, the notes do get in tune with the common note tuning, but it gets out of tune relative to tonal noise. If so, the NTSC version might be appropriate even for PAL systems if your music relies on tonal noise...
Anywhere care to confirm?

Or... Microcontroller+USB, similar to USB Gameboy cartridges.

Idea: Bitbang data using the controller port. Use Arduino or something to collect the data. Problem: Finding spare controller port plugs.

Re: EMS vs Bleep Bloop Carts [Info request] (40 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Kitsch: When I said "work fully or partially" my point was actually not SRAM. The 32M EMS cartridge cames in at least 4 different revisions. For the newest, and apparently most popular one, flashing will not work with the GBFlasher (BleepBloop/Smartboy) type writer. There's an older revision with 4 Atmel Flash chips, which will work, but only one of the chips will be available, so it's practically only an 8M cartridge when using a GBFlasher writer. There's yet another, even older, model which, if I recall correctly, will actually work fully with a GBFlasher writer. I'll have to come back on that one though. Still, unless you've been around for 10 years like me, chances are you have the newer model.

Does the Smartboy USB writer work with the old EMS 32MB carts?
It will actually work fully or partially on some of the older revisions of the EMS cartridges, but as a general rule, no, only SRAM and no flash.

Here's the "official" list of pros and cons. BleepBloop and Smartboy are based on the same design and have a lot in common.
Edit: Updated with pictures.
Bleep Bloop USB
+++++
Based on open source design, and is using standard FTDI drivers and an open protocol, which means that drivers and software are avaible on "all" platforms. (Windows 32/64, Linux and OSX.)
Gameboy can write to the flash memory, so LittleFM is possible. (Shameless plug.)
Battery holder for easy battery replacement.
USB on cartridge - smaller size.
-----
Based on open source design without permission - you might need sleeping pills to sleep well at night.
Some old batches used to manufacturing problems, although they should be fixed in all newer batches.
Is actually just 16Mb despite the advertised size.
A bit overpriced for what it is.
USB on cartridge - cannot backup savs from other flashcarts, GBcamera or games.
Does not support multiple games/programs.
Bleep Bloop "Infinity"
+++++
(Presumably still) Based on open source design, and is using standard FTDI drivers and an open protocol, which means that drivers and software are avaible on "all" platforms. (Windows 32/64, Linux and OSX.)
(Presumably) Gameboy can still write to the flash memory, so LittleFM is possible. (Shameless plug.)
FRAM means no need for battery.
USB on cartridge - smaller size. Does not support multiple games/programs.
-----
(Presumably still) Based on open source design without permission - chamomile tea can be a natural remedy for guilt-induced insomnia.
Is (presumably still) just 16Mb despite the advertised size.
Very overpriced for what it is.
USB on cartridge - cannot backup savs from other flashcarts, GBcamera or games.
Mark my words: If Infinity actually ever gets released, it will likely have stability problems and randomly corrupt data because the cartridge is using a microcontroller instead of programmable logic for RAM accesses.
Does not support multiple games/programs.
Smartboy Cartridge
+++++
Based on open source design, and is using standard FTDI drivers and an open protocol, which means that drivers and software are avaible on "all" platforms. (Windows 32/64, Linux and OSX.)
Gameboy can write to the flash memory, so LittleFM is possible. (Shameless plug.)
Is actually 32Mb.
Battery holder for easy battery replacement.
Separate USB writer - can backup savs from other flashcarts, GBcamera or games.
-----
Based on open source design without permission - at the very least try to keep your bedroom cool, well ventilated, silent and dark to improve the chance of sleeping well at night.
Separate USB writer - another item to keep track of.
Does not support multiple games/programs.
Bad availability because a batch was stuck in customs.
EMS 64M
+++++
An original, proprietary design - sleep well at night knowing you're not a scumbag, but a highly moral individual.
USB on cartridge - smaller size.
Supports multiple games.
Battery holder for easy battery replacement.
-----
An original, proprietary design - you need to rely on EMS to release drivers and software for various OS's. Today, only Windows 32/64 is supported. (However, the cartridge is using an FTDI chip so if the protocol was reverse engineered, open source software could be developed.) (Strike that. Not based on FTDI an chip. Nevertheless, open source saves the day!)
Is actually two separate banks of 32Mb of Flash - Games larger than 32Mb (if any) will not fit. Might be true for Pokemon Crystal.
All games/programs need to share the same 128 kB of RAM memory for their saved data.
Gameboy cannot write to flash memory, so no LittleFM.
USB on cartridge - cannot backup savs from other flashcarts, GBcamera or games.

I agree. This was probably the right way to go. People have been informed, everything that is relevant to say has been said, and this thread was going downhill. Thanks for the close, bleo. If anyone has anything important to say to me, shoot me a PM.

No seriously... Why are still talking about this?
If you want to talk 8bc drama.. go to 8bc and talk drama.
I posted this here because I thought some people might appreciate it, and most people, well everyone except you and Akira have been pretty chill about it. I don't think the aim of this site should be to never, ever discuss 8bc, but to avoid becoming 8bc. As long as this thread doesn't derail into flaming, trolling or other immature behavior, I don't see the problem. The drama is still on 8bc, this is just a discussion. But if you're really concerned, talk to Tim, he's the ultimate boss.
That said, I'd rather not her about the "epic lols".

I mean, how can a guy with cured meat in his avatar possibly be a criminal?
Meat n00b.
It's actually not cured meat, but Falukorv.
But in all seriousness, I wouldn't just dick around with Jose... sure he blows a lot of hot air, but if he does sue you a court will not look favourably on your unauthorized access, whether you did anything wrong with it or not. There is a reason why people were moving to get out of 8bc, and it was because Jose was becoming unstable and liable to throw an almighty legal hissy fit.
As e.s.c. pointed out, I'm from Sweden. I don't think anyone is untouchable just because they're out of jurisdiction, but I do think he'd have to come up with something more extraordinary in order to prosecute over the borders. I take my chances and I think I'm pretty safe. I think the only real risk I would be facing if the case actually goes through is to be a registered criminal in USA and possibly be denied entry if I were to travel there.
i bet you there will be more gossip about it on chipmusic than on 8bc haha
Well... http://8bitcollective.com/forums/viewto 49&p=1
8bc wins hand down on quantity, but we win on quality.
