Seems like just a low-pass filter with a single knob control where the resonance is (probably) turned off when the knob is at the top position, so you don't get those really high frequencies boosted.

Now, which flavor, that's a tougher one. And I think this type of clean resonant filter is exactly what you'll not find easily in a guitar pedal.

Could you argue that anyone using a megamem already owns a copy of the Nintendo logo by owning a gameboy?

Firstly, your personal morals isn't necessarily the law.
Secondly, you wouldn't be the target of the legal action, but the people who made Megamem.
Thirdly, it's a moot discussion anyway, since Sega v. Accolade set a strong precedent against this being a valid form of protection against anything. The DMCA interoperability exemption also points in the same direction, that using a simple string like that does not constitute a violation.

Maybe just more 1 week bans? tongue

Just a word of warning. Making a mixer is "easy". Anyone with reasonable electronics skill can do it. The hard part is making it well, which means both decent audio quality, and mechanical durability. The second of which is especially important for equipment that will be used on the road. I don't mean to insult you, but just make sure you don't produce duds.

If I rememeber correctly the reason why unlicensed developers did this was due to a lawsuit Sega had with an unlicensed Dev.

Actually, what Sega did was a little different, the text "PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA ENTERPRISES LTD." And that didn't hold up in court like you said. This was as early as 1992, so I'm not sure pirates would care enough to avoid showing the logo for this reason. But it would be interesting to see if there's any indication of the production year on the PCB. I think they do it just to be fancy.

And note that while the logo isn't shown on the screen with this method, it's still present in the ROM to pass the validation. If they wanted to sue, and they were likely to win, I think it wouldn't make any difference whether they displayed it on the screen or not as long as they distribute the graphics anywhere in the ROM.

Normally the Gameboy's internal boot ROM will check the logo and reject any game where the logo isn't correct. However, this memory area is read twice, once to copy the logo to video RAM and once to check that it's correct. So what a game can do is to activate one memory area, then another memory area with precise timings to both let the Gameboy boot ROM copy the custom logo to VRAM and pass the check.

Other cartridges that do this include Mega Memory, a 3rd party PDA type application and Nanoloop One, the funky PCB cartridge.

As always, I'm interested in getting thing like these as donations for research/preservation. Especially since you just want the plastic, and I'm mainly interested in the PCB. Though it would sort of feel like a shame to divide a rarity up into parts. Though, first you could it the cart PCB you want to put in it even fits well in the shell. Sometimes the pirates are a bit off on their measurements. But it's your cartridge and I'm asking to have something for free, haha.

The basic structure is, me and trash80 are the administrators, meaning full access to the server etc. Then there's a bunch of moderators, some of which I haven't been active for a while now.

Here's a list, also linked at the bottom of every page: http://chipmusic.org/forums/users/?mods

When the site was created, it was created in the ashes of 8bc, which was at the time going down the shitter. The moderation team mostly carried over from 8bc, and we were determined to not be 8bc and not make the same mistakes as that site. One thing we decided on was to disable post counts and use titles in order to try to avoid entitlement from being a regular or moderator. Of course, that has had the side effect that it might be unclear who's in charge.

Then there's the question of user behavior. At least *I* want this sit to be serious in nature. I want to be a place where people come and discuss music and other topics so as to be a useful resource. This is not something one person can wave a magic wand and fix. In the end, everyone, or a majority, would have to agree about this spirit to keep the site going in that direction. And so I will be called a fascist mod and idiot for closing people's joke threads, but what do you do?

Me and trash80 are also supposed to be in charge of development. Trash80 actually coded the majority of the side, and I've contributed a few small things, But because I've announced my changes, it might be easy to get the impression that I'm the major contributor. And trash80 is uper busy in his life. That is one of the causes of the stagnation of the site atm. Originally, the ite was planned to be much more feature rich, an integrated community with a calendar and other specialized features, and not just a forum with a music section tucked on top. And beyond improvements, the sites may need some tuning and optimization to avoid memory problem. All in all, what's lacking is a lot of work hours.

One possible way of solving this problem is by allowing other people to volunteer with development, but that would require finding people we trust.

Another thing is funding. Currently, the site is paid for by trash80 and is running on a slightly underpowered server. It's sort of fine atm, but there's the question, how to proceed? There are a couple of options here.

Ads: No. Donations: The thing with donations is that they're charity and usually targeted at a specific, immediate need. What would be needed for cm is continuity. It would be much more useful if people could continually donate even 50 cents a month (assuming that's not completely consumed by fees) if enough people did it, than donation drives where fewer people donate a bigger sum. A different approach to this would be to offer paid accounts with extra features, but what would those extra features be, and how do you avoid making the site less open in doing so?

But anyway, that's not an immediate problem atm anyway. Just speculating.

Closing this thread for now. Please see:

http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/12817 … community/

I'm closing the other thread to divert the attention to this thread. Here's a suggestion, which I might do if no one protests too loudly. In part to divide the discussion into two natural categories, in part to discourage off-topic discussion.

I've found that most discussions in the general discussion forum are one of two categories, either general music discussion (listening suggestions and such) or community.related (such as talking about people, events and websites.) So that's what I'm suggesting "general music discussion" and "community".

Thoughts?

No disrespect... Ok, fine, only 10% disrespect, but when did you become so lazy you couldn't hold your DMG in one hand and use the other hand to reach for your vaporizer to take a puff of *cough* tobacco?

Don't be so sure of that...

I am sure it will never the light of day, and that's from a direct discussion with him where he asked me to help with the project back in 2009. Sorry. hmm

We did discuss this when creating the site. We decided specifically not to have an "off-topic" forum, but instead a "general discussion" board for discussions that don't fit into any of the other forums. The difference between "off-topic" and "general discussion" is important. Things in general discussion should still be at least tangentially related to chip music culture or common interests that people might have. If you just want to post the latest joke image you found, go get a tumblr or something. CM as a whole is supposed to be reasonably on topic.
