Overall for the two years we waited, I'm extremely disappointed in overall features and usability.
It's more of a novelty product than anything really useful as far as live chiptune use or otherwise.
Mine sits in its shiny box in which I will probably put it up on eBay and hope to get my money out of it.

Distortion is great. You can go from normal to unrecognizable with one turn of a knob. Crunchy!

I'd be up for an external as I could use it for NES or Sega too.

I suggest the GQ-4X, like this one here. Software and ease of use make this one a winner. Link to ebay.

I also suggest staying away from EPROM's and stick with EEPROM's. You won't need a UV eraser, saving
a couple of bucks, but if you are looking to burn EPROM's for the Atari, you may not have a choice. Hard to
get Flash memory now in that size.
The other thing, this really is not the forum for this info. Start with a more technically savvy crowd who really enjoy
working with older hardware like the forums over at Nesdev.com. Yes they are specifically NES, but it's a great
jumping off place. link here:

I burn ROM's daily and sell them. Link here.

If someone steps up and trades you for it, I will send that person a free MOD3 upgrade kit for it
That is the cv/gate feature Insert Joint is referring to. That's worth $100.00 Takes about an hour to install
for someone with basic soldering skills.

If you are looking to alter/change the wave form to increase separation in phase, I would suggest the FM aid from Happy nerding. This is not an effect. It uses phase modulation (They describe as FM, but technically it is PM) based on wave forms that are built in. You also can inject your own carrier wave. This is a Eurorack module, but I use it for exactly what you describe.
