I've used HivelyTracker to generate some fun samples. It's a softsynth tracker for amiga, windows, mac and haiku which can save in the AHX format and its own native HVL format (which has expanded capabilities). It has a bit of a SIDlike sound to it.

I suppose people used module trackers to compose computer music in the 90s because those were the normal computer music composing programs back then.

I really loved the vocals, I must say. They sit up there with some of the most celebrated chip+vocalists people.

I decided not to make the rule "no discussion on the definition of fakebit or questioning the authenticity of another poster's recommendation" because somehow I was optimistic that THIS wouldn't happen, and because I don't like making rules like that. Oh well...
i dunno im more offended by the fact that sketchman could only think of 3 good examples of it than the etymology of the word
well you know how woozy my brain can be sometimes. I especially forget things when I'm trying to think of them. Your definition of fakebit is probably different than mine. Plus I didn't want to make a huge list to start with. It could be that maybe the music fooled and wowed me so much that I didn't realize or think to care that the music wasn't made on an NES or SID or Amiga.
I've seen ant1 refer to some of his stuff as fakebit so I guess I'll have to add him to the list. Oh! Also I forgot Protodome. Wow. And Zantilla.
I don't hold any feelings of inferiority towards "fakebit" as being inauthentic or whatever. Frankly I don't care about anything but the sound appealing to -- or challenging -- my tastes.
It's really confusing when people call their own music fakebit and then complain about feeling insulted by people calling it fakebit. I know I know... people like to be ironic and stuff but... eh :\
edit:
If we're just considering the use of DAWs and lots of post-processing (what i thought "fakebit" was...), I'd suggest MisfitChris
Yeah, that's more what I was thinking. I didn't really consider modules to be in the "fakebit" category. I was more thinking "DAWbit" when I made this thread, but didn't want to restrict it too much.
› 1 - Chipmusic on a modern PC
I just saw FoD's post, and yeah... I wish I had been here when that was made so I could just stop the thread there. I honestly don't like the term either, but I thought since established and good artists were using it to describe their own stuff that it was an appropriate term to use.

Oh come on you guys. Apparently i misinterpreted certain people's use of the word "fakebit" and didn't realize they were being sarcastic :\
Personally I feel the word to have been conceived in error, and should be dissolved (along with "8bit music") but people keep using it so I thought it was okay.

I need some good "so-called fakebit" recommendations because I keep hearing people talking about how fakebit is the bomb but I'm not hearing it (edit: this I don't mean the stuff I've heard isn't good, just that I haven't heard much that I recognized to not have been made with old trackers and stuff). So far... 4mat, Virt and... Zantilla rocks. I need more.
edit:
I don't care what your definition of fakebit is. It's probably different from mine. If you consider it fakebit and you think it's good, post it here. And I won't question the authenticity of the "fakebitness" of what is posted here. However, if you care to share the tool of choice for the recommendations, feel free.

1bit the only truebit
I'm in the same boat as Fearofdark on this one.
Also I might add I really enjoy the workflow in Beepola when using the SpecialFX engine. So much more conducive to attention to composition :3

the only thing I hate about the chip scene is that when someone asks a seemingly reasonable, or innocent question, people use it as an excuse to bicker about pointless shit
I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I don't think it is really fair to attribute this to the chip scene itself. Or even chipmusic.org (cuz I know that would be next )

I think the just-do-its kind of seem relevant to the information given in the OP. If they OP admits that they are able to make music when they are feeling unmotivated but simply hate the junk that they produce during this mental state, then clearly they have the capacity to "just-do-it", i guess...
edit: admitting that my powers of empathy are very laacking on this particular subject :S
