Some tips:

  • Use a brand new razor if you're having trouble. Razors lose a lot of their sharpness on the first few cuts, and having one of the proper sharpness makes a noticable difference in how smoothly this process can go.

  • Definitely go slow. As painstaking and time consuming as this process can be, it's worth doing right. Obviously.

  • If you really don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, ask someone else to do it for you, either as a favor or as a professional job. You'll be happier in the long run.

The DMG may have the best sound available, but when you ask too much (Heavy Tables processing), it will just crash (so will the pocket).

Confirmed. I've been able to write tables that crash the DMG at high tempos for LSDj keyboard live play.

It only took two pages to degrade into dick jokes.

Guys, I know we can do better than this. Next DMG confessional thread, let's try to do it in under ten posts!

Oh, cool, thanks for the new information. I didn't mean to get all about the semantics on you a minute earlier, sorry. wink

As you develop a style and you really find out what kind of music you want to make, you can collect the right gear to do it with.

Or, maybe your style will develop around the gear you have. Either way, there's no right or wrong.

Ah, the yin and yang of the creative endeavor. smile

I'd agree here, but I think there are a lot of indirect and less tangible things that are learned from playing with new equipment, tools, or ideas; especially if music isn't all of what you do. Hackers, modders, and developers get a lot of out playing with new toys. wink

As mentioned above, there is a considerable amount of background noise when using the CGB, but the clever and ever crafty chip-genius EvilWezil has even discovered a work around for that when recording, which can be found here: http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/6976/ … inversion/

Oh man, thanks for reposting that! I've always had a noise issue with my CGBs; I've pro-sounded them pre-pot and all and still have some issues with low signal to noise ratio.

I'd always suspected my soldering in the back of my mind for some paranoid reason, although I'm pretty sure nothing I could add to the circuit in that modification would introduce more noise or degrade signal…

Then live with the double-edged sword of having a very convenient portable tracking device with very difficult to find stereo output adapters. sad

I don't know the ROC crew personally, but I have family there… I'll ask about the city.

Game Boy Color and DMG/MGB are apples and oranges in many regards, and this entire argument is sort of a moot point.

LSDj is a program for Game Boy Color. Neither "Handles the program better" specifically as it is related to LSDj, but you can write songs in LSDj on a Game Boy Color that will slow down or play less than ideally on a Pocket or an original Game Boy.

Other specific demoscene / homebrew software will only run correctly or optimally on Game Boy Color. Pushpin and Carillon tracker are some examples of this; Pushpin will not run on a non-color Game Boy, and Carillon has extra features that are inaccessible on a DMG/MGB.

Either way, both of these devices are so inexpensive that you can easily own multiples of both without busting the bank, and if you get more involved with LSDj, Game Boy music, or Game Boy development, you'll definitely end up with multiples of each hardware iteration.

Ironically, the guitar actually did belong to her other boyfriend. sad
