I've run the chip through a distortion pedal, boss metal zone (shhhhhhhhh...). still thinking about applying it live, probably for noise sets.
I have only recorded the results a couple of times. I use it at the end of this song

That goes for any genre.
chiptune has a hard time with that becuase in its raw form there isnt much people can connect to.
For some, this is where the "fake" comes in

if you want to connect to the average person, odds are you need to present something that they understand immediately.

There are a fair number of other established outlets already accomplishing what OP is starting. if you want to go for it, go for it. it can't hurt. at the least,  I'd recommend opening up communication with the chip communities you are, probably unknowingly, emulating.
