Ok. I did a lot of research and i think i annoyed some people in the process. Ill give you what i know from a neutral point of view before bullets start flying

It all depends on what you want from your gameboy. A lot of chiptuners will prefer the DMG because it has the best bass sound. Also, they like it better because you can fit more mods into it. Also, 4 AA batteries will of course last longer than 2 AAA batteries. There was also some controversy with the MGB because it drained the battery really fast to run LSDJ. However, the new 64mb ems cartridge has fixed the issue and this is no longer a problem. Justin and Kitsch can agree.

The MGB, despite having slightly inferior sound, has the edge in being more portable. If you're on the move a lot, its a better size to carry around. Pro-sounding it can give it that extra kick it needs with the sound. The MGB is a good choice for beginners because they are only learning the program, and not doing shows. So sound is not exactly vital. On the other hand, you might prefer the DMG because you can learn on it, and then start performing without having to buy a new gameboy.

It also depends on what you plan on doing with LSDJ. Are you in to perform or do you just want a (kickass) hobby? If performing is your plan, then learning on the DMG is a better option. If you want a hobby, carrying around an MGB wherever you go is better for chiptuning on the metro or waiting in a bar for friends etc. since you dont need a carrying case for it.

MGB=pocket.      DMG=original.           If you didn't know already.

You have no idea about the fire you started...

and dotMatrix, not all chiptune is 8bit.. but really though, that is a whole other discussion which no one ever wins, or helps inform anyone in any way.. heh

thank you. I didn't know that. I meant to say "sounds like chipmusic" and "is chipmusic" or as you said, 100% chiptune and "mixed"
I'm still learning terminology and its application. I don't want to start a debate on that.

maybe you all have heard this cover by gamechops on youtube, but this is one of the best 8bit covers of Something About Us. (no broken gameboys)

just wanted to put in a high note in the conversation. I'm not going to give critique because while I get the distinction and you need to work on the music, I'm no one to talk because I myself am not experienced enough to be telling people what they messed up on.

I also noticed that chiptunes created with an atari, commodore 64, LSDJ, NES, SNES etc. sound waaaayy different from chiptunes made with other, more common media, like garageband, etc. The distinction is quite obvious, and you can put chiptunes into 2 very basic categories:
-made with 8bit instruments
-not made with 8bit instruments
8bit instruments being the NES, gameboy, atari, etc.

I have a feeling that the category of chipmusic that would become mainstream would be the one that is made with programs that mainstream composers already use, since the goal would be to crank out more songs faster and easier, I suppose.
The chipmusic that would remain underground, then, would be the one we are all used to. It simply takes more time to make a song in LSDJ than in garageband. You have to program the instruments in, and then even give them commands in the table screen. Also, LSDJ has a high learning curve, and I doubt that any current composer would adjust to it when they can "replicate" the sound in the programs they already use.

music can do whatver the fuck it wants to.
none of us have any control over it and its rarely worth getting jealous or angry over.
anyone who is going to make any money out of chip music is propably going to be one of the lizard people anyway.

Those scaly fuckers....

I like that its getting more popular, but if it falls on tue wrong hands, it may get domesticated, as said before. However, big community doesnt mean mainstream. Lots of people can make chipmusic in underground community, and theres loads more space for many more people. To me, mainstream means domesticated and cookie cutter; monopolized. The more chip artists there are, the more variety and diversity of style arises, which is amazing.

If they start mass producing DMGs, MGBs, and CBGs again, Ill be really happy. They could mass produce the consoles in large numbers, and sell them in bulk to guys like kitsch and Justin, and they could make 'em look purty for us.

I spent $105 on an MGB (don't hate. Im really new and Im on the move a lot) but it only has Prosound and biverted backlight. If you want, you can check thursdaycustoms.com if you havent already. From experience, getting a dependable music instrument is a lot wiser while starting out. So id keep in mind to get a gameboy that has everything working just fine and worry about bling later on.

I can. You just need to wait a while. I'm swamped with Art School and I'm doing some designs for Justin Thursday. I can probably do something for you by this Sunday or next Tuesday. send me a private message and we can talk out the specifics.

€200

When you get famous, you should sell pink cartridges with that sticker for like €90 a piece.

I need to find a sticker cover for my EMS cart. Thats a cool idea, tio.

Can i ask what the pink cartridge is?

I did find the reverb odd for the gameboy, but i thought it was all you and your lsdj skills. Still my favorite, though!
And don't feel bad because you didn't write it. You actually managed to bring the feeling of the original song to a completely different platform and music genre. That's no easy feat.

My favorite "gameboy only" song is moonlight sonata performed on LSDJ only by Danimal Cannon.
