It's really cool so far. Definitely a learning curve, but I could see more abstract game boy artists using this instantly.
Would be awesome to see this sort of thing working with the wav channel one day, or even the noise channel for all those crazy thrash dudes.

Thanks for making this humbleTUNE!

PS: Is everyone else getting fairly substantial fuzz/feedback when playing notes? I've tested it on 3 gameboys.

Looks really cool! Can't wait to try this on a DMG when I get home. From what I played with on an emulator this is some really great stuff.

Thanks! I'm super-happy with this. I also really love how the backlight changes between bright pink and a nice purple depending on the angle.

I meant to add: I like your attention to detail with the green battery LED too.

Will be interesting to see what you come up with too!

Figure 1. Customized Game Boy. The front shell is the original green PIL model. The backlight is the 4 LED white model from Hand Held Legend. The screen is a light grey replacement from Kitsch-Bent.

Figure 2. Bottom right view of the customized Game Boy. The back shell is from a 1989 model.

Figure 3. Top left view of the customized Game Boy, pictured with a Bung Doctor 16M cartridge (inserted) and a Bung GB XChanger. Note the orange power switch.

Figure 4. Close-up of the customized Game Boy's buttons. The clear orange button is from Kitsch-Bent; the other button is from a 1989 ('grey brick') model.

Figure 5. Wiring for the customized Game Boy's backlight.

Nice!

the conversation wasn't that interesting, i was worried about how hard it could be to occupationalise my degree and bummed that i don't have a lot of time to make a lot of music. it was just a lot of stuff i needed to hear from someone older and wiser than myself and it was really cool that it was this guy i basically just met then. singing ay yo, how good is chiptune

Yeah, I really like bryface. He's a really down to earth guy.

that shit was awesome.

i once nearly stole some expensive drink out of a jug that trash80 and ctrix were sharing cause it was clear and sitting on the bar next to the jug of water and i thought it was water. lolz were had.

how i got to have a conversation with bryface that basically stopped me from quitting university. feels surreal to me sometimes!

Cheers!

Did they notice?

Also tell us more about that bryface conversation! Sounds interesting.

Haven't done anything *massively* crazy yet. I played squaresounds festival covered in bright blue electroluminescent wire once. That was fun.

Most awkward thing was before that show, I was sitting at a cafe with a good handful of the performers for that night. I kind of knew everyone except for this one guy who was reclining back in his chair, shades on, tapping away at his phone. Very fashionable. I was a bit nervous as I didn't know anyone super-well yet and so for whatever reason I decided to pour a glass of water for everyone at the table while we waited for our burgers and beer to arrive. I go around grabbing everyone's glasses, one by one, and then I got to the cool guy with the shades, so I said something like "err....hey man, I don't think I know you yet, i'm Josh." He looks up, just quickly says "hey, i'm ash" and carries on. I lean back. A few seconds pass. Then godinpants/peaches the wale leans over and half whispers ".......that's sabrepulse".

Damn.

why 7F, instead of 00 ?

cause 00 is usually where the first actual idea i come up with ends up going, and 7F feels more separated

I drink deep of the chaos.

Chip lyfe.

I could listen to this forever.

By default I'm a lazy musician.

Most days inspiration doesn't just descend from the heavens; I have to work hard to get it and once I have it I have to use it quickly or it fades.

It's funny, believe it or not, often inspiration comes from looking at pictures of shows I've played, or pictures of other artists performing.
It stirs up that nervous/excited feeling in my stomach which makes me think "you should probably put the extra effort in so that you can keep playing shows". So maybe it's actually adrenaline that helps me write.

I've also found the op-1 synth to be very inspirational for coming up with little melodies and playing along with things I already have.

As far as emotion goes, often i'll have little scraps of melodies that I'll start to assemble and from there thoughts, images, emotions start coming to mind from that. And then i'll develop those melodies in accordance to those thoughts, feelings, etc.

Hope that helps somehow.

depends on if you still want to have claim to that song. fame from your creation might be more valuable...

I feel like this mentality often dupes a lot of people into conceding into not charging for their production expertise.  Which makes companies offer guys like me "an amazing opportunity to get exposure!" where its like "yo, you really contacted the studio to get me to work on something….  for free?  Im sorry I have to decline, talked to DTE energy and they said they wouldn't accept "exposure" as a form of payment"

If you feel like your work is worth something, charge for it.  People on here seem to got the right idea on prices ^^

Yeah, and sure, if I was unemployed or a teenager with heaps of spare time, perhaps I'd be up for making a freebie in return for exposure. But i'm an adult with very little time for my own creative stuff. If you want me to use that time on your things, it's going to cost.
