This isn't always the case :\

Yeah, whoops, forgot about that. So, it is entirely possible that you will pay for free at a show with a cover charge.

also, pay to play events are very real as well.

Yes. One of the nice things about the chiptune community is that you can start out playing open mics and eventually get gigs (as long as there are chiptune events in your area). It's also a very small community so you can easily get in touch with people who are organizing gigs and can get you on lineups. The more typical music "scenes" are much more difficult. Unless you know the right people, or somehow manage to be some kind of indie blog darling with thousands of fans before your first show, you will most likely struggle to get that first show. Mine was a pay-to-play... I had to sell 10 tickets in advance just to get the spot. I ended up making a little money when all was said and done, but the venue wasn't willing to let me play without that $100 deposit up-front, and I had my work cut out for me trying to convince my friends to buy tickets from me in advance. Not fun.

I would play for free if it made sense. Remember that you can always sell merchandise regardless of what the show is. When it comes to playing for pay, you usually only make money if there's at least a minimum number of people coming through the door (in past cases for me, I don't make money on the first 10 people). It also requires a cover. So one of the benefits of playing for free is that no one has to pay cover, and in that case you might reach more people.

It grinds my gears so much when people use suddenly more than once in a sentence. Kills the mood, you know?

I was wondering what happened with this! Thanks for the heads-up. I'm sure Byzanite is waiting for that other site to come back up before he announces it.

Anyway people should go download this, it's great. Especially that final track.

Yep.

To be fair, Blip Festival invariable does an incredible job when it comes to booking a variety. I was more referring to the scene in general.

As long as people only listen & like the gameboy stuff over at that other chipmusic site, things are not gonna change.

It's pretty sad that this comp has devolved to this.

They're not just expensive, they're usually small and dirty unless you are willing to pay upwards of $200. It could be affordable if you share with 4 other people, but if you aren't gonna be in the room much you should definitely go for a hostel or try to find someone to crash with.

"have you got any DJ [some guy who makes chavvy bassline music]?"
"i'm not a DJ and this is a gameboy, it doesn't support mp3s"
"oh"

I've had stuff like that... really with any kind of electronic music you are going to get haters, at least in the USA. Not related to chip, there was the time I was DJing at a student club in Princeton, and some girl came up and said "could you play some dance music? like, NOT techno?" and my friend walked over after she walked away and said "yeah she's an idiot, what she basically wants is just Lady Gaga and anything else she's heard on the radio." The worst part is I wasn't playing techno at all, it was house & indie stuff.

Then there was my first show in NYC where I was doing half chip and half dirty electro stuff with Ableton and some girl, totally wasted, came up and said "do you have such-and-such by the so-and-so" and while I couldn't figure out what song she was asking for, I eventually figured out what was going on and said "no, you don't understand, I'm not DJing, this is all my own music and I'm playing it right now." It's just so hard to explain to people that laptops and gameboys can actually be synthesizers... they always think you're DJing.

Then there's all the people that call DS-10 Dominator "the DS10 DJ." Rough.
