I was just thinking the same thing. When/how do we send you our songs? I've been sitting on mine for a good while now.

I take bloody ages making songs so another month before submissions would be SWEET! Then again, an earlier deadline might actually kick me into action a little bit. This message is therefore pointless. Please ignore.

I dont wanna be mean but if you find a lack of motivation to do music, don't. Thats applicable to any form of art. Theres already way too many of us.

That's not mean, it's just stupid. Or sarcastic, I can't really tell.

I don't know if I fully follow your point, but I agree with most the stuff you said. I definitely think the 'just do it' thing is a bit unempathetic. The more specific stuff's cool though, like the 'Monday night, music night' idea.

The main thing I think should be squashed out of discussions like this is the "if it's difficult to get motivated to make music, maybe you're not meant to make music" line. All due respect to anyone here who said that, but I think that's needlessly discouraging, and just completely misinformed. There are a million reasons for a lack of motivation, most of which are are signs that you ARE meant to make music (assuming for now that the "meant to do something" notion is at all sensible, which I'm pretty sure it isn't). The very fact that someone's feeling demotivated, but wants to put in effort to overcome that lack of motivation means they damn well should be doing music. If struggling to make music for a while isn't enough to put them off, that's a person who should be making music.

EDIT: Good post by spacetownsavior there. Clearly there are both empathetic and non-empathetic just-do-its.

What a fantastic article. You're right, that's required reading.

That seems a bit black and white to me. The energy he used starting this thread might turn out to be a blessing. It's motivating in itself to know that other people have the same issues you do.

I can relate to this all too well my friend. I'm just generally a lazy git in life, but with music I constantly need to remind myself of what inspires me and why I want to do it. The problem is I'm at this awkward phase where it's still really difficult to make music, because of technical issues like making some instrument sound the way I want it to, or getting the various instruments to mesh well together etc etc, but the stuff I end up making is showing signs of sounding pretty good. So it's frustrating to have so much difficulty getting it to sound as good as I think it can.

I'm fairly confident that as I get better and things become easier, I'll be able to focus more on the fun stuff like composition, and less on the irritating technical things. But while I'm at this awkward transition stage, it's tough to keep that in mind. Anyone else in that annoying limbo between n00bism and competency?

Ok dood, I sent you my email. As mentioned in the message, I'll go for Mewtwo. My style's more suited to that bad boy. Would have been hilarious to do Jynx, though.

And that kind of looks like a smiley that a dad who isn't very good with technology would do. You're a dad, sir!! I don't care what the dictionary says!

That's such a dad joke I think you can officially call yourself a dad now, whether or not you have kids. The definition of 'dad' should be amended to 'a male parent and/or a male who makes unbelievable dad jokes'.

And the fact that I enjoyed the joke probably makes me a 'crazy uncle Tony', whether or not my name is Tony. Which it isn't.

i think you're fine no matter what you do. just don't get famous.

That's my constant fear, and why I always asks these kind of legal questions. I don't think I will get famous, cause I have next to zero chance, but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking, "But what if I do... It'll all be illegal, therefore the fame will only be momentary."

You don't need to fear this at all. Obviously I'm not saying "You'll never be famous! Give up!" smile What I'm saying is, while getting well-known is a lot about luck, you absolutely need to satisfy the prerequisite of being really good at your music. You need to be really good. So unless you think you're already THAT GOOD that you could become really well-known with one of your songs, you really don't need to worry.

When you feel like you're getting close to that standard where things could kick off and sky-rocket for you with any one of your upcoming tracks, that's when to think about it. Be careful with your samples, maybe just stop sampling completely. The fact that you have old songs that used samples doesn't matter a bit, it's not like you'd be trying to sell those.

TL;DR, don't worry about it smile

This is a great idea. A.) Are you still open to new additions? B.) How limited is the style requirement? I'm not strictly a chiptune guy. I use chippy stuff along with non chippy pads/basses/percussion. I can play up the 8-bit element for this obviously, but I'll sit out if the album is to showcase 100% 8-bit stuff.

Side note, I absolutely loved the "Are You a Boy or a Girl?" title suggestion. That gets my vote  x1 million.

EDIT: Sorry, should have read the whole thread. I see someone else asked the 100% chiptune question. I'll assume I'm OK then. I'll have to get back to you on a pokemon choice. I don't remember which ones I liked. Oh Jesus, maybe I should do Jynx...

Bumpy bump! You still playing this Walter? I'm probably gonna pick it up tonight, on PC, it turns out. I had to buy a graphics card to get the job done, but no pain no gain, eh?

Judging by the lack of activity in this thread, I assume there aren't many cm.o folks playing this game?

The man who wrote Akrillic and Beach from Plok. And therefore, a god.

I don't want to move back to Cardiff because of chiptunes. I want to move back to Cardiff because I love the place and have loads of friends there. Knowing that there's a chip scene developing there is the proverbial cherry on top.

Incidentally, I won't be around for Superbyte, which is a proverbial steaming pile of shite in the proverbial face.

Bodders!

It's so weird that I already know a guy in Swansea who calls me Bodders.

So it's a bit shit but I don't think I can make this August event. Le sad. But I've got my eyes set firmly on that November thing (make it happen fellas). Knowing that there's some solid chiptuning going on down there has made my week lads, nice one. It's also added fuel to my "move back to Cardiff" fire. CAERDYDD MY DARLING I'M COMING!

I didn't know Dempsey's had an upstairs. This thread is blowing my mind repeatedly. Good on ya mate for getting some chip going on in Cardiff, that's great work. Hope I can get down there for it.
