One does not wish to be unduly harsh at this critcal moment however, if I may interject, I would like to put forward the following query:

The subject of this thread was "opinions on using more modern devices for chip music", was it not?

I understand that numerous participants in this communication are more interested in the follow up question "what is authentic chipmusic?", nonetheless, in my humble opinion it would be delightful to discover at this juncture peoples thoughts on which devices in particular seem to hold esteem in the community regarding usefulness in the future of this seemingly cherished and adored "chipmusic".

@ e.s.c:

I understand your premise in that you are implying that many respected musicians have indeed been drug users and/or "lgbt", howevever, at no point in my post did I categorically state that I was opposed to these things but rather that the assumption that LSDJ is somehow intrinsically "psychedelic drug software" or that LittleGameParkTracker is somehow intrinsically "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender" software has previously been irksome for oneself. You sir, have a bee in your bonnet.

More chipmusic software on modern devices eh?

I dont know if this is entirely relevant but...I would really love to see more chipmusic-ish software come to android.

The reason I stumbled upon all of the chipmusic websites at first was not really because I wanted the chiptune sound but more because I wanted a portable synth/sequencer that runs on batteries (I must say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that using gamepad controls to create music is very comfortable compared to touchscreen "cradle and prod" and desktop "hunch, type and click").

First of all I wanted a yamaha qy100, then discovered milkytracker for PDA, then LSDJ and LittleGameParkTracker...now I use Sunvox (awesome). I also had a brief forray into PSPSEQ but gave up in the end (someone should get the code for those PSPSEQ synths)...

After a while though, "chip" kind of sounds have grown on me and it seems to me that good chipmusic is all about complex melody and harmony, rather than big fat sounds, deep sound design and a two note melody with a four to the floor beat and a one note bassline...which is what a lot of modern music is.

It would be cool to see the PS Vita get some chip-like software.Maybe LittleGameparkTracker with a mixer screen, graphical sample editor, non-sampled oscillator instruments and more effects and effects columns? (If not PSVita then maybe the windows Linx vision 8 gaming tablet http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing … 25011329:s...I love the gamepad control method)

Or maybe even for some big manufacturer like roland or korg to realize that gamepad controls with a tracker-like interface is the way to go (for sit back in the sofa comfort and detailed micro-editing) and create some new modern portable synth/sequencer with those ideas in mind.

On a totally unrelated sidenote it kind of annoys me that your average guy looks at the name "LSDJ" and thinks, "they must be taking or selling acid"...alternatively..."that software must be for making acid house music"...whilst your average guy sees the name LGPT and thinks "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender"...

yay. certainly, without question, the arrival of the great troubador Mark Salud, known only in the hidden cloisters and mystic brotherhoods.
Mark Salud delivered a poignant ballad sweeter than joy itself, and has been well recieved throughout the ages...

Hail fellow! Well met... I understand the desire for portability and yes, the 3DSXL is a nice thing to hold, verily.
Well, in that case, I would say to you have you tried KorgDSN12? I suppose its not exactly chip related, or a tracker, but it is an emulation of quite an old synthesizer and looks pretty decent...check it out!!!

I would say to you, use Sunvox...
To be honest, using single cycle waveform samples is not that different from the waveform control you have in LSDJ. (the gameboy soundchip does have interesting looking waveforms...probably a lot of thought went into the design of them at the time. The square is not just a square, it has strange resonant peaks).

For example, in milkytracker there is a waveform generator in the sample editor which can give you perfect square, triangle, saw and noise.
You can use the "draw" function to smooth off the corners of your square wave into a rounded square, or saw into a sineish saw. Then use the envelope to create LFOish volume ramps and fades. You can build up rythms that way if you count out the right lengths in ticks. Sunvox and milkytracker are excellent pieces of software...Sunvox is more modern and will give you filters, distortion and many more possibilities. Maybe if you prefer gampad controls or if you feel that the real power of LSDJ lies in the tables, quisby, then you may want to give LittleGameParkTracker a go. I'm not hating on LSDJ or anything. But I do feel like gameboy-only music is a little played out...

Forget about gameboys.

If you really enjoy gamepad controls (they do make it very comfortable to write music for long periods of time) buy a PSP 3000, install halfbyte loader, install LittleGameParkTracker...Use the monowave sample.

Don't use trackers that dont have accurate BPM...save yourself the headache later on when you sample your chip style sound design into a DAW. LittleGameParkTracker still has all the tables and stuff you need to get that sound (but it also has accurate BPM).

LSDJ is really good for "pure chip" people and electrician hobbyists who like modifying gameboys and building midi boxes. By pure chip I mean you only use gameboys soundchip/c64 sid chip/Soundblaster's opl3...real soundchips... and nothing else...As for the midi sync option, can you really be bothered to solder all that shit together, only to have it break later on? As for USB gameboy carts, they are a phucking headache for a while, then they break.

Get an android phone/tablet, use sunvox.

Install renoise...use renoise plugin capture with whatever chip VST.

Thats just my opinion...knave

Well in that case I declare that the whole pocket op series is a load of bollocks.

In my humble opinion Sunvox and G-stomper (VA-beast synth-sequencer) are hands down the best music making apps for android, followed by caustic and LittleGameParkTracker on PPSSPP...knave

I highly recommend Sunvox and G-stomper (The VA-beast synth-sequencer is very nice now).

Sunvox sequencer and sound design possibilities are DEEP and meaningful.

If you are using LSDJ in an emulator to export .wavs, you will not be able to sample what you have made for use in another program because it does not feature true BPM (only framerate based speed).

I understand some people love LSDJ because of the gamepad based controls and the comfort that offers. In that case PPSSPP emulator will run LittleGameParkTracker (LGPT, not to be confused with "LGBT" -sigh-) on android. That way you will have true BPM patterns you can sample into other programs (Sunvox for example).

FUCK YES!!! HAPPINESS!!!

By this you are confirm only happy scales for pocket operator?

I heard that all of the pocket operator series have no sharps or flats...only diatonic...

can anyone confirm or deny?

Does anyone remember an impulse tracker module from the early nineties which had a vocal sample in it saying "the raving sock monkeys are dragging me down"?

littlegamepark tracker is beeter

Not sure what happened exactly but after a reinstall it worked perfectly on all platforms.
Maybe I just had too many samples in samplelib before.
