yeah I want to know this too for sure.

This. The phasing has to be some witchcraft. Super fine oscillation and detuning are not sufficient explanation.

I found a lot of the things you did to be good in nature.

It seems like you have a good idea as to what makes a good hook and melody, however, you made a mistake that a lot of people do when starting with 2xLSDJ - you seem to make your layering not obvious enough. It sounds backwards, and it is certainly something learned over enough time, but for the most part this track sounded like it could be done as 1xLSDJ. Make sure that when you use 2xLSDJ you don't fill that extra space with crap, but little details that help flesh out the overall sound. Don't think that it needs to be all 8 channels all the time, but when you can try and milk those extra resources to color your sound!

As far as form goes, it sounds like a lot of the stuff I made my first year of using LSDJ. Lots of repetition of anything that sounded "good" and while those parts were great, the repetition killed the songs. The repetition didn't kill yours, but man, rhythmic variation would boost this song up to the next level instantly. Instead of having those constant dit dit dit dit dit dit dit dit 8th/16th note patterns on the same notes, try making some sort of cool syncopated pattern. It would double as a great chance for you to introduce the drums sooner.

Another thing I noticed is that your bass in the WAV channel sounded kind of weak. Make sure your pulse channel envelopes aren't too high, it'll be out of balance and make the bass not be in focus. There's a few ways to tackle this problem withing the 2xLSDJ setup - using a spare pulse channel with a 50% pulse width to play in unison with the bass (but often displaced by an octave since the pulse channels go only as low as C3), doubling the WAV channel of one Gameboy with the WAV channel of another often using a sine-wave-based instrument to really fill out the low range.

If you want to talk more, hit me up here via PM. There certainly is potential here, and with a lot of work you can make an excellent 2xLSDJ track!

Cool! $12.50 is going your away in a few moments!

Today. How much are the two stickers for me?

Let's not delete the thread, if someone has a similar problem later we can link them to it without having to re-explain ourselves wink best of luck

I use a reference song when working with LSDJ, I used to use the song "Legacy" from Danimal Cannon and Zef's "Parallel Processing" and I do my best to match things like how heavy the bass sounds in my mix, etc. The point being that Dan's pretty great at mixing his stuff on the Gameboy to optimal live performance. I'll play the song then tweak the EQ and walk around the venue and tweak it until I know the track sounds the best it can. Then I'll go back and try it with my songs, and typically only minimal tweaks are needed.

I've been making sure my tracks fit the "Legacy" standard at home for a while now, so I don't even need "Legacy" on my carts. However, it is still my golden standard to measure by for live 2xLSDJ sound. Bear in mind, it's cool to use someone else's song for a soundcheck when no one's really around, and if people ask, tell them who wrote it wink

But yeah, mono mix, and generally have one of your songs play while you walk around the venue and listen to it.

Errrr I meant just the GBA game sticker and the LSDJ sticker haha. I am also doing the GBA game for a present xD

I'd want a sticker for each stargazer, one for the repro and the other to keep for myself :3

Also gonna call dibs on a sticker :3

Try using the regular version of LSDJ. Make sure the vanilla ROM works wink

If you are looking for a true honest review I think you need a side by side comparison with a GBC with a front light from a SP.  That is the standard IMHO.

Doing this tomorrow when my stuff should be here. Stay tuned!

I looked at Kitsch's frontlight pic closer and thought that the contrast pot might not be all the way up on that GBC. It's located under the batteries compartment and is usually hidden by a sticker of the same colour as the shell. Adjusting it might make the screen sharper and easier to read.

Kitsch, in the tutorial the solder points seem to be the same as for the SP frontlight. Aren't those only 3V and unreliable? I remember they made the backlight flicker with the sound on a GBP (they share smiliar PCB elements with the GBC). Why not use the stable 5V from the cartridge connector? Just wondering. Thanks.

The solder points are reliable, as far as I can tell. I did a quick recording test comparing a GBC with a frontlight installed using those points (SP frontlight, not a Chinese clone or kitsch's product which should be here in the mail for a review soon) and I compared it to my Gameboy Light, which I use to record with and play live.

I use my GBC daily for playing Pokemon Crystal version, and the guts of this GBC have had a frontlight installed since... probably 3 years ago back when Bibin showed his face more, he was nice enough to talk to me about Sonic hacking stuff on IRC and walk me through some of the mod. You can see that the sound on a GBC with no prosound is comparable to a GB Light with the backlight on, prosound being used. Both Gameboys were recorded with their pots cranked all the way up, and I tried to record them as close to peaking in Audacity as possible.

What this hints at, in my opinion, that the power draw is pretty stable from the 3V line. Part of my other reasoning for this is that the battery indicator LED is always in tune with how quickly the batteries drain even with the light, and for me the screen has never ever flickered or popped or shown any lack of brightness. Very consistent piece of kit (the SP frontlight), cannot wait to try doing some Pokemon Crystal runs on kitsch's frontlights and see the difference. smile

You either install the lens flipped a different way (I believe it's toothed-edge-faces-screen) or if you are talking about inverting colors, I think that requires using a different color scheme in LSDJ.
