That bottom switch looks like the kind I use.  I love them cause they're so tiny and out of the way.  I got a bag of 100 on ebay for less than $10 like a year ago.  China FTW!

Yah they can be fitted anywhere, but on the other hand if you drop the boy this tiny piece might be the first to go. I'm looking for something bigger and stronger but not too big. No luck so far.

Hi there,

Does anybody know nice abrasive to get rid of tiny to middle sized scratches from the clear plastic? Don't want to get to sanding unless I absolutely have to. Thanks!

Budusy12,

I took this sound to lights pcb, removed the microphone and soldered left channel output to it. Thus it responds on the sound of the gameboy instead of the microphone. I also had to modify it a little bit to fit in the battery compartment. But I doubt I'm gonna this one again, I'd rather make smaller one myself.

I've just finished this geezer:

It has:

Rechargeable Li-Po cell 2.5A with a mini-usb charger

Ugly cut hole

Charging

Charged

Sound reactive LEDs

Wire madness

Looks pretty nice in the dark

Pitch

Found tiny 50k pots and switches. Had to glue to the shell.

Also
- Internal pro sound
- White power LED
- Shell from ASM
- Buttons from Kitsch
- Backlight from HandheldLegend
- GBA SP speaker (btw this one's actually quieter than native)

Since I had to glue some parts to the shell (switch, pot and charger port) I used JST connectors to keep parts separable. I think these guys are pretty handy for this kind of mods.

Looking at it I think it's lacking biverted screen. I'll probably add one some time.

I have never tried cleaning inside of one, but you could just replace it with a new jack.

Sure that's always an option, but I like the screw holes fixing the guy in place.

I rarely see clean headphone jacks in used gameboys. Does anybody now a way to clean them? I tried soaking into 70% / 30% vinegar / water which works great for corroded battery contacts, but not so good for the jack. Maybe higher concentration of vinegar could help, but I'm afraid to dissolve the plastic parts.

I'm asking because for the sake of space I'd like to utilize native jack for 3.5mm pro-sound.

Thanks!

Thanks for advice. But I'm having hard times to find these tacomidi connectors, or what is it anyways? smile

Hello there,

I entered chiptune quite recently and there are several things I don't completely understand. So I was hoping you guys could clarify a couple of things and help a noob. I'm trying to sort out which mods are real must have and which could be omitted for the sake of space. I'm looking into arduinoboy right now and trying to figure the following:

1. Arduinoboy and pitch mod
If I understand correctly this one transforms a boy into a MIDI device. Does it allow you to control pitch through MIDI keyboard? If so, then you don't need pitch and Arduinoboy together?

2. Arduinoboy and PS/2 socket
Same idea. If you have a MIDI keyboard as input it seems to be more powerful than the keyboard (since it's musical instrument of a sort). Why would anybody have PS/2 socket as well?

And one more thing. I'm having hard times to find some nice worklogs or tutorials for internal arduinoboy. Concretely I'm a bit confused how do I stuff two pretty big MIDI sockets into a DMG. I saw people put them on the sides of the shell, but I think it requires trimming the PCB and relocating the pars. I'd really like to avoid that (but maybe I haven't got much of a choice here).

Thanks!

Never ordered from nonfinite but always wanted to check out their backlights. Hopefully they'll get back on track with customer service soon. It's quite a reputable seller as far as I know.

This is a project log of GBA SP inside the DMG shell. At some point it explains how to wire closed circuit headphone jack. You could use that. But headphone adapter is the easiest and most straightforward way smile also does not require shell modification (and SP is a bitch in terms of free space).

Mine is wired post-pot and doesn't do this at all (speaker is on when nothing is plugged in, off when something is).  Although I kept my mod internal (but used this: http://thursdaycustoms.bigcartel.com/product/dmg-audio) instead of wiring straight up to a raw 1/4" (or 1/8") jack.  If you did it externally, I think you just have to cut the speaker wire permanently and disable it?  Although I might be wrong.

Internal pro sound leaves the original headphone jack connection intact and I assume in this case the amp receives the signal and cuts off the speaker.

AFAIK the amp is responsible for disabling the speaker when headphone jack is popped in. Since prosound signal is taken directly from the pot (bypassing the amp) the speaker remains on.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm gonna do

I was thinking to remove the piece of PCB with the headphone jack with the single pro sound jack. Reasons: 1) saves space 2) the native jack is corroded 3) i don't need pre amped output anyway.

I just wonder is it safe to remove the whole thing?

What are the benefits of using GBA for chiptune? I think DMG definitely has more space (an options) for mods. Is it better sound? Screen?
