That's a good story, but I used to have a haunted GBA that kept telling me to kill people, kill people.
Thankfully, I dumped that creepy 'ol thing off at a goodwill in another town.

Good thing about your dead CGB is the lcd screen is probably good to go, so it would be good for front-lighting.
The rest of the parts will surely come in handy if or when you start to refurb / mod for profit.I find that people particularly love a well done CGB front-light mod.
I always do mine with a kitsch-bent front-light, internal pro-sound, upgraded speaker, nice shell color combo or new shell from lee_chan (ebay) and a custom, white sticker.
Of course I also like to sand down the i.r. cover for an extra touch, but that's my thing.Oh yeah, replacement solder iron tips can be found on ebay for around like $5 shipped for a set.
Generally with this kind of work, you spend a little to get the ball rolling, do good work and you won't regret it. :-)Ooh, good call on the ebay boards, looks like about 6 bucks shipped. I'm in the US. I'll need a new speaker and shell, as I cracked this one, so maybe 15 bucks to get it back up and running, and that'd probably eliminate whatever issue the existing board had pre-hulk-smash. A bit pricey, but I think still within the realm of what they'd cost otherwise, and it'd give me a bit more to play with. Might bite the bullet and go for it.
The tips are cheap, might source them locally until I get a temp controlled station. I like having nice tools, but it's about a hundred bucks for one of those. Considered I think I burned out this current tip in one shot, it might be worth it sooner rather than later.
I need to either get an ESR meter or figure out how to test caps on a board with a multimeter, I suspect that's the issue with the red light DMGs. I've seen others on eBay with the same issue, so if I can isolate the issue I might have some other victims.
I just got a few of those CGB motherboards from honest_gaming_unlimited on ebay and they are all immaculate, just like in the stock photo.
They also have LCD screens alone but for $16 I'd rather hunt down battered CGBs for them.
Have you had any luck with those red light only DMGs..?
Only tested a couple of them so far but all they need is a couple pieces of wire to connect to a new speaker and they're ready to go.

Re: Replace EMS GB USB Case? (4 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
is replacing the EMS GB USB case as simple as it sounds?
All i need to do is find and old GB cart shell, dremel out a slit for the USB, right?Just making sure. I couldn't find a guide online and I wasn't sure if the EMS board would fit in a normal GB shell.
If anyone has done this, do you have any tips?
Thanks!
I did it with a GBC clear cart.
Did a bit more sanding / dremmeling than I would've liked but hey, this cart is much sturdier and nicer looking than the flashcart's original shell.
No modification to the flashcart. Just modded shell swap.
As far as tips, just get an exacto, a dremmel tool, an empty cart and some time.
And don't rush.
I imagine Kirby's Tilt & Tumble's cart would be better clearance and it can be used in everything with that back corner notch that the clear color carts don't have.

I love bringing Game Boys back from the dead too.
CGBs are my current favorite since they are so easy to take apart, repair, mod, customize and reassemble.
It's the first GB I ever bought with my own money so there's a special sentimentality that goes into every one of them I bring back from the dead off of ebay.
This is the most fun hobby I've ever had and it's great that it basically pays for itself. :-)

"1 CGB - corroded terminals (fixed), booted up and works! Yay, just need to fix the broken speaker."
---> Best replacement speakers I have ever used are NDS/GBA-SP or DS Lite ones. The DS Lite ones are the loudest and clearest of those on a CGB above mentioned speakers alone can be obtained cheaply from ebay, around $3 or so and usually in a set of 2 which is cool.

"1 CGB - No signs of life, even after terminal cleaning. I suspect a bad switch, but unfortunately the one tri-wing screw in the battery compartment will not come out. It spins freely, but I can't remove it. I've tried prying at it, gluing a screwdriver to it (superglue didn't hold), my smallest pliers are still too large, I just can't get it out. Any ideas?"
---> Oh yes, dirty power switch. Try using an old toothbrush with a little rubbing / isopropyl alcohol, blow in the exposed section, move switch to opposite side, blow out that side too. Compressed air works well with this method as well. Some motion after it dries and it should be good to go. :-)
Now to get at the switch with that apparent broken off internal hinge, I would recommend pulling the back shell away from the front and have someone use that tri-wing on the screw while you're doing that.
Other than that you may have to just rip it right off, but since beater GBC shells are probably going to start piling up somewhere (it comes with the hobby), shouldn't be a big loss. Especially after cooler, new replacement shells can now also be had from online in way cool colors like smoke black and clear neon orange.
Great questions.
Oh and welcome to Game Boy refurbishing. It can become addicting! :-)

Topic: Opinions on Internal Pro-Sound modded CGB (4 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Hello! Just wanted to get some personal opinions on this particular internal pro-sound mod as there is not much info or discussion concerning it online outside the great tutorial by "Capcomposer".
I have done a few Game Boy Colors. I like the ease of the mod, clarity of the sound and the absence of the underlying "humming" sound (hard to go back to that now, haha), but not digging the lowered volume through a headset so much.
So far my personal CGB, which was brought back from the dead off of ebay ($9) features a 101 kitsch-bent front-light, glass screen lens, dandelion front shell, lime green back shell, internal pro-sound mod and an NDS/GBA-SP speaker (kept the original buttons 'cause I like the rounded corners of them better).
I can live with the lowered volume I suppose, but what do you guys think about the internal pro-sound mod.....?

Ok. I was asking because he never said to remove all that, Just peel it on the side facing the screen. If it won't cause problems to remove it while doing the LOCA, then putting it back later (I don't know if the adhesive will restick after removal, or how it attaches to the panel) that seems best to me for decades more use.
The only things that need be removed in order to bond are the clear protective sheet and the reflective tape off the back of the panel.
Everything else can or should stay in place.
(I used a stripped down panel alone (w/o the led strip / wires cause that's all I had available for that particular photo op. I will try and get around to updating the photos with a complete unit to reduce further confusion.)
I recommend the reflective tape be placed on the front along the bottom (after curing) to cover the light bleed through the shell. The 5 leds will be visible through the shell case in a darkened location, even an opaque shell.
Again, the led strip can be replaced with a couple of dabs of superglue or another, effective adhesive, up to the end-user's discretion.

Re: Game Boy Color: Kitsch-bent front-light mod (63 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Probably a dumb question, but would you be able to replace the LED strip/module thingy after attaching the panel?
Oh yes, the led strip with wires can be removed and re-attached / replaced anytime as the loca doesn't (should not) reach that far down.
Removing it initially is easy enough (with gentleness and care of course).
After replacing it, I would recommend tiny dabs of super glue on the 2 ends.
Yes, it is viable to remove and re-install with a new led and wire strip, should the need arise in the unforeseeable future.

If anyone tries it using solar curing please share your experience.
I have tried (started with actually) solar curing on the inside of a window sill with a handful of different units, and in my personal experience, It works great as a curing method.
Same (if not better) strength of bond albeit a noticeably longer curing time required. The only reason I don't do it now is because I have mostly a night schedule lately and so the curing lamp helps and I got tired of cloudy days, crappy weather and such.
But yes, it works great!

i would also like to commission you to install one of those.
PM me the specifics you have in mind outside the front-light method and I'll see what I can do, or if you have a unit you would like to send to me for such commission.

Re: Game Boy Color: Kitsch-bent front-light mod (63 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
This is very relevant to my interests(job). When the Loca cures does it actually glue the front-light to the LCD or would it just pull right up? I'm very fond of the SP method(except for the fact that I'm using an SP) because I install them horizontally after I cut the panels and it always looks great. It's difficult to see from the pictures but do you think this would be better than a top notch SP front-light install?
When the loca cures, it is "permanently bonded".
It is on there pretty damn well, especially with the higher quality loca, like Osaka.
I've used the typical stuff in a red tube and there's a noticeable difference in the bond.
The manufacturer's descriptions online say not to try removing thing's you've bonded with loca to an lcd screen and I have to agree, it's typically that strong.
"Better" would be an objective opinion to the end-user, but from my personal experience, I'm of the opinion that the horizontal, corrected positioning is the clearest method, however I have since lost interest in using that method for commission / resale front-lit CGBs due to the pros of the "101" / kitsch-loca method.
Let's say that it is very nice to have a personal collection of each of the main mods:
The standard SP mod, the corrected and this new one.
In my personal collection, I have those three in addition to a red led front-lit cgb (which I called "virtual boy color", an SP light panel front-lit loca'd with a white, dmg back-light panel (like mentioned before, clearer and brighter, but with faint pillars of light).
I've tried lots of light panels. NDS, DS Lite, DSi and such in my ongoing experiments, with mixed and mostly disappointing results.

Re: Game Boy Color: Kitsch-bent front-light mod (63 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
It looks good on pictures but I wonder how clear is the image compared to a horizontal GBA SP frontlight mod: http://www.mylkstuff.com/page87.htm
The corrected orientation SP method is cleaner and slightly clearer while removing that horrid glare, but as much trouble as it is, not sure it justifies going through all that trouble unless to resell for a good profit.
An easier method I have done that was worth the trouble is a correct orientation, loca'd sp front-light, lit with a 4 led light panel strip from a dmg/mgb back-light kit.
Save for the faint pillars of light (which can be minimized by wrappinf the led strip with some of that white, milky back-light sheet (forget what it's called)), it is easier to do, less muss, less fuss, maybe a little more expensive, but, clearer without the fear of that dreaded, singular led which seem to be going out more and more as time wears them out. (or accidentally if you happen to be more rough with it than a newborn)
(great time to snag that now about useless sp (with the light that went out, (see ebay)) for that light panel which is still a delicacy among modders and ebay resellers!)
(lots of those guys suck at modding though and it shows...haha)
Good question though!
