Here is a list of things I should be doing:

1. Make threads on this forum and 8bc when you come out with releases
2. Show your work to your friends if you think they would care/you aren't embarassed
3. Upload links to your releases on music databases
4. Having your music out on a well-established label/netlabel helps, as they have fairly regular clientele, and may help you with promotion
5. Print physical copies of your albums or demos, play shows, and hand your stuff out
6. Have a strong enough web presence without getting overbearing
7. Try to get your releases on music blogs and podcasts
8. Write good music, and don't be a dingus

by releases you mean, when i post a song?

Become a respected member of the community and realise that this is a forum and not a marketing tool? How about engaging in discussion where the end goals sole purpose isn't to increase your listener ship?

I think you're already off on the wrong foot. Your post just screams "How do I exploit this place to increase my fan base?"

Also I wanted to make a second point, in an effort to clarify some of the more bitter sentiments in this thread. When you're just starting out in any craft, be it music in general, a new kind of music, or even a new tracker, you suck. Know that you suck. Spend a long time practicing, and maybe show your stuff to someone nearby if they're interested, but don't throw everything you make out onto the internet. Be patient, and you will thank yourself later on.

The best thing that ever happened to me as a musician was when I submitted a demo to a certain netlabel, and they sent me back a message that essentially broke down why everything I did was garbage. It motivated me to try harder, and it really opened my eyes to the fact that maybe 20% of what anyone writes is worth keeping.
