I do all of my composing and recording using the BGB emulator. Being able to save multiple states makes it easy to try out and quickly undo new ideas. I think the sound quality for recording is good, and you don't have to deal with noise from loose connections or hardware hum. I only break out the DMG for live performances.

If something is produced on chiptune hardware, but doesn't sound like chiptune and you don't tell anyone what you made it on, is it still chiptune?

If a GameBoy bleeps in an empty forest, is that chiptune?

I agree that listening to exclusively chiptune can get a little tiring, especially if (like me) you're not super into EDM. Here are a few tracks I've been listening to that incorporate chiptune elements:

I know I'm a little late to this thread, but this slap sound is perfect. Thanks for sharing! I'm using it in this work in progress (starting around 2:15).

Only tweak I made was a transpose value of 07 in the table to make it a perfect 5th. I also found that using an occasional R01 command gives you that rapid slap/pop sound bass players sometimes use.

Here's a vid of just the slap bass section:

LSDJ programming for a Gameboy/Guitar/Vocals chiprock EP as Boy Meets Robot. WIPs here: https://soundcloud.com/boymeetsrobot/se … n-progress

Also, changing lots of diapers.

That's really good. I like how you took a fairly repetitive song, and gave enough variation to each verse to keep it interesting. Very impressive use of echo and chorus type effects in LSDJ (unless those were added in post). Would love to look at the LDSJ.SAV file if you feel like sharing.

Good stuff! I enjoyed the variety of timbres and textures you created. The build up at the beginning is nice, but for my taste, it takes a little too long to get to the melody at 1:04. Also, I think the ending is a little abrupt. I might prefer a more gradually fade out to mirror the intro.

Would love to check out the LSDJ.SAV if you ever feel like sharing that.

Keep 'em coming smile

If you're really serious about distributing an album, I would look into having it professionally mastered and let the audio engineer take care of those things. It makes a big difference, and I'm sure you can find some recommendations here for people who would do it for not too much money.

Tim Follin for the win! Thanks everyone for sharing!

Here's what I came up with:

What do you think?

Back when I was playing a lot of SC2, my wife found me sleepwalking in the closet one night. When she asked what I was doing, I told her I was looking for the battlecruisers. That was without any pot.

In answer to your question, I think no more than half of a marijuana before playing to calm the nerves.

Also, since I think this is a chipmusic site, I'll post this:

Danimal Cannon's TED talk convinced me to try LSDJ instead of just using VSTs in a DAW. Also, he can really shred!

Looking for some inspiration to add a chip "guitar" solo to this track.

Share your your favorite solos below.

Mine is from Silver Surfer (solo starts at about 1:00):

Found the problem, gambatte isnt compatible anymore it seems. Able to save in KiGB

I had the same issue on my Mac. You might want to check your tuning when running KiGB. For me it was playing back about 40 cents flat.

I've found BGB to work better, if you're able to get Wine to work:

Glad you guys like! Might be a while before I have time to do a recording session for the guitar/vocals, but I'll definitely share when I do.

A lot of chip + guitar stuff I've heard tends to have the guitar just sounding like some sort of background noise that distracts from the chiptune elements without being audibly present enough to justify being included in the track. At least in my opinion. Beware of that.

Good suggestion! I try to keep the chiptune stuff out of the range of the guitar (mostly higher pulse channels and lower WAV channel), but it's hard to hear before putting it all together.

After making a bunch of cover songs, I decided to start working on some originals. Here's the LSDJ track to the first tune I've finished writing:

Love in the Singularity

I'm pretty happy with it, but thought I'd share here to see if anyone has suggestions before I add guitar and vocals.

Thanks!

I thought the opening was a bit heavy handed, but I like the groove starting at about 0:30. Reminds me of some early Bit Shifter. The L and C commands you're using give the melody some good variety. I would definitely add a contrasting section; maybe expand on what you have at 1:20 using a different lead instrument?

Also, am I hearing correctly that you're not using the WAV channel? If so, I would think about moving the kicks to the WAV channel and using one of the pulse channels for some chords/arpeggios/counter-melodies/etc. to thicken the texture.

Good luck finishing!
