When it comes to being financially successful with chip music, I think 4mat has it right. You do as much as you can to broaden the appeal and pimp yourself to the masses.

That said, I think the techniques/hardware used to produce it are also important. Though I don't think they have much to do with making dough. Pushing that kind of stuff will confuse your average musically-ignorant person looking for tunes on the ole internet.

My personal views on Nintendocore are not something that I can just flippantly share with the world through a careless forum post. I will say, however, that many would consider me a moderate on the larger spectrum of Nintendocore opinion. Thank you.

Use reference tracks! Take a few tracks that you consider well mixed and drop them into your DAW session. Use a spectrum analyzer and switch back and forth between theirs and yours. Note the differences and change your mix accordingly. It's probably the closest thing to a 'miracle cure' you can find when it comes to mixing.

I wish I had known this in the past, cause when I look back on my releases they're all (technically) pretty terribly mixed

I would've put it a little nicer (ie 'gayfers'), but I have to agree with this man.

Here's a recent EP of mine. It has thematic consistency, but the music haphazardly borrows from 70's prog rock, shoegaze, and chillwave a bit. It may be in line with your tastes: http://jtholen.bandcamp.com/album/vainglory

I'm 25 years old. Born in February.

I used to assemble (soldering) wireless transmitters, but just landed a job doing stuff at a web hosting/design company. This is a big deal for a high school dropout. Because the former job paid next to nothing, I live in weird semi-poverty. Broken stuff stays broken.

Aside from my job, I serve somewhere in a chain of youth leaders at my church. We're going to Nicaragua this summer, so I'm pretty pumped about that. More recently I've been trying to get the youth/young adult band organized.

I live in a rural unincorporated Florida town called Homeland. We have a meat market, post office, gas station, and 75-100 homes. Horses poop in my yard and it takes forever to get anywhere. My neighbors are awesome though because they let us use their wifi.

The pipes behind one of the walls in our bathroom are messed up so we keep a basin in the sink. When it gets full we dump it into the toilet. People who know us go potty before visiting. Hahaha. Our A/C is also broken, which sucks where I live.

I drive a 1996 Plymouth Breeze that breaks every few months. Bought it for 800 and spent almost 5,000 in repairs over the past 3 years.

I've only been on one real date, and I've only kissed one girl. Virgin too. I'm picky.

I have like 6 circles of friends who live in surrounding areas and can't find any time to hang with any of them. sad

I can't tell people 'no' even though I'm overwhelmed. This causes me to shut down, so none of it ever gets finished. Here's my running to do list:

- Ship out remaining Vainglory CDs that people ordered back in September 2011. I already refunded most of the money.
- Sift through footage of my mom's family reunion and make a DVD presentation.
- Thing for C-Jeff.
- Clean my room.
- Finish making my darn games.

My sister is raaaaad. Magma and early Genesis are some of her favorite bands, so she always gets the prog nerds after her.

I think that's it.

EDIT: Wow, I sound like a baby. I need a Livejournal again.

Haha, cheers, it was me being impatient!
Loved it, but the background art and music were what really did it for me, a fullscreen version of this would be gorgeous on many different levels

Thanks! I'll probably put out a full screen version eventually. For now I'm doooone though.
Here's a downloadable version if people are having browser problems: http://jaytholen.net/youwillbe.zip

It's loading indefinitely so I'm sad. On chrome, am I just being impatient or is there a known bug??

Hmm, I'm using chrome too. Have you tried clicking in the game area? I don't know. sad

There isn't even an abortion in this game sheesh. And he can't die because he's baby Dropsy. Dropsy is in a game I'm releasing next year. Jerks.

Interesting little game. It reminded me of the parts in Sword and Sorcery when you use the book and find all the little specks of light.
That's probably a shitty explanation, but if you've played that game you'll know what I'm talking about.

I'll play whatever you churn out, brotha.

I JUST got that on steam. Gotta dig into it more. Thanks for playing. smile

So edgy, I know.

Annyyway, just re-posting from TIGS to spread the love:
Here's a small game I finished over the course of the last week. I'm trying to get a grip on MMF2's eccentricities when it comes it's flash runtime. Just wanted to experience the bugs on a small game before going any further on my bigger one. Surprisingly, there weren't that many.

I was also experimenting with generative music. A good 2/3 of the audio here is connected to something going on in the game.

PS - This isn't an anti-abortion game. Pleeassee don't turn it into that.
