LSDJ merch should be huge already, this is awesome, looks great. Get Johan on board for a cut (could he really be opposed to additional income?) and make this happen.

So a couple months ago I was approached by ThatAuthoringGroup because they wanted to put one of my tracks on the Rockband 3 DLC marketplace. Naturally I accepted, but I was very curious how they'd make the transition from Chipsounds to the "real" instruments of Rockband, here's the result:

Granted, this is on expert so they made it as hard as possible, but it certainly highlights the ability of chipmusic to create things that musically would hardly be feasible on real instruments. There seems to be a fair amount of conflict in the youtube comments regarding the impossibility of this on guitar as well.

Chipmusic in Rockband, Yea or Nay?

Any reason in particular you opted to take a picture of your computer screen to show the graphic?

This needs video coverage...like all the video coverage in the world.

This will be streaming at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/control-flow

Someone record and Youtube this for me!

It happens, but it's part of the character and gets covered up relatively well in a mix.

1. Chiptune is NOT a genre, it's a medium for creating music in a range of styles. Stop calling it a genre.

I don't think you should pose that as an undisputed fact. I disagree that it isn't a genre or in many aspects a style of its own. That's not the point though. The point is not to get too anal about it, and maybe to show some respect for those who disagree instead of just playing it off like you know best. It makes it look more like wishful thinking than anything.

Y'know, the amount this is coming up lately, we should have an international panel of artists come up with a creed or something to end dispute haha.

OK pretentious serious cap on for a second.

While Chiptune is to been seen as a synthesizer or instrument, NOT a genre...

Because of the uniqueness of the instrument and the way music is composed for it, I posit that there are chiptunes that defy modern classification and thus could be seen as their own genre that is exclusive to chiptune.

Thoughts?

I agree with you Danimal; Chiptunes also at a certain feel for each genre just because of the feel of the instrument.

I also feel as though the music for older game soundtracks have developed their own genre of music for their field and for lack of a better term sometimes that genre (which actually is a genre) is often referred to as chiptune. A couple of those old soundtracks are in a league of their own and deserve their own genre classification.

Also, there are a few genres chip has founded based on the sweeping arpeggios and complex patterns that are really only possible on an instrument like a gameboy/tracker.

I'd say reliability in data storage is a very important concern.

Agreed, but I just always hear about people losing all their data because of battery failures. I use EMS carts exclusively, and have NEVER lost data. I wouldn't leave anything important on my computer without a backup, and the same goes for my LSDJ songs. Data storage reliability is, in part, a human function.

I just back up my carts regularly, I've been going for a couple years and the batteries are still doing fine, but if you're super worried then just take up the tradition of replacing the batteries every 1 or 2 years.

damn:/ ill try someof the tips but my Gbc running LsdJ which i thought was way noisier is only loud as hell as long as it isn't playing, but then it shuts up which is quite awesome.. well, thx for the feedback anyway!

Yeah that's actually a battery saving feature of LSDJ believe it or not tongue It shuts off the processor when you're not playing music (which causes a hum).
