One or both of these names should be stolen for a New Zealand chip-related project. smile

it freezes up after a few seconds for me. i've uploaded the one i've got for you.

also you guys should check out the Fire Pro Wrestling OST for Wonderswan i upped!

http://latenightswithoutfriends.blogspot.com/

Wow, you're right! What on earth did I sample this from then?

Maybe I sampled it with the NSF from akumu's archive, but I could've sworn I made the switch to hcs64 already. Hrm! Anyways, you have a rad site with a great start! I had a similar blog, just for game music sampled to mp3, which you can check out here-
http://www.explod.org/

It hasn't been updated in forever so the last several entries probably have outdated links (as well as everything hosted on one of the two main ftps I used). Basically I made the switch to just uploading everything on youtube. You'll find much more up here, and most soundtracks have a download link in track 1 without broken links.
http://www.youtube.com/explod2A03

If there are any soundtracks there you like feel free to redistribute them. They should all be nicely tagged/ organized, and complete. smile Conversely, would it be cool if I uploaded some stuff you share on youtube? I've sampled literally everything myself thus far, but so long as someone else is also making the effort to carefully sample soundtracks in their entirety, I would love the help! I'd like to put that Wonderswan soundtrack up, for example. I'd of course link / whore out your blog and everything. Let me know if that's cool!

I think what you should have said, and would be more truthful is:

There are more respected members of the chip music community on this sit, then at 8bc.

And anyone that's not a 'respected member' gets ridiculed, disrespected, and doesn't get reasonable answers.

I completely agree with one thing Mono said, in James' thread. You guys are like a bunch of fucking high schoolers, in your own little 'clique'. Any outsiders, or anyone new gets shunned and not taken seriously. I'm not saying this about everyone, but I've noticed it from the fucking start. I guess you people who have been around longer like how small the scene is, and would like to keep it that way. Well hate to break it to you, but it's not going to stay that way forever, and you really should quit treating people like complete shit, and giving such absurd answers to posts like this. Just because you've been a part of the 'scene' for longer than everyone else, doesn't make you better than everyone else.

Not everyone is always nice to newcomers all the time, but this isn't a community that's out to ridicule the new guys. Far from it. Take another look around the forum, reconsider your rant... and chill. smile This is a great forum and it's very un-cliquey compared to lots of other internet communities. There are many great things that happen here! Why blow some trite negativity out of proportion?

I'm not sure I even understand what you have a problem with. I'm thinking the issues you've built up need some reassessing, because in the chip scene, people are always happy to see dedicated and talented newcomers. I'm saying this from a perspective that's familiar with 8static here in philly, and to a lesser extent, other chip shows in general. The whole "you're elitists and you want to keep the scene small" allegation is absurd and certainly speaks for almost no one here, let alone the community at large.

While it's relevant, I will share the cynicism I feel when I see certain chiptune artists / enthusiasts who can't distance themselves enough from video games. "I didn't get into this shit b/c of video games!" "Pokemon is diaper baby nonsense!". It's like, sure, all those gripes have their own validity, but that doesn't make them not silly (or completely embarrassing) to hear over and over. It's like, do we still need to be reminded of that disapproval? It starts to sound like a hang-up at a certain point...

Anyways, I just thought I'd point that out, at least for tacticalbread's sake and anyone else who may be confused. Any negativity here has everything to do with (somewhat justifiable) issues of relevance and a (less desirable) "I'm not here for games" mentality working in tandem. Don't fall victim to believing that 'the scene' actually has all these other weird issues you laid out, even if a poster or two somehow give you that impression.

Sorry if I may have opened a scab in the community.  I thought this ROM hack was a really interesting creation and figured General Discussion was the most appropriate section to put it in.

Maybe some of the posters in this thread didn't even click the link to realize what that the thread is about a ROM hack rather than Pokemon.

Edit:  Either way, I apologize.  If a mod wants to delete this to keep standards on CM I completely understand. smile

Seriously, don't sweat it! You seem like a respectful poster interested in making conversation. It's good to understand why a thread like this will likely be considered out of place and garner negative attention by some, but you have the right intentions. Perhaps it's worth reevaluating if talking about games...
A) Should happen in the General forum.
B) Should happen in a new / revised subforum.
C) Shouldn't happen at all.

I'd prefer A or B. It's not like game discussion is ruining the integrity of the general forum, or anything, but I could understand why someone might want it separated.

/tldr, and good post from bit shifter.

Ah yeah, Don usually puts it through a video mixer with something else when he uses it.

This doesn't help for sprites, but for text you could try scrollNES-

Oh! To add something relevant, I love the 'transition' animation from Taboo: The Sixth Sense. Skip to 2:30-

If only those cards weren't in the way! The colors also change if you press buttons, although you'd probably never know this without an emulator + save stating (since they change on their own to begin with and you wouldn't have a reference for what's different). I'm not sure how elaborate they made the interactivity... probably not very.

If any NES hackers / coders could take a look at this or try to recreate it, I'd love to see it. I can't really think of other classic NES games that had something that was totally VJ-worthy...

anyone want to elaborate what's wrong with the DS version?

I haven't used it in years, so it's very likely it has been improved since then. I don't recall all the issues I had with it, but I remember that having to squish the graphics to 256x192 was kind of a pain in the butt. The solution for this is that you have a squished screen and a 'zoomed' screen (that looks fine but you can't see the whole screen as a result and have to slide around). You can switch which screen is which easily on the fly.

I think they handled the resolution of the DS as best as they could, so it's not their fault or anything. smile It's just... not very likable. Between having these games on the go at anytime or having to wait and play on a better version of scummvm (on my PC at home), the latter was preferable. The DS version was by no means horrible or anything, though. I'm not necessarily even recommending against using it, others may be perfectly content with it.

Also, after some more poking around I can see that you can't play The Dig or Full Throttle without ram expansion in the GBA slot.

Yeah, I played around with it a bit as well and wasn't very fond of it*. The DS probably isn't the best platform for it, in-spite of how awesome touch-screen interactivity should be. With any luck the 3DS will get hacked and there'll be a nicer scummvm for that, further down the road...

*Edit: I played a little Beneath a Steel Sky on it. I couldn't get The Secret of Monkey Island working, as I recall.

Oh, turns out Game Music Box for OSX supports NSFE. That's great.

How hard is it to find this?

I'd rather have this than an American NES cart cut in half or something else kinda sloppy looking (I don't trust my own building skills). smile I never really hear much discussion on these.
