TOMORROW GENTS

OH btw for the hell of it I've decided to go ahead with a limited physical release - I'll hopefully have some ready to bring to Square Sounds Tokyo.

PM me if you're interested in snagging a copy - it'll help me ballpark how many CD's to print.

hey, just wanted to let everyone know that this thursday at 7pm PST there'll be a listening party for my upcoming album VARIOUS TOPICS:

Noise Channel Radio @ Arecibo Radio: http://www.areciboradio.com
facebook event page for those of you who like your medias social: https://www.facebook.com/events/5719534 … 586193554/
more Ubiktune release info: link
teaser track: https://soundcloud.com/ubiktune/bryface … ard-groove

relieved and excited to be releasing this, i've been working hard at making this release a worthwhile listen!  i'll be on IRC fielding questions and exchanging awkward internet words with anyone else who happens to be listening in.

VARIOUS CHAT TOPICZ:
- who am i and what am i doing here and why am i still alive
- what went behind a few of the tracks on this album
- upcoming projects/plans
- like what's an LSDJ album doing on ubiktune anyway, what's that all about
- AND OTHER THINGS

see you there!

two of my NES/famicom favourites:

- kirby's adventure - hands down some of the most expressive melodies and intricate rhythms/interplay:

- erika to satoru no yume bouken (check out those amazing N106/163 pads):

cover art of da year

at least link to the video/swf dudeski!

just wanna say kudos to the clipstream team for keeping it real and having a consistent monthly show!  i can't imagine it's easy to round up and manage a lineup every month, especially with the high risk of technical difficulties that come with streaming.

'TIS A GOOD THING

oh, so like a quick rundown is what you need then?

ON THE PREVIOUS EPISODE OF CHIP SOMETHING SOMETHING

- quite a few "big" shows that already happened or are pending: BRKfest, superbyte, toy company fest, ultrachip, eindbaas, square sounds
- seems like more of the chip community activity is moving more and more towards twitter/tumblr/facebook/eHarmony
- a couple of "mainstream" crossovers/exposure: anamanabananarama on jimmy fallon, disasterpeace getting more notoriety,
- chibi-tech's legendary drop
- the advent of webshows streamed from home.  the community of streamers seems to still be figuring out a format that works.
- a lot more artists seem to be doing more projects for indie games - hearing a lot more about soundtracks and stuff.
- quite a few artists that didn't release much in 2012 are coming out with new releases in 2013

GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF NOTE
- new york is in a holding pattern but keeping steady with pulsewave / io
- philly has been amping it up this year, trying to set up 8static festival and inviting talent from surrounding regions
- pacific northwest has tried to get some bigger shows going but hasn't been able to round up enough collective support for it yet, internal struggles i hear.  "regular" shows in seattle and portland have still been happening though on what seems like a bi-monthly or quarterly basis
- california is trying to get something consistent together but i hear the challenge is geography and being mega spaced out
- the mongolian scene is still as dead as ever

STUFF TO LOOK FORWARD TO
- the need is still apparent for a trusted somebody (or a group of people) to help curate / round up the goings-on in the chip scene
- there's no clear choice for an "ultimate chiptune site" yet (not even sure if there's a need though)
- more interest in piggy, FM, and combined-chip songs as tools and tech improve
- there is some groundwork development that might just lead towards some kind of web API for editing LSDJ tracks in the cloud

as far as answering your original topic question, i still totally like chiptune, just not the overly simplistic stuff that constitutes the "average" chiptune as perceived by the casually-listening public.  plenty of innovative stuff still being made these days.

elaborate, man!

i have a few madman theories kicking around, related to oversaturation, commercialization, the lowering of the bar of quality, the void left by blip, and the desire to simplify community structures.  but you've been kicking around this scene longer than i have so any conjectures i have will probably seem kinda silly by comparison.

YOU GUESSED RIGHT

i might actually pick one up though.  my 3ds' headphone jack crapped out a little bit, so i'm in need of an inexpensive replacement.

and i always felt kinda silly and apprehensive holding a DS whenever i performed with it live because the top lid always flopped around kinda fragiley.  (one other thing, i also felt kind of silly jumping around with a game system like an asshole, i mean anybody know what that's about?)

this is teh rad.  some super nice work jmr!
