hey everybody -

i'm really excited to send out this newsletter in particular, these might be my favorite product so far:  full silicone buttons for DMG!

http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/silicone-buttons

these parts replace the factory-installed silicone+plastic buttons in the original console.  they feel great to use, and have a wonderful tactile feeling,

best part is, they are only $3 for a full set!  had 8 solid colors and clear sets made this batch,

enjoy, and keep chipping!

thanks for looking!

i tend to focus on groove and rhythm in one/two patterns first, and then fan out.  but i've found that makes my songs somewhat lacking in chord progression (for better or worse).

lately i've experimented with laying out a "stream of consciousness" of chord movements - like, bust out the chords linearly in an almost freestyle manner, and not worrying about the overall texture until later.

either way, before all that happens i start by imagining the emotional effect i want to achieve, and then just sit there for a couple of minutes and imagine ways to make it happen.  if i'm lucky, my mind can formulate the various elements to achieve the desired effect - not entire melodies mind you, but pieces of hooks and chunks of rhythmic features.  the harder part is to string it all together into something more cohesive.

hell yes.  glad to see this project is picking up more steam!  the scene needs more and better curation and this will definitely help.

i was actually considering getting the usbmix, but i've had people express concern to me that pretty much all devices that act as both an interface and a mixer end up doing a poor job at either.  nice to know that it's at good enough for general use.

i just wish they had a version with double the inputs.  i'd be all over that for sure.

again, i'd recommend that you grab the LSDJ rom, the gameyob emulator, and a DS flash cart that supports gameyob.  these 3 components are the absolute minimum for your needs.  it's hardly the most purist solution, but it'll get you started, and the sound reproduction is "good enough" in my opinion.  (i have a feeling the sound accuracy will only improve over time.)

once you feel motivated enough to get more familiar with the legit hardware, it's up to you to decide on picking up a game boy and a relevant GB flash cart - just don't be surprised if/when all your existing songs don't play correctly on the DMG because you wrote them on a DS with inaccurate emulation.

and to answer your question about DS-native trackers:  there's NitroTracker, but it's quite limited in the control of the sound (effect commands don't really work), and the interface is too clunky to be significantly productive.

You can get Lameboy DS here: http://lameboy.nutki.com/

But you should probably try Gameyob instead: http://gbatemp.net/threads/gameyob-a-ga … ds.343407/

woah, this caught my attention just now as i'm acutely aware of lameboy's shortcomings, but i haven't heard of gameyob -- so i gave it a whirl just now.

the good news is that sound reproduction indeed is way better on gameyob overall.  i'd say it's currently about 85% of the way there in terms of accurate sound reproduction.  whereas lameboy made WAV channel samples grainy and garbled beyond recognition, gameyob plays back samples MUCH clearer, i'd say on par with a GB color i guess.

the bad news is that is the noise channel still needs some tweaking.  some of the noise instruments in the songs of mine that i tried out sounded a little too loud or "bright".  although, the overall noise channel sounded quite good otherwise.

bottom line for OP:  if you absolutely must get LSDJ on a DS form factor, gameyob is your best bet.  although i'd question one's productivity with a DS lite anyhow, given the tiny and awkward start/select button placement... also, if you're going to emulate it at any rate, why not just do so with a better emulator on your computer?

see also if you guys can do something about the "8bit" in the name

IT'S PRETTY GOOD

in the past i got used to calling everyone fredface, joanface, et cetera.  that's pretty much it.
also, the prospect of being "known" by the stupidest name possible is still pretty hilarious to me.

i also like the idea that i don't need to reinforce a particular persona, or evoke any imagery that i don't want to, through my alias.  i'm just a guy that does music sometimes.

costs 3,000 yen according to this which amounts to about $30 USD.  the cartridge version of the M01 used to cost close to $100 USD so it's quite a large price drop in comparison.

in japan a few weeks ago i met up with Sano and it sounded like the "slow approval process" would require one to expect it closer to the end of the year.  Nintendo might surprise us though.

I will say that the interest in and support of the M01D's eShop release will be important, because it would dovetail into another upcoming eShop-related project from Detune that i think is pretty exciting.  i can't say much about it at the moment but i do believe a lot of people will be pleased by it.

also, here's a tune i jammed out on the original M01 not too long ago, to provide a sense of a more sadistic compositional approach.  if you embrace the cheeziness as a product of a SNES / FM aesthetic, then i think the M01[D] is capable of songs that contain a certain 16-bit charm:
