Would be cool if you could color the tree and leaves.
Then it would look nice.
A real clear GBC (Japanese) would be awesome, then you also could paint it from the inside.

I have been contemplating filling the engraving with ink or some such, but don't have the supplies to try it yet. I'll try it some time soon.

I have been away from CMO for a pretty long time, partly because I felt I didn't have that much to contribute to the community. I have been lurking for the past couple of months though, and I think I'm ready to share something which may be of interest.

I do laser engraving now, I have a small business doing this kind of thing. And as typically happens when you have a laser, I occasionally feel compelled to put random personal possessions into the laser to make them look different. Today it happened to be this yellow Gameboy Color. It's not in the best shape, I picked the most beat up one I had for this experiment in case everything went horribly wrong. Well, it did not go horribly wrong, it actually turned out beautifully.

The camera doesn't quite do the engraving justice. The plastic that has been struck by the laser is a slightly lighter shade, and the texture is smooth and quite appealing in the hand. I engraved the whole face plate without removing the screen protector because I thought it would rock to have the engraving run all over the face of the GBC. I have another GBC in clear-purple which I could try this again with a different pattern, and if any of you have ideas for what to do to that one, please comment and let me know what you think. smile

EDIT: You can find more information about my process and see the design sketches here: http://weaselsgonarf.blogspot.com/2013/ … color.html

Now if y'all really wanted to be guilty you'd be saying stuff like "I eat Nutella on Doritos."

From the eBay listing:

"The Multari is a portable Atari 2600 with 32 built-in games.
It features a vacuum-formed styrene plastic case, 5" LCD, and no big cartridges to carry around.

This is a portable based off the Atari Flashback 2. It was modded to be able to use game cartridges, then a custom chip with the 32 built in games. The case is vacuum formed. This means the plastic was heated and suctioned over a mold, then it was cut out and used as the case."

And later on it says "Uses an EEPROM to boot the games"

This, coupled with the pictures of the guts of the system, indicate to me that there is no way to use a cartridge with it, to change the games you would need to reprogram the EEPROM.

I found an SNES for $3 one time. And a Dreamcast with all the goodies for $5, but it had a dead laser.

Yeah I know 512 mb sux. I got it for like 12 bucks. I traded my friend a large pizza for it. I should prob buy some RAM. The model is X41 btw.

EDIT: I tried Paint.NET on it. I only monkey'd with it for 30 mins. Didn't get much slow down.

Oh, that that's a totes awesome way to get a computer bro. wink Some of my favorite old machines have been aquired in this fashion.

Oh, and it doesn't have a cartridge port. Bummer.

If you want to go nuts, try out MyPaint. It's really quite nice IMO, although not exactly the thing for pixel art. But it does OK for me. Here is something I made with it:

http://mypaint.intilinux.com/

I have run it on an IBM Thinkpad T22 which IIRC is even more weaksauce than your machine, and it did OK.

When in doubt, use less concentrated hydrogen peroxide. My approach was to use the really weak stuff from Walgreens and mix it with more water, and just put in a scoop of oxi clean and stir, and leave the parts in a bath while out in the sun. It produced more even results for me at the cost of requiring far more exposure time. I did it to a few of the parts of my Apple IIgs with no ill effects.

Also, who the heck puts wax inside gameboy carts? Unless you had it in your ear, I don't think that's wax bro...

Done. smile

If someone has a busted set of DMG internals for me to experiment with, I could try to make something on my laser cutter...

I work with an organization that helps pregnant moms in low-income or dangerous situations. We help them find safe places to stay if they have an abusive husband/boyfriend, or help them pay for things like STD testing, rent assistance, baby stuff, etc.

I haven't tested it yet because my famicom has been acting really strange and I want to get that fixed first.

Of course, as with any piece of electronic equipment, if you wanted to go really crazy you could do the following things to remove noise, but they're all overkill and might not work:

- Use a higher quality PSU to remove line noise from your DC power supply.
- Trace the audio route and add shielding to the circuits.

Of course, this amount of work is pretty crazy for the tiny gains you might actually see.
