Let's play a game.

Count how many of the items in CDK's collection you own, and post the number here.

I'll go first.

Totally hear you and totally agree re: all the gripes about the venue. In a nutshell — every venue involves some degree of compromise. Eyebeam, for instance, was wonderful on the surface, but not being a traditional live-music venue (it's ordinarily an art gallery), it also fell to us to do things like rent / load in / assemble a stage; rent / load in a soundsystem; run a bar from scratch (i.e. sourcing and transporting the alcohol; enlisting bar staff; etc.); pay for a security team; and so forth. For what is generally a three- to six-person team, that's a lot of coordination and labor on top of simply organizing the event. Compromises at the Gramercy Theatre were a little more visible (i.e. absurd bar prices), and we recognize that, but sadly a lot of these details were out of our direct control and, in essence, came with the package. As ever, we did the best we could with what options were available, but sadly the bar prices remained exorbitant and there seemed to have been a bit of a learning curve with the sound. I hope everyone was able to see through the blemishes enough to enjoy themselves regardless, and as ever, thanks to everyone who came out, whether from near or far, and danced / raged / crowdsurfed despite the surly staff and laughable drink prices.

That was a real nice time.

Also, I'm lazy.

This from the guy who did a song a day for 365 days while also completing a PhD program.

Step it up, Tomczak.

To each one's own. I think the tradition of an artist doing a rendition of another artist's song is one with a pretty rich and far-reaching history. And like anything, it's possible to do it tastefully and well, and it's possible to do it poorly, crassly, or disingenuously. Instrumentation has nothing to do with that. I think a "welcome to chipmusic; covers prohibited" attitude is silly and shortsighted.

They're probably out protesting the new legislation illegalizing assembly and dissent or whatever bullshit it is that's out-America-ing America right now.

When I was told what they were protesting against I didn't exactly agree. It was a sight though.

Apparently collegiate education is free-ish with high taxes, and while basic education is a right, advanced education I'm not so sure about.  I probably got a shitty gist of it though

Yeah my understanding of what's going on up there is pretty minimal -- one article I read (OK skimmed) framed it as assembly for the purposes of protest as having now been deemed illegal, but I have no idea how skewed / exaggerated a viewpoint that was and I totally do not have the full picture.

15%-20%.

I don't think covers are the intrinsic problem. If I'm in a rock band and we decide to cover a song we like by an artist we like, out of a genuine appreciation for the song and an interest in "trying it on," we'll do it for those reasons. And, if we have any talent / ability and we're lucky, maybe we'll even succeed at creating a unique reinterpretation that respects the original without being a straight clone of it. Swap out the guitars & drums (or whatever) for chipmusic gear and I don't see anything changing that equation.

Not at all, I think this is a great idea. Sadly don't know much about temporary phone/data options. I'm sure temporary SIM card options must exist for GSM phones. And barring that I know of other visiting friends who've straight-up bought cheapo temporary cellphones at the Duane Reade drugstore chain. Might be worth sticking your head into any of the numerous T-Mobile / AT&T shops to see what options may exist.
