Sigh...To each his own...this thread's about sounds you love/hate...I'm not a fan of chipjazz...I guess I more mean the progression of it rather than the actual sounds themselves...I'm not saying it doesnt take talent and im sure tons of people who write it are MUCH better than I am at writing music. And that's that.

corny sounds used in chip music? holy crap
I'll rephrase: Cool:Corny ratio is like 1:12 which Is definitely a worse ratio than most of the GOOD chipmusic out there.

Yeah I've heard some chip-jazz and it's just weird. Plus a lot of the sounds used just sound so corny. I will say though...Kool Skull's "Tubular Jazz" is a completely different story...and it's a fucking cool one at that.

Claps...I know heavily distorted claps make really awesome sounds...but just regular old fleshy hand claps can ruin a song for me.

Really nice stuff, guys. Since I'm fairly new to electronic (metalhead all my life ) there's tons of stuff I'm going to check into.
I'll also Add Megadeth, Rush, Nevermore, King Crimson and Dinosaur Jr. to my two I posted above (didn't realize the thread would take off like this!)
My father was actually pretty good friends with Marty Friedman (guitarist in easily my favorite time period of Megadeth's career) and even though my dad at the time really wasn't that good of a guitarist at all, they'd still jam around. I always thought that was really neat. His guitar work is very different than many other metal/rock guitarist in that he made his melodies in a string of 5 or 7 notes rather than the traditional 3 or 4.
Rush's song structures are just so tits and I think a lot can be said about them considering many of their older songs sound very similar to other progressive and hair metal bands even at the time, but with a lot more variation, skill and musicianship which makes them sound almost completely different. I know that's an oxymoron but I hope others pick up what I'm putting down.
Jeff Loomis from Nevermore Is one of the best guitarist to ever live...In any genre (note I said "one of") and his technical style is fucking ridiculous. A lot of metal musicians use the harmonic minor like they're stocking up potatoes during the Irish Potato Famine, but his stuff sounds unique in comparison and that's really refreshing.
King Crimson is just great. Everything is weird and crazy and unique. I can't even remember how many times I listened to "Three of a Perfect Pair" on a loop when I was a kid.
I love Dinosaur Jr's noise and how it didn't/doesn't sound like a bunch of llamas grazing on the band's equipment while it's at full volume like many of the other bands of their style. Their stuff is catchy without being the retarded-mindless-uncreative kind of catchy. Plus J Mascis's voice is interesting and cool.
...You guys got some good shit...I fucking love reading posts like these...write a damn novel in here and I'll be like a kid in a candy store!

Topic: Music Influences (57 replies, posted in General Discussion)
So I figured this would be an interesting point of discussion. I think a thread about non-chip related music influences in our own chipmusic would be fun and enlightening...plus who doesn't like to gab about the music they're into, right?
I'll start with just two:
Glitch Mob and Opeth
For both (even though one is electronic and the other progressive death metal) I love the unique sounds, Interesting rhythms and the feeling that the progression of the song could change radically at any moment. Especially in Opeth, following a chord or melody progression say in 4/4 time, instead of the fourth phrase repeating the previous three or being only slightly different, the song completely throws you off guard by changing it radically while still actually fitting with the feel of the song overall. Also in regards to Opeth, the complex melodies and dissonant sounds that wouldn't fit at ALL in other songs really makes me appreciate his music composition. His sad, meaningful, and poetic lyrics (that aren't in the least corny unlike many "melancholy" songs) also are a huge interest of mine.
Example:
Opeth, The Drapery Falls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4
The first two verses have the same exact feel and melody, but the second one at the very end throws you for a loop when he unexpectedly cuts it off to sing something different (2:17-4:30)
