i think in order to expand the possibility of chip shows in philly, just as it needs to be all places, artists just need to do a lot of playing out with NON-chip acts at other venues.

Nailed it! I don't think Chromelodeon ever did a single chip show, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, Cheap Dinosaurs is now mainly doing chip shows. We've realized this and are going to be stepping our shit up. smile

Finding venues can be tricky. We really ought to be playing at Kung Fu Necktie and Johnny Brenda's and the like...

kung fu necktie is a rad place. and yeah, you cheap dinos have such awesome crossover potential/musicianship/songwriting/badass that it would be a really strong entrance point to the chip scene for an uninitiated local. same goes for animal style and mister jon baken. both glad and not at all surprised that you fellas have the right idea. wink

anamanaguchi is playing at the knitting factory on june 8th!
nullsleep/starscream/knife city are playing at webster hall on june 11th!

as for places to stay, i remember the blip threads on 8bc had some good hostel info. worth looking through!

just to throw my two cents in here:

i think in order to expand the possibility of chip shows in philly, just as it needs to be all places, artists just need to do a lot of playing out with NON-chip acts at other venues. there needs to be strong involvement in the local scene in order to raise awareness of the smaller chip scene. philly has such awesome artists with so much crossover potential that it shouldn't be a problem with them getting on other bills. once people see how dope these artists are, that encourages an interest in the whole scene, and in coming to strictly chip shows.
really, it just comes down to the philly artists themselves wanting to put their names out there, same as it does in new york, or anywhere trying to expand their scene. 8static is still a relatively new event (only been going on for about 17 months, right?), there's still plenty of time for progress. so if you're making tunes in philly and want more people to come to chip shows, then play out! start a discussion! otherwise 8static is just a bunch of flyers! people need to see first hand how seriously awesome it is!

nickelodeon is a pretty big station, right? sucks that they want to use mark denardo to rope people into thinking that 8-bit stuff is cool.

Not to mention that fucking game based on a MICHEAL CERA MOVIE.

i know man, i can't believe how hard we sold out. but this is it! they're USING us to trick people into thinking 8-bit is the next big thing!
right?

hold on, one second. sorry, i just need to light this diamond-encrusted cigar using a flaming copy of action comics #1.

Well, it was bound to happen some day. The big media moguls are bound to realise there might actually be some money in the chipmusic scene, and they're trying to bridge the gap. See, the scene as it is now doesn't produce alot of money. But get the mainstream sheep interested in chip style stuff as the next breakthrough genre and viola; a new cash cow. They have done it with countless genres. Guess who's next?

....

So, keep it indie folks. Have a nice night!

a) what happened to "chip music is not a genre"? saying they'll exploit chip sounds to cash in is pretty goofy.

b) are you also upset that these videos are getting any attention at all? would you rather that people who make good videos and music using an aesthetic that you enjoy wouldn't get written up in a widely-read, albeit "big media" publication? "keeping it indie" is good and all, but there's no point in producing superb material if you don't care about expanding your audience. whether or not they're corporately owned, i'd say the odds are strong that someone who reads wired magazine will have an interest in 8-bit art.
