Re: How are soundfonts different to samplepacks in LGPT? (9 replies, posted in LittleGPTracker)
yeah saskrotch hit the nail on the head
the main advantage is that a different sample can be mapped to each note, or to arbitrary ranges of notes-- similar to what most rompling keyboards do. basic volume/pitch envelope stuff can also be done with it -- some of the 808 sounds in the microsoft set (the kick and the tom at least) are just made from sine waves with pitch envelopes, and i think it can also play back more than one sample per note.
i don't know how many of these features will be supported in piggy
the best editor is, i think, viena: http://www.synthfont.com/Viena_news.html
the main application in piggy (which generally produces artificial-sounding music anyway) will probably be drum kits - but putting them together might be more hassle than it is worth. the microsoft GS set (GM.DLS) has 808 and 909 kits in it plus a few others that you can use if you convert it to sf2

Re: [howto] using Renoise with LSDJ to some extent (6 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
"You can't simply send notes or pattern effects etc. to LSDJ and expect it to know what to do with them. That means you won't be able to control, say, instruments you set up in LSDJ with Renoise."
isn't this possible (sort of) with the lsdj keyboard interface?
edit: good article in general though! not really criticsing, just wondering..

Re: 2013 - Dare To Not Release Music Year (103 replies, posted in General Discussion)
i'll say words at you in irc instead of here
here i'll just say (to chipland in general) that you don't need to shoot down everyone with slightly idiosyncratic or even (dare i say it?) NEGATIVE opinions
a lot of people here complain about the "circle-jerk"ing in a vague way, but when people like (for example) 4mat or zanzan offer more specific criticisms, or personal opinions about areas of the scene that people are involved in, people start to take offense
if you don't want to be a circle jerker, your options are:
- say nice things about the things you like, but temper it with saying HONEST things about the things you dislike (but if the honest things are just about newbies or people we all hate anyway, this is actually MORE circle jerky) and offering criticism where you feel you have something to say
- have no opinions. discuss GB transfer software and trade hardware only.
- have no opinions. share pictures of desktop backgrounds and gameboy in mouth only. (let's not make 2013 gameboy in mouth year)
p.s. every "stop liking what i don't like" can be countered with a "stop disliking what i like". it's all about where you interpret stuff as falling on the Personal Opinion -> Friendly Advice -> Direct Orders continuum. which is not easy to do over such a slow-motion and impersonal communication medium as a forum.
