M3rck AND monotonik are defunct now, anyways...
;_; i still have hope for monotonik...
they're on "permanent?" hiatus. That question mark is a tiny beacon of hope.

I don't have much to say about the compos themselves, other than that if you want to do one I highly recommend using http://compo.thasauce.net/
I've entered compos using that site before and it's usually been quite smooth. The deadlines, uploads, cutoffs and voting are all handled on the server, so it's a lot les organizational work. You can easily see all the songs in the competition and vote and comment on them. Here's an example of a what a competition page looks like (this one is finished): http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/OHC100
I'll definitely look into it and see if I could use it for a competition here. This seems like a great idea!
m3rck is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a chip music label.
yeah i dont really get why they're on there. i can kind of understand why monotonik is on there, but they're not very "chip" either. they did have mod releases though, i guess that's chip enough.
someone should update that list.

Just check this out. Plenty of neat stuff to be found by browsing this thread.

I hope I made my point.
Don't overthink it, this is easy.
Host opens a thread with the theme. Competitors PM link to tunes before deadline. Host packs tunes with tags stripped and puts link to pack (any upload site will do) in thread. Voters PM votes to host. Host compiles results after voting deadline.
What else is there to consider?
Some people probably don't want to download a pack full of mp3s (I know I don't, that shit would take way too much time for me and my shitty internet) How could we stream them?
If I could just stream the mp3s in the thread or something that'd be a hell of a lot easier.

yes! It's definitely something we want to do.
After we get the ppmck side of things stabilized and give the site a proper layout, we'll start to gradually test out the different flavors of xpmck. Initially there will be some limitations based on what flash players are currently out there. Things like the Amstrad, Coleco Vision and MSX don't really have any players available like the one we're using currently for nsf playback(that I know of). James would probably have to build them himself, which could take a bit of time. So C64, GameBoy and Genesis will most likely be up front.
very good to know! i'll definitely try to keep up with the development and kick myself into understanding MML haha

i'm already at botb.
I just thought maybe some sort of competition here could breath some life and creativity into the forums.
you could do voting through a google spreadsheet thing or something.
How would I tally the votes, though? I don't have time to count through posts in a thread saying "I vote for xy."
._.
Do you plan on adding support for other systems besides NES? I really like this idea, but one of the things I'm most interested with MML is its ability to be used by other consoles.
maybe i'll give MML another shot heh.
Well it could be more like a compo or whatever. A sample pack is released and we all make songs with it.
The problem with a samplepack is that not everyone uses sampletrackers, or even uses consoles that can play back samples.
And I really don't want this to become some compilation crap, there's enough of that and this isn't going to be a serious competition by any means. It's just a for fun thing.
Voting definitely could be blind, but it all depends on the people. I think setting a theme could get rid of that. People would be asked to vote on who best interpreted the theme of the compo instead of who they fanboy over/whoever their best friend is/whoever bribed them.
I think guilt for not voting for a friend could be avoided by having a polling system.
As for where to upload, I'd probably have artists upload here and just tag their songs with something indicating they're entering the competition. A PM wouldn't hurt, either.
Since the 48h thread is basically dead, and it seems like it's hard to maintain, I was thinking we could hold a bi-weekly competition.
Why bi-weekly? Well, one week would be for people to write their songs and submit, the next week would be for people to vote which song they felt was best. One week is plenty for a person to write a song, and one week is plenty to get enough votes.
I was thinking to make things more interesting, each competition would have a different theme, people could throw out some suggestions, too.
The only problem i've ran into while thinking this out is keeping track of votes. If the forum had a polling system, that'd be great. Other than that problem, I think this would be a great idea for the site. It'd give people something to come back to and it'd be pretty fun.
Discuss.
The Carl is many, yet he is only one.
Fuckin shapeshifters.
If you're having trouble with notes, learn a bit of music theory.
A little theory never hurt anyone.
Anywere from 1-4 hours.
It depends on how in-depth I want to go with a track.
