I've never really played any NES shmups.
Alex Mauer did suggest this one to me not too long ago:
Guardian Legend (NES). It's sort of a hybrid between a shmup and a zelda game. Pretty badass in my opinion.

Nemesis 1 and 2 (GB) The music is AMAZING.
Project S-11 (GBC) Great game! Aleksi Eeben and Purple Motion did the music.
Raystorm (PSX) There's an HD remake of this for XBLA and PSN. Too bad I own neither of those consoles

You can try using a GBA flasher of some sort. Most likely, the cart is corrupted or something if all it shows is the nintendo logo. Who knows if it can even hold the data.
