Pitch bends and slides work exactly the same for me on my GBC as they did on my DMG.

Not trying to be a dick here or anything, but are you 100% it was the GBC which was responsible for her set sounding so cool? Seems like the mountain of quality sound system would have had a significantly bigger effect on that.. If I got the chance to play that setup with a couple of prosound DMGs, I'm pretty sure the exact same effect would be had

Yeah, because I've had conversations with her where she talked about how she's tried using a DMG and it choked and died on her songs because she uses crazy tables and manipulates kits live. Can't do that on a DMG.

Also it's worth noting that Wet Mango doesn't write a whole lot of fast music, a lot of it is actually pretty slow, but she busts out some crazy speedcore shit sometimes that could never be played on a DMG.

That remark clearly shows me we have totally different understandings about what makes a good song, and listening to your tunes you uploaded here just confirms it. Decent music is not about speed, man.

One, I haven't uploaded a new song here since January of 2011. Two, the last song that I posted here I believe ended up on Bit Shifter's top ten favorite chiptunes of 2011 list (not that this really means anything but it was still a pretty big honor from one of the most respected artists in the scene). Three, that fast shit got me a spot at the last NYC Blip Festival, where from my viewpoint is seems there were at the very least several hundred people dancing & rocking out to it. What makes a music "good" depends on the listener. I'd say my assessment of what makes music good is just fine, because people like different things.

My priorities are making the music I want to make sound exactly the way I want it to sound. I can't do that with a DMG, it's too slow smile

This conversation will continue to go in circles so I'll shut the fuck up tongue

However what you are not taking into account (or at least not talking about) is that the sound is not only less bassy which can be remedied through EQing but the characteristic of the waveforms is also changed. If you look at the examples and know anything about how different looking waveforms affect the spectrum and if you've listened to the DMG and GBC side by side, you will find that the GBC adds some even harmonics to the square waves, pushing their sound characteristic more towards saw (in this case inverse sawtooth). This may or may not be desired, but it's certainly a difference that no reasonable amount of processing can really undo... and a difference that at least I personally care about.

This isn't something I've ever really thought about because it's just not that big of a deal to me, and I doubt it really is to many others. I've played most of the songs I wrote on a DMG on my GBC at some point, and they sounded perfectly fine. If there were any huge differences within the squarewaves, I never noticed them, and I've got a pretty goddamn good ear. I don't care to sit down and inspect waveforms. My thing, as someone who EXCLUSIVELY uses Game Boy Colors live and has for a while, is to educate people who operate under the assumption based on some article written years ago that the Game Boy Color is not a useful tool for creating chipmusic (for the record, I am so damn stubborn about this subject because I used to be one of the people arguing that the GBC was a piece of shit...and then I actually used one!).

I've always said, it comes down to personal preference. If you have a GBC and you dig it, rock out. If you want to try something different, get a DMG. But using the ancient Herbert Weixelbaum article to determine which Game Boy you should use is like trying to become proficient at LSDJ by using Nullsleep's tutorial on his website. It's not 2008 anymore.

I downloaded this because I'm interested in tracking GB music on the PC with a full keyboard (aka not using LSDJ), but my main curiosity is whether or not the GB tracking is as powerful as LSDJ. The GB examples provided are pretty boring, is the full potential of the WAV channel unleashable with this tracker?

This statement is opinion, and I declare your opinion false. If I could right now I'd take a big shit on a pile of prosound modded DMGs.

Opinion or not, here are facts
http://www.herbertweixelbaum.com/comparison.htm

That article was written YEARS ago, and is written using purely dry, direct examples of audio from various Game Boy systems. I even mention this comparison in the article I wrote on the subject. However, for one thing almost all artists who play live are going to use a mixer (as someone who didn't buy his own mixer for the first year of doing shows, lemme just say, buy a fucking mixer). Thus, the GBC having less bass or volume output really doesn't make a difference, just turn up the bass and the gain. There will still be the high pitched whine but I've ever had anyone say to me "Hey man, I really enjoyed your set but that background noise was really awful!". If anyone gives a fuck, they certainly never complain about it. And as I also linked to, for recording, there are methods of COMPLETELY removing the GBCs background noise, and I think even Arnie from Datathrash was going to start selling kits for boxes that did it automatically for live shows. This is not 2008 anymore. The "omg GBC has bad sound" issue is basically non existent if you're willing to put in some goddamn effort. However, there is absolutely no fix for being able to write songs using faster tempos, heavy table usage, and lots of kits (especially with effects or live manipulation of the kits) on a DMG, other than using a machine with a faster processor.

I get a little carried away, sorry. This topic is serious business for me.

Whether that's sarcasm or outright truth, it's 100% accurate.

From the article I linked to above -
The biggest complaint about the CGB is the sound quality, but I feel it is often overstated. Yes, the sound straight from the headphone jack is quiet and completely lacks bass. However, I’ve always felt this was easy enough to correct - I simply boost the gain and the bass on my mixer. I will even argue that I can get as much of a bass heavy sound with my CGB in a live setting as any artist using a DMG. As mentioned above, there is a considerable amount of background noise when using the CGB, but the clever and ever crafty chip-genius EvilWezil has even discovered a work around for that when recording, which can be found here: http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/6976/ … inversion/

So, faster processor and, at the very least, the ability to sound AS GOOD as a DMG when recorded? Yep, GBC wins.

You are OUT OF YOUR MIND!

And completely wrong. This isn't even opinion, the DMG has a much slower processor than any of the above mentioned hardware, and thus there are a lot of things you simply cannot do with it that you can do with a GBC/GBA/SP. Most of the songs I've written in the past two years won't even run on a DMG, they crash pretty early on.

i'm not going to name your songs but i gotta say i expected them to suck a lot more for some reason. these are pretty alright. kinda has a horror movie soundtrack vibe.
