Yeah I'd definitely take Greyhound. But still, I don't have a job and pretty much support myself with music at this point, which is really starting to not work out, haha. But I'm looking at selling my video game collection so hopefully i can scrounge together the money.
I wanted to see about coming out and playing around SXSW but not sure if I'll have the funds...
I have a Bleep Bloop USB cart and a EMS USB cart.
Bleep Bloop Pros:
* As solid of a build as a normal Game Boy cart, meaning I'm not afraid if I accidentally drop it
* Other than Nonfinite sending me a cart that had no drivers installed onto it (& also a blank CD-R that was supposed to have software) and having to have someone manually walk me through that process, it's always been stable. Never had problems with the software or hardware fucking up.
* I've had my cart since September '09 and every time I've used it, it's booted up on the first try.
Bleep Bloop Cons:
* Fucking expensive.
* Omg stolen code ur supporting communist Russia!!1!
EMS USB Pros:
*It's cheap. You can almost buy two carts for the price of one Bleep Bloop cart.
*In theory, having two banks of roms could be useful
EMS USB Cons:
*It's cheap for a reason. The cart feels like a fragile hollow plastic piece of shit that would shatter into a million pieces if you accidentally dropped it. The cart is also too big to fit in any Game Boy cases like the ones you can get on Kitsch Bent.
*The two banks of roms is total bullshit. Only one SRAM file, and my cart started freaking out when I tried adding other roms, basically had to add LSDJ to both banks for it to even work again. And this happened two hours before a show I was doing.
*It can be a pain in the ass to get the cart to boot up. Lots of typical Nintendo game shaking & blowing in the cart usually required.
*Does not work in my GBA SP. Ever. At all. No amount of cart blowing fixes this problem. And it's not the SP, because the Bleep Bloop cart works fine.
*This one is a personal preference, but I don't care for the software.
These are just my experiences. I wouldn't be surprised if my EMS cart was fucked up in some way. But my thought is this, you get what you pay for. The EMS cart is cheap. For the most part it does what it's supposed to, but I'm always afraid trusting my songs on it. I tend to back up my stuff religiously though so it's not a huge issue. If money wasn't an issue I'd go with the Bleep Bloop carts any day. But in reality I'll probably be getting a new EMS cart soon.
Do this shit in the same way they said about Blip Fest 2006 in Reformat The Planet: invite people but tell them straight up "we don't have the money to bring you out here, but if you have the money and you want to come out, then come out and play". I mean even if it were only the west coast people you mentioned it would be a huge show that could easily rival a night at Blip Fest in terms of talent. With advance notice, that fact alone should interest at least SOME people in trying to make it out and play.
I've already had some dudes hit me up about doing a show before Blip so I'm going to see what I can do. Something after could happen as well. Though let it be known that there are other people out here who have much more experience with booking shows than I do (the one of the 13th is the first show I've ever set up).
For me, going to Blip would be more about seeing other artists that I can't see at any other time. No offense to SoCal dudes, but I can see y'all play anytime. If some of those fancy European assholes end up on the Blipfest bill, well, unless we're going to pay for them to come out here, it's worth it to go.

Psh, "eventually" hahaha
not gonna happen, philly's where it's at!
Not even counting all of the smaller, lesser known artists out here, LA has Virt, Trash80, Mr Spastic, 8bitweapon & ComputeHer, and Wet Mango. Those are some fucking heavy hitters. Plus there are tons of us who are doing some killer shit (yes, I'll even put myself into that catagory, fuck modesty) who simply aren't that well known. Once we get a bit of organization and get monthly shows going (which we're WELL on the way to making happen), not only will LA be on the chip map, but it'll be a huge dot. Shit, simply the amount of good artists we have in Southern California pretty much levels every other West Coast city and I think it already rivals Philly. There's a fucking reason why Nullsleep said that LA was the best show on his 2010 tour.
LA is eventually going to make Philly it's bitch. There's probably no touching NYC though.
Fuck the Midwest Scene AND the West Coast Scene. Only scene I care about is the Southern California Scene!
Just wait til the compilation comes out. No one can touch this shit!

and death. but mostly love
can we pitch in to go by car? im SO willing. LETS DO THIS SHIT!
L.A. CHIPTHRASH INVADES! (hopefully)
Seriously, if we fucking do this...oh my god.
LETS FUCKING DO IT. According to Mapquest it's only 42 hours straight driving time. Get multiple drivers and it's nothing.
No open mic THIS TIME unfortunately. Really tight schedule, five hours to squeeze in seven acts. I put this show together for my best friend who is visiting from Norway, to show him how we do shit in California. The next one I do will probably only have three acts and an open mic would be possible if there was interest.
Just added in the headlining spot: Trash80.
I try to make it out every year, I fail to make it out every year. Maybe this year will be different. MAYBE.
Mad respect to Koolskull, glad to see him getting more of his stuff out there. REAL LA CHIPTHRASH MOTHERFUCKERS!
Edit: Also, this release has some fucking sick beats.
You definitely should. As I said on twitter just now, to be within 100 miles of this show and not make it out, you would be fucking up royal. Some great underrated chip talent on this line up.
