Does deliberately complicating the presentation of the music just for the sake of having something to do and be able to say "See, I AM performing" really make LSDJ performance more noble than simply pressing Play?

I don't know WHY it took me so long to check this out and I'm kicking myself right now. I just started playing around zx sounds in Beepola and I think I have a greater appreciation for this because of that. Really nice music here. You are really fooling my ear with this crazy channel work, I thought you had 4 or 5 channels to work with at times, haha.

What software do you use to compose? I know you've probably mentioned it before. Do you compose on a pc and then transfer to zxspectrum, or do you do everything from the native platform? I found out that Joe McAlby composed all his Gameboy music on a ZXSpectrum with his own custom music tracking software before actually converting it to code for the Gameboy to use, so this ZXSpectrum stuff really is fascinating to me right now.

This is really cool. I enjoyed listening to it.

I really enjoyed your video game stuff and the winter album "October November December"(? I think I got that right). Kept me feeling chill throughout the summer. smile

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you've done these days. By the way, what do you call the style of music that you do? It has such a distinctive vibe to it that I've heard in the music of other artists, but I have idea what to call it. Somebody said it was IDM but I don't know...

I don't know if it's just my computer or bandcamp's mp3 streaming format but the first track was really crackly.

Edit: Was that scoobystep I just heard? yikes

Edit: Yeah, all the tracks are crackly probably a combination of my computer and bandcamp. Anyway this is pretty cool.

Artistic license. Art doesn't have to follow expectations. It's symbolic. Nobody ever truly reaches the finish line. We are merely racing around it. The gravity of success is so powerful that it pulls us in, but our drive is so strong that we overshoot it, and thus are constantly orbiting around the finish line, never to make contact.

The kicker: If you divide Feryl's avatar into squares of the same size as the ones present, it will add up to 16.

The racers, the course, and the flag in the middle ARE the finish line but the racers will never see it because they are too busy trying to outdo each other. O.O

Wait so the blue and green squares aren't position tracking blips on the HUD map for a racing game? yikes

Oh, so you weren't looking for a video game sprite type thing? What I would do is shrink it down to like 64x64 and then trace over the outline and then clear out the extra pixels and colors and things.

These images remind me of like Mike Tyson's Punchout mugshots.

Honestly, I think his newer stuff sounds better than the old stuff. At least "I Need Your Love" has something of a derived radix-esque demoscenish vibe to it to keep me almost interested. The melody is a bit weak, but that is to be expected since the song can rely on the lyrics. It seems like it would fit right into a chill little demo thing. It's pretty generic, but at least it sounds okay.

I wonder... do people not like music that sounds like it was "written by a committee" because it was written by a committee, or because of the actual way that it sounds? If there were no marketing committees making those types of sounds but only artists who aim to do the things that non-committee artists do, would people who are more into independent stuff be more accepting of them?

His old stuff annoys me for some reason. I don't know what it is.

Oh, woops, that's what I meant when I said "Getting Started" my bad.

I'd  forgotten about PXTone. I haven't used pxtone, but I know Orgmaker (made by the same programmer) is pretty neat and relatively user friendly.

And yes, I'd forgotten to mention that you don't need a modded gameboy. You just need a writable gameboy cartridge with a music producing program.

Well the majority of the answers to your question would "learn how to tracker" with any number of the many free trackers out there, so... there are no shortcuts to success.

You can run LSDJ without a gameboy by using an emulator like bgb. But lsdj is trackerish, so you probably won't want it.

LMMS is a free open-source DAW that has a bunch of chiptune based plugins. That'd probably be the easiest free option for you.

Really, though, trackers are great. HivelyTracker, Klystracker, Deflemask (it can do Gameboy stuff), SlowTracker (lol), MilkyTracker, FamiTracker, Boyscout, p5tracker, Beepola, faust music creator there are so many tracker options.

Oh, also chiptune is not easier to make than any other type of music, so if you are thinking you can "easily make good chiptune" as opposed to any other form of music without any musical knowledge whatsoever then you are in for a shock. If you want to be an artist you have to put in the work and time to do it properly. It took me about 2 hours constant to get used to FamiTracker, and I'm STILL not completely comfortable with everything about it.

Learn to music through (hopefully) talent, hard-work, and self-criticism. Don't post your first "chiptune" online for just anybody to see because it is very likely that it'll be terrible. Show it to somebody close to you whom you trust to be honest with you and hopefully has good taste in music.

so that's why you have a checkered flag in your avatar. I always thought your name was just a "clever" spelling of feral.

Wow! O.O

Some people were wondering if you were going to change your name to RockRan in Japan but it looks like no. big_smile

The 80's are comin' back strong. Last decade it was the 70's. 2020 will be the age of the 90's revival.
