Thanks for all the responses! I feel my first post might have been a bit misleading,, when I talked about not going for the tape sound I did not mean that I wanted a hi-fi/crisp sound neccessarily, I just don't want tape for the sound per sé.

Sleepytimejesse, I might try that Zoom H4N, looks great! Most likely I will just buy a tape recorder pretty seen and start recording and try to figure out what happens. I will be sure to let you know if I get good results.

Dear fellow chiptuners,

Last week my computer broke down due to a faulty harddrive and I've been making music without using it since. It occurred to me that I only use my computer as a recording device. I would like to experiment with recording directly to cassette tape (not the big tapes) but do you think I would need other pieces of gear for this? I normally master my recording by gently compressing and then hard limiting them in ableton; can a tape do something similar for me ,i.e., does tape compression work for this kind of thing? Would I need an extra compressor or limiter to make it sound good?

I'm not really interested in getting that 'tape sound', just interested in moving away from using a laptop at all (except for digitizing recordings maybe), so if there are other options you think I should consider I am all ears.

Thanks!
Vegas

Woahh man this looks so awesome!

This would be perfect for me because I always have trouble writing stuff in ableton because it lacks the workflow present in stuff like nanoloop. Also really great live/performance factor I'd imagine! What platform are you developing for now? In the description it still says Raspberry Pi is the main platform but I see you've already discarded that possibility.

Keep up the good work!

Could you send me a PM with contact info or something? I have some questions and I don't want to clutter up the forum with conversation threads.

You've probably seen this but this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-density_modulation Includes an algorithm in pseudocode to convert from PCM to PDM. Is this what you are looking for? If you want I can try and implement it in C++ or something, doesn't seem that hard. It's weird that there are no apps (or implemented versions) of this algorithm readily available.

This is too far to travel for me, otherwise I'd love to play!

Just a head's up: the link to the flyer isn't working for me and posting the date in the post itself is a good idea (I initially missed it).

The first thing that comes to mind is Zan-Zan-Zawa-Veia (I really like mokè mokè) or maybe disasterpeace (rise of the obsidian interstellar).

I know these are both more proggy than psychedelic but I feel that in chip these two aren't very far apart.

If you are talking about the psytrance kind if psychedelic I unfortunately can't help you.

Oh man I remember that jackie chan tune, must've played that game a hundred times when I was little!

Great stuff

very very good! also great artwork!

Thanks for the thread!

Here's a recording of the show if anyone is interested. First hour is Dub and stuff. Second hour is me live on 2 gameboys with lsdj.

Just a heads up: The url in the original post is probably formatted incorrectly and is not working for me. When I click it I go to http://www.{https.com//lain2097.bandcamp.com/album/professed-and-real-intention} I think the curly braces are because of some faulty BBCode thing.

Also, that cover art reminds me of something. Did you make it yourself?

Beautiful! Could you explain more about the probabilistic sequencing? Sounds really interesting!

Surprised no one has mentioned Boa yet! Probably a bit heavy for what you want but it's good sound design/wubs etc. https://soundcloud.com/boaconstructorbeats

My own stuff is bass-heavy, not so much on the Dub side, more on the hip-hop side: https://soundcloud.com/vegas-diamond

I used to have to use a VM for this.
Tutorial didn't really help me so i just tried to figure it out myself, i've done that twice now.

1. download the files from here
2. drop that shit into your documents
3. open up terminal
4. type in cd(change directory) documents
5. type cd ems-flasher
6. then you should be able to just type in the commands for the ems flasher
"./ems-flasher --read --sav --bank 1 --verbose myfirstlsdj.sav"

there you go big_smile

+1, this is EXACTLY what I do! I also follow the chainsaw police tutorial and it worked very well so +1 to that guy too! and while I'm at it +1 to everyone! +1!

You're plugging it into a mono amp or using a mono convertor jack. Thats why you're not hearing panning commands. Get a 1/8 to RCA cord and plug it into a mixer.

EDIT: Spelling.

Awesome thanks! Was actually looking at RCA cables this morning so I'm glad to hear its worth a purchase!

Once plugging it into a mixer I would also need to get my hands on a RCA to 1/4" cable for the output right?

It depends! If you have panning notes (and I'm assuming you do due to your first post) they will still be converted to mono if you have an RCA to jack adapter (i.e. your notes won't disappear but they won't pan because your signal is mono). Your best bet is to either use an RCA mixer or use 2 channels on the mixer (or 1 stereo channel, which is what I do).

Here is the device to add midi: http://store.highlyliquid.com/products/umr2

Anyone here actually use this?

Yes, all the time live and on songs, through some effects pedals (usually chorus, filter & delay.
The ending on this song (2:27 and onwards) for example is a casio VL-1 through a filter and delay: https://soundcloud.com/vegas-diamond/ho … chiptunes.
Same here (5:00 and onwards): https://soundcloud.com/vegas-diamond/ghost-new

EDIT: I can also confirm that the battery life on this thing is stellar! I've had it for 1.5 years now and only have had to recharge the batteries twice. The sound, the portability and the fact that it's monophonic make it a great tool for composing or adding harmonies live. I would not use it for intensive soloing but it works fine for doubling chords.
