My parents don't really know much about chip, other than that I listen to it sometimes. Every so often one of them will come in when I'm listening to Micro D, or one of the compilation albums I have downloaded. My friends aren't massive fans, most of the time, they either don't know what it is, or don't care, although I do have one friend who has a slight interest in it, enjoys some of the tracks I show him, and is infact the guy who bought me my first DMG as a birthday present. When it comes to the band, the reception is varied. The Bassist likes some tracks, but doesn't really do bouncy, dancy stuff, likes gritty tracks, and the guitarist doesn't like it that much.

Yo, if you'd read the thread, then you'd understand why peeps are "flinging poop" as you so eloquently put it. Not only are you not reading the reasons, you're also exaggerating what little you have read, and I have a feeling you've only read the first page, and either skimmed through the rest, or just outright skipped it. GJ 10/10 post, would read again.

I'd say go for it, as long as you have the links and fill the fields like everyone else.. its hard to go wrong with Google sheets, though a google form that inputs to it may make things a little easier for people intimidated by data.

As for organising the form, just click on the tops of column and you can sort by A - Z or Z to A...

Thanks for that, put myself down.

Does it matter how much of a "fresh fish" one is to the scene? ^^;

I'm gunna second this question. I want to add myself, but apart from the fact that I have a feeling I'd end up messing it up somehow, I'm also not sure if I qualify to go on the list.

Suppose so!

I honestly really like that idea. Ill be home from school in a week or so, and I would love to see a show in my area. So heres the question my chipper friends, whats the Southern California scene look like? Any of you guys down there?

Not sure how big the cali scene is, but I know Teh D3th St4r lives there.

well, how the heck is anyone going to relate to that?  It's just horrible to look at, it's horrible for me and I know what I'm doing with it.  Eugh.  At least with pc trackers related things are either on the same screen or can be split onto the same screen.

This, I never really got to grips with piggy because of it's look, it isn't nice to stare it, and it's a bit of a pain to learn to use. For something with a good, user-friendly interface, something like milky, or famitracker is going to be your best bet. For a workshop, each have their own merits, milkytracker has it's very user-friendly design with buttons that clearly tell you what things do, and famitracker, although not as friendly, produces sounds that more people, that the general public would call associate with chip.

4mat wrote:

Actually, thinking about it at a chip music workshop what hardware are people going to best relate to?   I'd imagine it'd be gameboy, so perhaps that is the route to go.

Although it is a better tool to use, as it's recognizable, and you don't have to explain that "No even though it is on a computer, this is the kind of music that would play on an NES/Amiga/Commodore 64" but you do have the problem that without a decent explanation, it can be quite a pain to use. Seeing as this is going to be a workshop, although I don't know the age of the people, or the setup of the workshop, I can't say for certain, but it's going to be better if there's less talking, and more hands-on stuff there.

Roaches that don't like to be exposed to the outside by the wrong kind of people, they need someone they can trust, and until that day, they'll stay hidden, and when they are show for brief occasions, they are misunderstood, and unable to explain themselves due to the ignorance already spread about them. They only want to be understood, to be loved.

Last time I delt with him was 2-3 years ago, and he was quite a reliable guy, although sometimes he wouldn't reply to emails for a few days at a time, but went out of his way for me which was nice. More recently though, he's got more and more unreliable, even back then, it wasn't considered to good an idea to buy from him. In one of the threads on here bashing him, he said he was thinking of quitting selling all together. You'd probably be better of buying from any of the reliable sellers (Kitsch, ASM etc)

I find myself constantly changing the way I refer to chipmusic or try to explain it depending on my audience. For some of my friends.. I can say "chipmusic" and they know instantly what I'm talking about. For others.. I have to call it "my nintendo music" otherwise they don't get it.

Friends - "Chipmusic? That's the one with old games consoles and shit right?"
Me - "Yeah, but there's more to it than that"
Friends - "Yeah, I get that you don't have the same limitations, full potential of the console and all that"
They just lump tracker stuff in as chip, so I don't really have to explain it any more than that, or explain what trackers are, and why they are chiptune.

All the recent posts have been constructive, and now your just taking cheap shots at me. If you could join the constructive crowd, that'd be appreciated. Otherwise I think your point has been made, and you dont have to stay. I realize that alot of people get into something and then forget about it a little while later. Good thing im not a lot of people.

He's being a dick because he cares, be cruel to be kind and all that shit, even though what he said wasn't that bad, and you seem to be overeacting.

i've lost hope for explaining my chip shit other people, so i just say that i'm a dj and then they don't talk to me anymore, which is nice.

Haha. When I first heard "8Bit Christmas" I told my brother it probably wasn't real chiptune/8bit/80's-game-console-music because it had too many sounds at once. ::) *smh*

When I started hearing stuff on milky, or any tracker stuff, I refused to call it chip, as I was strongly under the belief that "It has to run on hardware" and that it could only have the same capacity of whatever console it was running on, I'm pretty sure I even got in an argument with e.s.c. in some thread about it. This notion was formed due to me being misinformed. Back when I was on 8bc, anytime there was anything that wasn't from a gameboy or nes, it was filled with comments about how it wasn't "True chiptune" and it wasn't until I came here that I realized how wrong I was.

Wow, I haven't heard that name in ages, is that still a thing, or are you using the same version that I still have installed on my win98 laptop?

Why would you ruin such a good tape? You monster!

Also, here's an alternative way to do glitch pictures, shamelessly stolen from the thread of the same name on another forum I browse.

Corrupt pictures!

1. Open the picture of choice in photoshop, or any other picture editing software that supports exporting to a RAW format
2. Save as .RAW (In photoshop: "Photoshop RAW Format (.RAW)") with no interlacing
3. In audacity, Import > Raw data... and use U-Law in the codec
4. Play it for no reason (optional)
5. Apply effects, like wahwah and compression + amplification
6. Export, choose other thingy without compression, press Options in the bottom and do U-Law and RAW, save it as the raw fomat again
7. Open in photoshop, do 3 channels and the original resolution
8. Done!

You can also, instead of audacity, use other stuff that manipulates non-image files and supports raw supporting! (Try opening it in a text editor and writing a story about bald midgets in the middle for example)

Experiment and have fun!

Thought it would be worth posting, seeing as it's different to AC's way.

I'm really confused by the reception here. I know that dubstep is oft looked down upon here, and so is the description of "chiptune is remixed video game music". So are you guys defending chipstep as being more legitimate and original than simply  remixed vgmstep? Are you saying Super Mario is too good for dubstep? The definition posted is clearly a description of chipstep, not chiptune, as evidenced by the last sentence, just in case that wasn't clear. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what it is...

I think the reason that the OP is getting a load of shit is that he hasn't written a particularly accurate description of what chipstep is. That and dubstep gets hate on every part of the internet, for various, sometimes understandable (but a lot of times not) reasons. People are also getting mad at him for making a page that they thought was a chiptune share-y place, but is actually dedicated to a sub genre.

SketchMan3 wrote:

In any case, OP, what everybody is trying to tell you is that Chip* music has transcended it's video game roots, and mentioning "video game" and "remix" in the paragraph as "chiptune" is not smiled upon. Chiptune has a very rich, original, and creative history, and I encourage to visit the stickied "chipmusic faq" thread to see what it's really all about.

this

start with a PC tracker, I use famitracker, and it made using any other similar software a hell of alot easier. I was put of by LSDJ at first, not having a flashcart, and running it on emulators was a pain, so I started using fami, never regretted it. Because I started of with it, when I started using milky and nitrotracker, they were easier to use, and so was LSDJ when I got my flashcart, a lot of the skills are transferable to some degree, and you can use each of them a lot easier.
