Like most scenes, it's pretty awesome in real life, and for the most part total bullshit on the internet. It's too easy to be a smartass tough guy behind a keyboard and that makes people much more likely to say shit that would get them punched right in the mouth if they said it to someone's face.

There is quite a bit of that, the internet is a brilliant mask

Don't bother with LSDJ, do all your music with shitwave. Only shitwave. Or, if you wanna be really hardcore, don't even bother with a gameboy.  Buy a top of the line PC and ableton live, and take shitty midi's of pop songs from the 80's and run them through the magical8bit plugin.

I hope you're joking

you can check out from the shop without creating a paypal account, with debit or credit,

so i'm not sure why your debit card wouldn't work right now.

am i missing something with that?

It's almost like I don't know how to use my own eyes. I actually hadn't noticed, now I feel quite the fool.

ask your parents.  not trying to point out your age or anything, i'm serious.  just ask them, if they let you use the card in real life, and you're responsible, you can use paypal as a minor with your responsible adult's permission.  you won't violate paypal terms if they let you (and they are over 18 and your legal permission giver)

alternatively, we can do western union/moneygram.

try to avoid google services because there is wayyyy too much fraud going on there.

I wasn't really aware that I could use paypal as a minor, I knew there was this thing over in the US that was like a paypal student account or something, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. I'm going to talk to them about this tomorrow.

Does anyone have personal experience of recording with GBA SP? I got deal today from work. I could change my old Xbox that I don't need, for 2 GBA SP's.

Sound quality is ok but it's always quite quiet which is one of the main problems with it. From what I remember it's a little fuzzy, but that isn't to noticeable. I would record a comparison between DMG and SP, but I can't for the life of me remember where I left my adapter, I was using it yesterday as well...

No need to mention the age of him, no need. But yeah, I agree with you, up until that bit it is.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not worrying about mods and stuff like that too much at the moment. I just wanted to ask these things before I get any console. Cause later on _if_ I want to mod it, it should be possible. And as I said, I'm an electrician. So doing that kind of easy mods like Pro Sound is "walk in the park". I think im gonna get GBC's cause I can get 2-3 of those in a price of 1 DMG and there dont seem to be big differences in sound comparing to DMG. I think im gonna get 2 because I want to have an extra if the mod fails.

@ Alpine, the Pro Sound mod doens't cost too much. So I might wanna test it out just for fun.

@ Bit Wish, I get your point. Im gonna try to get LSDj soon so I can get started. But as I said before, it's not too easy to get those Flash Cards and stuff like that in here.. So I need to wait few weeks to get even started..

I was more on about how much a DMG would cost, not a prosound mod. Oh and as someone who uses a CGB to track, the sound quality isn't as good.

i'm under the impression a DMG will typically always be cheaper than a CGB, perhaps thats not the market everywhere though

It's certainly not the case over here, DMGs are about £15-£17 whereas CGBs are like £6-£8, although you can pick 'em up for poscket change at carboot sales. This is why I have one DMG, and 4 CBGs. And H0bla, don't get too caught up in modding your console, just learn the software first, get comfortable using it before you buy and mods or anything like that. It would be terrible if you wasted a lot of money on a console you decide you don't like.

No need to be a dick man.

This is aimed at both kitsch and apeshit, could you guys add debit cards as a payment method? I use mine to buy games on steam, and the odd thing from amazon, but other than that there seem to be very few sites where I can use it. I also don't have convenient access to a paypal account, which is one of the reasons that I haven't bought much.

Even if he did offer to, the postage there and back is going to be quite a bit.

Maybe you are just picking out the things that do not sound right and missing the stuff that sounds fine. To me a lot of sample based plugins sound terrible (some synth edit stuff / toad / magical 8bit / etc) as well as DSP synthesis that utilize filtering algorithms for interpolation. There are ways around it, and some emulations or DSP based synths do a great job at it- But the terrible ones are also some of the more popular and give off a general distaste for the thing as a whole. Personally I just concentrate on what sounds good to me, and don't care where it's coming from. I use all the wares, both hard and soft. (ew.)

I guess that's all it really comes down to, I like the sound it makes. I mean if I could listen to stuff that was made on ipad etc that sounded as good as the stuff on the hardware, or used good samples I'd listen to it.

So my question is this: if person A uses a fully capable hardware device (like a modern computer or iPad) but makes music that sounds like classic gameboy tunes (either via samples, emulators or just clever synthesis) and person B uses a limited hardware device with a soundchip (like a NES or gameboy or c64) but somehow manages to push the limits to the point that it sounds like "modern music," would you say that person A is making chip music and person B is not? Would person A's music be more "chip"?

With the way I use the word chiptune, I would say B. I mean I wouldn't listen to it, or A's, but it's still more chip.

Basically I like the deep bittyness of older game systems, and it makes it feel more "legit" if it runs on the hardware, I'm just really damn fussy. It's quite easy to tell if someone is using samples or some app on their iPad. I don't know, it's just something about it never sounds quite right.

Sometimes.
Though, where I live, if you do manage to get anything up and finished without getting caught, the city and/or some uptight transplants from the Silicon valley will cover your work within 12 hours. The outlying places worth painting are full of aspiring graph writers and taggers (re. not artists) and they have no respect. They'll run over your masterpiece with their two dollar rattle cans, and try to emulate Banksy or Pez.
Nowadays, I stick to canvas. But I've been known to hit a high rise or two when I'm up in the Sacremento area.

That's pretty damn rough, down here most of the "artists" are old time graffers, in their late 30s, early 40s who just do stuff for the council (painting skateparks etc) kinda ironic that they're working for the peeps who used to paint over their stuff. Mostly we got taggers, I happen to be one. I get annoyed with all these toys going over good stuff, just because they don't know any better, if I saw anything like that I wouldn't go over it, I probably wouldn't tag anywhere near it. As a rule, I just don't go over other peeps work, common courtesy y'know?

Kinda a dumb question I know, but this goes back o what bronychip said, how d you fit a 1/4 jack in a gameboy? I'm no expert on the placement and internal workings of gameboys, from what I remember there isn't a lot of space.

Dude, I'm sorry I couldn't build something more appealing to you out of the junk I had in my garage. I'll be sure to run out and buy some MDF and build a boring modular box for you gawk at.

Anyway; WOAH! Gentlemen, please, rest your sphincters!
I'll get some more work done tomorrow. All of the happy creative people can enjoy some artist making an electronic instrument out of garbage, and all of the cynical jerks can criticize and bitch about it.

In the mean time, enjoy my new painting:

Yo, that's pretty sick, you a graffer?

Is this a subtle way to bash fakebit? Is it defending fakebit? Is fakebit v purist chipmusic even a thing anymore? (fun fact: it's about as much of a thing as brostep vs. chillstep)

You can't really compare fakebit vs purist chipmusic to brostep vs dubstep as bro and dub are to entirely different musical sub genres. Dubstep has been around since the early 2000s, a lot earlier than bro, it also focuses more on bass growls than bass wobbles. It's not like brostep is a fake version of dubstep.
