They're raws. If you add a wav header it should be fine. Does piggy eat wav?
Back when alex_mauer packed them together I noted this data:
8bit / pcm / signed / no endian / 8363Hz

Little gem I found:
http://arcadearchive.com/ has recordings of vintage arcade machines, such as the infamous Zoltan fortune-telling cabinet.

I have to say that Vocaloid always sends me on a trip straight to uncanny valley. I think I've yet to listen to a song made with it that I feel actually comfortable with.

Wow, e.s.c. and NikViz. This has to be the best combo since waffles and hookers. Looking forward to listening.

Re: Generative/Procedural music (49 replies, posted in Collaborations)
Well, the level of randomness depends on the seed and the level of abstraction your algorithm will provide. I'm not placing any hard restrictions on that, but I guess we'll want a little more than x = rnd(); play(x);

Sweet! If this happens, I think it would be cool to have a small description with every track that gives some info on the translation algorithm/setup used.

Topic: Generative/Procedural music (49 replies, posted in Collaborations)
After watching gijs' self-playing gameboy, I thought I'd make a thread and ask if there is a big enough interest here in creating a generative music compo.
- Software / hardware doesn't matter, as long as most elements are algorithmically created and it's kept chippy
- I think using data of something stylish (weather data of the last 7 years, a picture file, your mom's weight table etc) as random input seed would be more interesting than just white noise
So, anybody interested?

Re: Gabber Kick (9 replies, posted in Nintendo Handhelds)
Remember that the original gabber kick is just a 909 (sometimes 808) kick with guitar overdrive or distortion applied to it. On a gb you should probably be able to synthesize that on a pulse channel, although you could just use a sample on the wav I guess. If you want to synthesize it, you should make the pitch attack section fall off slower than you would normally do for a kick. Most gabber stabs are usually that way, and depending on the sound you're aiming for, you'll have to adjust the initial pitch (ie fall-off depth).
The second thing is that they tend to change waveform in the sustain/decay section (could be emulated with a change in pulse width a tick or two later). If you're working on the wav channel, try hybrid waveforms between sine and square/saw (a spiky sine will usually give it a better bottom with the saw elements providing the buzzy top).
Sorry that I can't give you any more specific tips, I never worked with LSDJ or NL. Hope this helps anyway
Edit: Ah another thing. I often hear pulse kicks on GB that don't stop decreasing pitch all the way through. Especially for gabber stabs it's important that the sustain/decay section stays on pitch with the rest of of the track. The more fuzzy (uhm.. the more top range it has) your waveform is, the more it'll clash with the rest of the song if you don't do that.

All samples from Pocket Music (GB Version): http://little-scale.blogspot.com/2010/0 k-rom.html
Extracted from the ROM.
Again, many thanks for your contributions here. Added!
I've edited the first post so samples for consoles and old comps are now sorted by system, and made an extra section for vintage synths. I'll probably have to do a complete do-over once the list gets any bigger.

It just an era term. If you where alive then, and not shitting your pants every five mins, everything was advertised as 8bit!!!!!!!!
True. If you consider it that way (ie common CPU register size), it works.

Re: Definition of Chiptune, chipmusic, 8-bit sound (24 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I always thought that the term referred to the output resolution. Not that that would make a xBit categorization easier, since DACs and stuff mess with the discrete-ness as well. And every system uses it's own trickery to further complicate things. If I remember correctly, the OPL uses an 8Bit table to form the rising quarter of a sine and just flips that, making the output 9bit (not counting the DAC that seems to operate with floats and likely adds some kind of interpolation).

This seems to be a copy of the MP-7 pack available at kb6, albeit an older version. I recommend getting the kb6 version (has three additional bongo samples).
Keep digging, everyone!
