What's your preference in terms of writing and entering notes? Do you like using trackers or is a piano roll more your thing?

If trackers are ok than I would recommend LSDj just because is the most common, it's portable, it's easy to use, midi syncable, etc.

If you prefer more of a piano roll for entering notes like a modern DAW, than I would recommend something Like MSSIAH for the Commodore 64, Midines for the NES, and mGB for the gameboy (using arduinoboy of course)

There is also another option in terms of writing. There is the Synth based softwares. You can again use Midines and mGB(arduinoboy) as live synths using a keyboard to perform the notes live, but you can also get cynthcart for c64 and play it like a synth too. MSSIAH also has a monosynth program.  One synth I've really been liking lately is Spritesmod's Gameboy Advance Midi synth cable. That one you'd have to build the circuit and flash the chip yourself but it's fun once the cable is built.

When it comes to chipmusic, there are just so so many options.

My advice would be to either start with the system you have the most nostalgia for, or start with the system that has the specs/number of channels/sounds you desire.  I started with Commodore 64 because the chip was more sophisticated, and there was lots of mods for the c64 I could perform. Modding the systems is a BIG part of it for me. So that's another thing to keep in mind. Do you want to mod your own systems or just plug and play?

Finished my first attempt at a 1-bit tune. It's not very long but my god it takes so long to program on this thing. (At least for me)

TI-82 Classical Tune

One thing I've noticed is that my batteries do not last very long. The screen quickly becomes very dim. I can get like 10-20 minutes out of it before it starts getting hard to read. Haven't had the batteries die on me yet cause I end up changing them just out of the need to see what I'm doing.

Has anyone had similar experiences with their TI-82?

Yeah. I forgot $D500 is very common too. Now that you mention it. I've seen 3SID releases with SIDs at $D500 and $D600. But even that 3SID tracker you linked too has the SIDs at $DE00 and $DF00

What exactly is 'Ground Boost? and how would I install?  Also +1 for using DIP switches big_smile

SID2SID does give you independent control of the second sid. I use it with MSSIAH, and cynthcart supports it for stereo. All a tracker would need is a coder that implemented the commonly used second sid registers ($DE00 or $DF00) for the extra channels.

I really dig the monitor setup in profile. Perfect for tracking.

I forgot to ask, what format are you accepting? Does it have to be 100% chip? If so, can it be multiple machine like a MSSIAH+LSDj track?

Edit: Done accepting artists.

Wouldn't this be more fair/effective if you only label a spot filled when the song is done? I just wonder how many are going to end up not finishing for whatever reason, and also how many are going to end up not even attempting a song cause they see 'all the spots are filled'.  Apeshit's Heebie-GB comp had over 30 folks 'enter' but only about two actually submitted a song. This was posted yesterday right? Sure hope the most qualified artists all happened to be online yesterday to get a spot hmm

Cool. I missed this thread. I'm down for next year if you decide to continue this. It's a shame no one would step up to the plate for this. Carillon is NOT difficult people. it's actually easier than LSDj. Once I get my saving working on my EZFlashIV/goombacolor setup I'm gunna be working on a song for this.

The front plastic square logo I got out of the top of my VIC-1541 Floppy Drive. If you open up the enclosure it is attached only by some plastic clips I cut off and sanded down. I then painted the C= red and blue. The commodore "sticker" on the battery cover isn't actually a sticker, It is made out of thin metal. I again got it from the same VIC Floppy Drive. It was the front banner graphic right above the floppy slot, very much like the one featuring a rainbow on my 1541 drive pictured in my original post.

Who's even making midines anymore?

Wayfar.

lol, that's debatable.

I actually suspect a specific ebayer (sykdeity) for being wayfar in disguise. Looking at his feedback responses, there are 28 sold midines 1.1.1 listings.

Not sure if there ever was a list. I'd be interested too if anyone has the info for it.
I sure wish the samples were louder though. I can't find any very useable sound in that whole library. Triangle is just too loud compared to 'em all.

Have you tried a power adaptor? or ordering new battery contacts from kitch-bent? They're on sale! tongue
