You can put me under Fashion and T-Shirt design I'm selling a shirt that says "Keep Calm and 8-Bit Dubstep On."

Oooh I'll have to watch this when I get some freetime!

I'm surprised chipstep is still a thing. Come on, man, dubstep got boring and saturated in 2010/2011. Just let her die already.

I'd probably say Renoise is not very good to start on..

Renoise was the first tracker I really started using. It was a little different around 2007-2008, but for the most part it was ok for learning the basics of tracking and later on I started to learn about automation and stuff.

The only really confusing part is maybe mixing in renoise. You have to know about compressors and stuff and even today I'm simply trash when it comes to making songs sound nice and polished in renoise.

Me, personally, I'd say something like GoatTracker would be a pain to start with.

This is awesome to see! Definitely beats ripping instruments manually and retuning them with this old DOS program I've had forever.

someone saw the smash bros documentary, huh?

barbeque's recent noise release got me thinkin about chip-noise and stuff.

does anyone have some recommendations on what to listen to? droney chip stuff would be interesting too, i'm a huge fan of ambient drone. i know about the mist toggles but that's about it when it comes to noise/drone in the chip scene!

FM synths are kinda like Pokemon; gotta catch 'em all!

They're all practically the same though haha. It's just like "oh wow, this one's even MORE of a pain in the ass to program."

Now sick hybrid digital shit like the ESQ-1, crosswave junk, phase distortion, and the crapload of other hype-sounding 80s digi synths? Hell yeah. Collect em all!

i think its a natural thing to both love and hate what you do in anything in life, maybe not 'hate'. but perhaps something close to it.

I think instead of 'hate' you're thinking of 'critical.' We love to make music, we're just very critical of our work. As the saying goes, your biggest critic is yourself.

i have tried to quit writing music 4 times to date.
best time: 14 months

definitely agree with this. sometimes creativity with music wanes and it's fine to take a break. not to say every time i've "taken a break" from music i've been afraid i'll never return to it. I always do, though. pretty sure the longest i've gone without making a song is somewhere around 8-9 months. But in that time I was just practicing guitar stuff and finding other creative outlets.

I definitely understand where OP is coming from in terms of college eating up a lot of time. Work eats up a lot, too. It's fine to have tons of little sketches and 4 bar loops lying around, though. They're good to come back to now and then with a fresh mind to see if you can expand them. I think that's how 90% of my songs are made anyways. Make a short loop, let it sit for a few months, come back to it later and try adding and tweaking shit around.

OP, you might want to try out other aspects of music, too. I've found that to help a lot. Switch genres, instruments, programs, trackers, whatever. A little variety never hurt.

When you said hardcore I was expecting something more along the lines of bands like Floorpunch or something.

I feel like these could be better if there was a little more to them. Maybe some better sounds or something.

you can choose any of these.

Google throws a hissy fit and Avast goes bonkers about trojan horses every time I try to visit the site, just wondering if anyone else is having this problem or can tell whoever runs it that this happens.

sad such a bummer. i wanted to dig through their releases.

mori from japan is mistakenly listed as a 'group' (of many artists) but he's actually just that awesome.

Interesting! I haven't heard much about tracker artists from Japan. Any other suggestions?
