For those of you who don't know, Rob Pheg is some guy from Texas who went to a show that IAYD played, and upon hearing IAYD's music and not liking/understanding it, threatened to throw a beer bottle at him. Whether or not this was the fault of the sound guy at the House of Rock in Corpus Christi is inconsequential now, as it's now a competition to see who can jump the shark the fastest.
"Hey Adam, are you still making that 8-bit shit, man?"
"Kind of, although I've been creatively stagnant and the scene-"
"Oh cool, you ever heard of Sabrepulse? He writes the craziest 8-bit Nintendo shit."
"Yeah."
"You should write some crazy shit like Sabrepulse."
To me, chiptunes sounds like a fluffy adolescent hobby, like legos. Chipmusic sounds a bit more refined and dignified.
Whoa, you must be using an old version of LSDJ then. In that case, you can check out your version's manual here:
Battle Lava wrote:can you think of something, even if vague, that you would want to accomplish with tables? Then maybe someone could post something. It helps to be a little more specific.
What have you done so far?
Have you tried using tables in conjunction with noise instruments to create a snare sound, for example?
Or have you tried arpeggiation or pulse width modulation?
the last two paragraphs on this page discuss using tables win lsdj, have you seen it already?
I haven't really done anything with tables yet, I've been using trial and error with it but it still doesnt help much cus I like to know what it means when I'm doing it. Is there anywhere that I could see a description of each setting? like V- volume etc.
Something I'd want to accomplish would be making a sound that starts from a high pitch then drops to a low pitch if that makes sense
You would want to use the L or P command for something like that.
To see basic command information within LSDJ, go to the project screen > help > command list. You can also set a command and doubletap A to make a brief description of the command scroll across the top of the screen.
Just like with anything else in sound design, your best results are either going to come from:
1. Experimentation and re-use of cool ideas you've found.
2. Knowing what you want something to sound like and using your knowledge of your software/hardware to achieve it.
Once you're familiar with the behavior of each of the commands in LSDJ, either one of these steps should be a breeze (usually).
I would love to check out the source code to this... seeing as it's a shell script it's going to have to come under at least one person's scrutiny at one point anyways.
kaoss pads can suck my dick.
For serious. Nothing is worse than random WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH filter sweeps in the middle of a song.
Obligatory Strobe:
The idea of programming actual functional software in Bash seems really alien and awesome to me. However, that being said, gstreamer NSF playback is just awwwful.

double edit: To set a range on a random number so that you don't have to code a really dumb way of selecting a song, you can use a modulus. A modulus divides a number by whatever you tell it to, but instead of outputting the result it outputs the remainder.
(random_number) % (how_many_songs_you_have)
I think the real question is:
WHERE THE BITCHES AT?
I love the concept behind this.
I am from Portland, Oregon. I make chipmusic.
I am hungry.
OH I GET IT, IT'S A SOCIAL COMMENTARY ON MODERN LIVING
Also, stay off the internet.
