LSDJ is a musical tool. You need to understand music to get anything listenable out of it. If you don't have much musical background you'll have to face the same learning curve as learning an instrument on top of LSDJ's workflow.
Theory wont hurt but time and effort are the key factors.

I like too layer a wave bass and a pulse channel to get more complex sounds. My organisation is generally terrible though.

LSDJ has a smoother transition to Ableton Live than to any tracker.
LSDJ Clicked for me when I realised that Live mode is the clip view and song mode is the arrange view.

I learnt LSDJ first which means 90% of other trackers are like foreign language to me.
I'd say beepola, not because it's hard, but because if you don't know how to use it you'll quickly deafen people.
