I like to make weird sounds and I can't really think of any that stand out as being the weirdest because they stop sounding weird to me after awhile, but the triangle leads in these combined with the actual composition still strike me as being very weird after listening so many times and it still tickles.

Yeah, I'm sure I'd made some weirder sounds before but I have a bad memory and I'm not scouring my whole library just for this thread, lol.

Actually, come to think of it, I suppose the weirdest non-cihp sound I ever made was what I like to call electricfanstep. I guess that would be considered noise, though but eh.

Well said, sandneil. smile

@ ShinigamiMachine: I mean like... they don't even have to be the same genre or anything. There are so many creative (and uncreative) ways to keep things coherent and related.

What the fuck are you talking about? You're not good at making valid, coherent points.

Hey I took this as just a humorous "what if..." comic relief question. It is not very relevant to what I think most people are thinking of this topic being about because, for example, the LSDJ equivalent would be "imagine an LSDJ releasing a VF5 only record, then a wav channel frame cycle speed 4 VFF only record, then a 402+Fine-tune=02-pulse-in-unison-with-the-other-pulse-channel only record, then a wav channel saw wave width modulation record" or something. But it was a funny question, and it was a thought provoking question according to some people in IRC. Not to be taken super super seriously as a super serious question I think.

It'd be kinda cool if somebody did do that as a concept and called it "jazz fission" or something tongue

"Is music theory and / or music composition necessary for learning LSDJ?"

LSDJ is a program for composing music. "music theory" is not necessary to "learn" certain aspects of "LSDJ", such as how to make a drum, how to navigate menus, what the commands do, no. And, depending on what type of music you are aiming to create and your innate and assimilated musical intuition, you don't necessarily need music theory to compose music in LSDJ.(and it also depends on the individual. Some people DO desperately need music theory to create the music they want to create in a timely fashion).

But... yeah, you can't compose music on LSDJ without music composition. tongue

It really comes down to the individual. Whether or not you know it, in a way you'll be putting music theory into practice even if you aren't doing it deliberately. If you feel dissatisfied with your music composing skills and feel that studying music theory will help you, then go ahead.

Honestly I don't care. They can throw as much variety at me as they want. I like to be surprised by music. It's nice for things to be related, but they don't have to be "same" to be related.

I'd think one would be able to better tell a story with a variety of things.

Learn the names of the notes in the chords you know on guitar (for example, C major is made up of C, E, and G) and then transfer that to your sequencer of choice. Usually you'll have to put each note in an individual channel as most chipmusic trackers only allow one simultaneous note per channel.

With limited channel tracker formats like LSDJ, 2A03 NES, C64 SID, Amiga Mod, Speccy AY, and AHX, rapid arpeggios are used. They are even used for style in less limited formats like XM, Renoise, IT, etc etc.

The way rapid arpeggios typically work is that you enter a note in the note column, then use the arp command in the effects column (0xy/Vxy/etc. depends on the format). with x and y being half-step intervals up from the note that you entered in the note column. Then when the note is played it will rapidly cycle through the notes in the arp command you entered.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa... this sounds like a recipe for boring yikes
wink Oh wait I thought you said "usually the melody will stay the same throughout a song" but you said "melodies" which means there is more than one in the song *phew* yes good. :3

Actually though that is a good place to start. Take a rhythmic melody and a chord, then when you change the chord, keep the same rhythm of the melody, but change the notes to match the new chord.

not near one at the moment, do you know of any good websites?

since you play guitar already, http://justinguitar.com is a REALLY good resource for learning everything you need to know on guitar, and he puts an emphasis on ear training and music theory too and it's free!

LSDJ, MilkyTracker, HivelyTracker, LMMS, Audacity, Sound Club, Beepola, Acid Xpress, sndrec32.exe I'm such a poor man sad

I highly recommend golgi apparatus. His music is cool and melodic, sometimes silly, but always fun and heavilly influenced by the types of artists you listed.

Yeah, I kind of agree with this. To me this site doesn't seem dead at all and it appears to fit the purpose of being informational and helpful pretty well. Plus we still do have fun here. Within the context of chipmusic of course ;P

The only thing I see that needs fixing is an AHX/HVL player plugin for the music section ;p

This is good to know. I'll have to let my veteran uncle know about this.

If you dislike this thread so much feel free to click the "REPORT" link under the OP and/or rally other users in the collective cm.o community to back your cause and decide collectively that this thread is irrelevant to us as a community.

I think it is pretty lame and petty to complain about someone else's thread being off-topic and seemingly passive-aggressively trying to get it closed just because you're upset that yours did get closed while at the same time trying to defend off-topic threads as a whole :\

Just be cool, man. You don't have to take every fight that comes your way... this is making me sad sad Go with the flow. You're not going to win anybody over from a state of "uptightness" by being uptight about their being uptight about your lack of uptightivity.

And even if this thread does get closed, it is not deleted, and will continue to exist and serve its purpose of informing us of this serious problem in the graveyard or whatever I guess.... >_>

I do not want to be that guy and I never thought I would resort to this but: ucollective.org seems like just what you are looking for sad

'General Discussion' on any forum I've ever been apart of has never meant 'Off-Topic' There are always sections literally named that if those types of post are allowed/welcomed. The rules for expected and allowed content of a General Discussion board have never been as abiguous as some people make them out to be. Furthermore, the proper course of action for not knowing the rules, if there ever was a question as to what is allowed, is to lurk till you know. Not 'cry till it's fixed'

</2¢>

I have no interest in following this discussion. I think it's gotten pretty out of hand honestly. I'm going back to making music. Hopefully some of you will join me.

^This so much.

Poster suggestion:

1. Does it belong on cm.o?
2. Do I think people will like it?
3. Can I handle if no one responds to the post at all, or doesn't respond the way Id want them to?

If no to any then DONT POST.

And this.

This is why some people get annoyed at the "why is this thread still open" and other such comments.

Flytalker, seriously though? You need to grow thicker skin. No need getting offended over little stuff like that. I can tell that you are a sensitive soul, but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. Like... to me it just doesn't seem right to blow into a new community and then start trying to tell everyone else who's already been there how things should be and making dramatic statements like "delete general discussion because it isn't real".

You say "look at every other forum" but many other forums with an actual point have "General Discussion, Specific Discussions, Off-Topic". That's just how it is. You say "I want to hit a small community not have to deal with a 1000000000 users community where nobody will pay attention to me" but think about how that small community feels having some random guy flying in and posting silly stuff where it is not welcome. At the very least you should try to make friends and fit in with the community so that your rare instances of silliness are met with "ahahahaha yeah I know that guy he's cool" or something.

Only read the first couple posts, but as far as this issue is concerned I think it's good enough that these threads are made every so often, live for a little while, then get locked with no disciplinary action targeted at the thread creators.

Even if you do legit want to kick the guy's head in, you don't have the fucking balls to. You just want to sit there and scare monger from behind a computer screen.

As I've said, I don't like the guy or what's he's done, I'm sure as hell not defending him, but jesus christ, some people.
